The chomp had the spirit of a true hero, and so it was that he decided to go after the thieves out of purely altruistic reasons. Surely he had nothing to gain personally from this pursuit - the "magician" he was seeking had no need to physically lift desserts from open stalls, they or it would simply will the desserts to escape on their own.
He leapt on to the stall, toppling rice cakes of various hues and sizes - the little red and white daifuku mochi, the namesake of the city, soft and round and stuffed with sweetened bean paste, diamond shaped mochi layered in pink and white and green, giant purple mochi shaped like cabbages and massive yellow mochi vaguely resembling sunflowers.
The thieves were easy to follow since they left a trail of rice cakes in their wake. The chomp leapt from the table on to the belly of the portly merchant chomp who worked the stall, which was bouncy like a trampoline, so it sent him flying on to the rooftop.

He saw the two blackclad chomps run across the rooftop and bounce from the edge to another rooftop further down the street.
"I wonder how they did that", the chomp thought out loud.
"They're Bubblegum Ninja chomps mister", a small voice squeaked from under the chomp's nose.
He looked down. A tiny pink mochi wiggled about in front of him.
"Name's Mo", squeaked the mochi.
"A talking rice cake!"
"Yeah yeah, and you're a talking chomp right? The world's a fascinating place, thank Dog."
"Can you tell me more about these Bubblegum Ninja chomps, Mo?"
Mo was silent for a while.
"I'll cut you a deal mister. You pick me up and take me with you, and I'll tell you how to catch them."
"It's a deal."
