well without further ado, chapter 16 -
----------------------------------------Fafnir--- POV----
“Hay Fafnir, is the kid still with you?” I heard Therin say, waking me from my slumber. I drew my wing back as I settled down again.
“What in the dark god’s name did you do to the kid?” I heard Therin yell.
“What do you mean,” I replied as I snapped my eyes opened.
I turned my head and Huddled against my ribs was a not the boy I remembered. His brown hair had been had changed to the same milky blue as my scales. Stykur sat up and stretching a bit before he opened his eyes. His eyes weren’t brown, as they had been; instead they were milky blue with darker blue streaks along the whites of his eyes.
“Well dang.” I said looking at the boy, “Therin, go get Atheros and his father”
“Right,” he said and sprinted off towards the house.
“Why does he need to get my dad?” The boy asked
“Your hair has changed color.” I replied
“Really?” the boy asked. I could see wonder on face as he started to pull his hair.
I moved my head right to him and took in a deep breath. He smelled of mana but it did not have the sweet smell that when with it. “Could I have given him mana?” I thought to myself, “If so what should I do with him…”
After a few minutes Therin returned with not only Hadrith but Atheros as well. I could hear a gasp from them as they spied the boy.
“What did you do to him,” Hadrith said running to the boy. “What did you do to my son?”
“I don’t know?” I replied. After a few seconds I looked at his father, “has your family had any magi before?”
“We have never had a mage in our family.” Hadrith replied while kneeling next to the boy, “why do you ask?”
“He smells heavily of mana, though it smells different.” I replied.
“What do you mean?” Therin asked.
"Well he smells of mana but it does not smell sweet like most mages.” I replied.
I looked at Hadrith and I could see he was concerned.
“Atheros, what does the kingdom do young magi?” I asked.
“Well if they catch the eye of mage who has reached the master rank, they can be tutored in the capital by the mage’s guild.” He replied.
“Around what age does that occurs?” I asked
“Around the age of twelve, though sooner if they show talent.” He replied understanding where this conversation was going.
I moved my face to the boy and looked him in the eye, “would you like to learn magic?”
“Yes, I think it would be fun” he replied his voice brisling with excitement.
I looked at Hadrith, “I will have Atheros write you a letter of introduction to the king, explaining the boy’s situation and I will adorn it with my seal.” I said. “if you wish you can send your son for magic lessons and he will be trained as a mage. I imagine he will do wonders with magic but I think he should enjoy being a child a bit longer with his father, one never knows when he could be gone.”
A case of content theft: this narrative is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.
“My son… a mage,” I could hear Hadrith whisper to himself.
“Thank you Fafnir, for this gift.” He said kneeling before me.
“I would not thank me yet,” I replied, “though he will control great forces and might live a better life, there is always envy in man’s heart.”
Hadrith took Stykur back to the house leaving just me, Atheros, and Therin.
“Atheros, send a brief report about this with your normal state report. I also want you to get pen and paper out so you can write a letter for me.”
“Sure give me a few minutes to grab it and we write it for you.” he replied before he headed towards the house.
“Therin how far until we hit elven lands?” I asked.
“About two days now that we have horses,” he replied, “though it could take longer if we hit patrols.”
“Human or Elven?” I asked.
“Elvin,” he replied, “though it depends on what lands the elf hails from.”
“I am guessing that there will be no troubles from your side, no skeletons in your closets as it were.” I said to the elf growling a bit.
“There should be no problems, unless it is someone I know; then we will be adding a day while I explain where I have been.” He replied taking a step back, “though I don’t know why anyone would keep skeletons in their closet.”
“Good,” I replied rolling my eyes, “I have things I need to attend to and they are becoming urgent.”
After a few minutes Atheros returned with paper and a quill. “I have the supplies” he said grabbing a piece of wood to write on, “what do you want me to write?”
“Write what I say,” I responded, “to whom it may concern, I have taken this young mage under my wing, as such I wish to have him trained in magic. In terms of compensation you may receive your pay from the king. If I find that Stykur has been hurt in any deliberate way, you have the wrath of a dragon to deal with and there Is no place on this world where you can hide from me. thank you, the hero, Fafnir.”
“Is that all,” Atheros asked his voice quivering a bit.
“I think I got the point across.” I replied.
Atheros folded the paper and took a lit candle dropping a few pieces of wax on the edge. He took out a ring and pressed it into the hot wax. Then taking the ring off my claw, he did the same. I moved my head right to the letter and breathed a bit of magic. The letter started to glow as it turned a milky blue color.
“We will leave in an hour,” I said to Atheros, “tell Therin to pack up the horses.”
“Will do,” He replied as he walked back to the house.
