Chapter 6 – calming a dragon

Chapter 6 – calming a dragon

As I mentioned in the last chapter I am experimenting with having multiple first person points of view.  Though whether I keep this format, I know not. I also want to thank all the people who point out my spelling and grammar mistakes, it helps improve the story.  you know who you are.

Also If anyone knows a smoother way of changing perspectives I would love to hear about it.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I walked out of Fafnir’s lair carrying the unconscious Bastros. Several guards, seeing me carrying a body, rushed over.

“Sir,” the guard said, “what happened? Lights throughout the castle went out a few minutes ago.”

“This idiot here tried to provoke Fafnir, and it did not end well.” Atheros said. “Bring him to the infirmary and post guards on him; I have to deal with other matters. Also make sure no one other than, me or Thantos goes into the lair.”

“Yes sir,” they replied taking Bastos.

Thinking on how easily Fafnir tore through the tamer's armor made my spine tingle. “Well note to self don’t piss off Fafnir.” I thought to myself while walking down the hallway. Taking another left I head towards where the king and Thantos have been working on a project the past several days. Walking past several knights, who stand at attention as passed. Opening the door I walked into the old summoning room.

“My king,” I said as I kneed. “There has been an incident with Fafnir. The dragon tamer arrived ahead of schedule and did not go to the captain as he was supposed to; as a result he is now being taken to the infirmary.”

The king, looking at me with worry in his face said, thank you, Atheros. “I want you to take a seat, and then explain how the tamer ended up in the infirmary?”

Taking a seat as directed I started to explain, “Bastros, the dragon tamer, hit Fafnir twice with a pain whip.” continuing I said, “After the second hit Fafnir extinguished the light crystals in half the castle with a breath, and taking the tamer by his armor, Fafnir pick him up, shook him about and tossed him out of his own armor onto the floor.”

The look of horror was plain on the faces of both the king and Thantos.

“My king, I don’t think Fafnir is the same as the dragons we know.” I said, “Nowhere in the entire royal library does it mention a  dragon with six limbs. The books I found only mentioned the multiple varieties of  dragons with four limbs that we are familiar with.”

“If we are not dealing with a dragon as we know it, then what is Fafnir?” Thantos asked as he joined both the king and me.

“I don’t know,” I responded, “though I think we must do something to guarantee his help. In the past week that I have been spending time with him, I have come to realize, that we might be underestimating his intelligence.”

“We are not going to mention, the Chest match with Fafnir right,” the king said with a small smile creeping on his face.

“How did you hear about that?” I said flustered.

“Kings know everything about their subjects.” The king said, “Though I agree, we cannot wait on dealing with the dragon in the castle.”

“My king, there is a more pressing matter that must be dealt with.” I said, in a respectful tone “I promised to explain about the ‘Dragon tamer’ to Fafnir, and I need to know how much I should disclose and the direction we should head.”

“I see,” the king replied slowly. After a few minutes the king spoke, “I think the best we can do is to play it safe. Explain our acts to the point where he is happy, though Atheros I want you to find something he likes that we control for leverage. Applied correctly this might turn in our favor. Also after you calm the dragon, we must discuss what we have found in regards to the summoning.”

“Yes, my king,” I replied. Turning to Thantos I say, “You know Thantos, Fafnir has been asking why you don’t visit.”

If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. Please report the violation.

“Just tell him I am busy,” Thantos replied, “Every time I am in the same room with him, I feel like he wants to eat me.”

Chuckling at a bit, I walk out of the chamber and head back to the lair of Fafnir.

-----------------------------------------------------POV change-Atheros-----------------------

After the confrontation with the supposed dragon tamer, I laid on my hoard barely containing my anger.

“Why would they think that they could ‘tame’ a dragon in such a barbaric manner is beyond me.” I thought to myself. I laugh a bit at those thoughts. I have noticed in the past two weeks that I am thinking more and more like a dragon. As I get used to my new form, more questions arise. Though I should be getting some answers as soon as Atheros returns. As the minutes pass I could feel myself getting sleepy again before I realized it I fell asleep.

I awoke to the sound of the door opening as Atheros walked into my lair. He walked over to the desk grabbed a fresh candle from the table. Replacing the old candle that had burned down, he pulled a chair over to my hoard and sat down. Letting out a sigh he began to speak.

“I owe you an explanation, though there are things that I need to explain first that you may be able to help us with.”

Not saying anything, I stare at him with one of my large eyes. After about a minute Atheros began to speak once more saying, “the first thing I should mention is that we have not seen a dragon like you before, at first when we saw that you had six limbs we thought that you were a rare species of the normal four limbed variety.” Taking a few breaths before he continued he said, “but you are nothing close than the other dragons that we know. The first difference is your intelligence. The dragons that I have always know were small minded creatures, though I suspect that you are more intelligent than most humans. The second difference is your temperament. Most dragons would kill and eat anything it sees as weaker than itself; at best they are a little more than dangerous wild beasts.”

Thinking on his words I realize a few things. First is that they are confusing true dragons with the lesser wyverns. Thinking back on my old life I realize if they were dealing with wyverns  their training methods would makes sense.

The second issue that is bothering me more is the location of all the true dragons. In every myth book or gain if you have wyverns you will have true dragons.

“Knowing this,” Atheros said, “when we saw a dragon egg in the center of the summoning circle everyone was concerned.  We thought we knew the intelligence of dragons, so we Instantly sent out for the best Dragon tamer in our kingdom and right before you hatched we found one who met the Criteria.” Taking another breath, he said, “Though in the past week I’ve come to enjoy your company. Therefore I will talk to the king if you can help us deal with the Demon Lord’s threat. we would forever be grateful.”

I stared at Atheros as he finished talking considering what he had said, though they had their reason for the tamer, it does not excuse their ignorance. My draconic blood still boiled, because of the so called dragon tamer, reason is tempering my actions.

“I understand why you did what you did, though my draconic blood cannot be placated so easily.” I stated, “I want to arrange a meeting consisting of you, the king, Thantos and that pathetic piece of meat, known as a dragon tamer, tomorrow. There are things that need to be discussed and the answers to these questions will determine what will be done about this incident.”

Atheros with a somewhat relieved expression said, “I will try, also I am glad you are not so filled with anger as other dragons.” Then Atheros, standing up, walked out of my lair.
