well folks, first i have decided instead of have a first person view and then switch to third person, i will go fully first person. the MC will still be fafnir but i might have parts of chapters following other people, like the young scout Atheros or the old mage thanatos. i am doing this to balance out the problems a soley first person novel has, namely the lack of detail and back story. starting with chapter 6 there will be parts that follow some of the secondary characters.
also i was impressed with the comment discussion on the last chapter, and i wish to thank all those who gave constructive critiques, both in the comments and through PM. i will take them into consideration on future chapters.
also if someone wanted to make a cover for this series PM me and i could give a more detailed description of what he looks like/ what he will look like in a few years.
Without further ado, the chapter 5

“Ah, delicious cooked meat” I thought while eating in my new lair. I enjoyed the smell of cooked meat. The only problem is that the meat tastes different than what I remember. Instead of the delicious steaks or stews that I remember most of the meats are smoked and taste a little bland. In the past few days I have grown to the standing height of five feet and almost 13 feet long. i enjoy looking at my overlapping blue-white scales. Every once and awhile small blue wisps that seep from my scales, though it looks cool I find it a bit strange. Taking a break from eating I look at Atheros sitting in the corner reading over reports. He has been sitting there for the past hour and the look of worry still has not passed from his face.
“Atheros,” I called out, “you keep reading the same report over and over is there something epically interesting about that one?”
Jumping a bit from me calling out he looks over, “it is just a report on the state of the border between the outer most villages and the emerald forest.” He replied, “It seems that they are having some trouble with increased monster attacks.”
“There is something that has been bothering me the last few days.” I said to Atheros, after watching him for a little while “it seems there is something that all of you are hiding from me, also, why have I not seen Thantos in the past few days?”
“I don’t you what you mean by hiding something.” He said rather quickly, though I get the feeling that he is lying to me; my new nose can smell the sweat coming off him. “In regards to your second question,: he states quickly, "Thantos has been busy with orders from the king.”
“Ah” I said skeptically returning to eating the bland meat. After about an hour watching Atheros read reports I started to get bored. Though I have enjoyed sleeping the past few days I am rather restless.
“Atheros,” I called scaring him yet again. “I think I will go flying outside the city for a while.”
“No!” Atheros said fancily, “you can’t do that.”
Looking at him with one of draconic eyes, I reply, “Why can I not do that?”
Pausing for a moment Atheros replies, “how would it look to the towns’ people with a dragon suddenly leaving the castle.”
Thinking for a bit, I realized that Atheros did have a point. It would scare people if a dragon flew out of nowhere. “Well, how about I go out this evening.” I said to Atheros, “that way I will not scare the villagers and I will be able to stretch my wings.”
Atheros thinking for a bit said, “Though a good idea you would stick out even more at night. Not many creatures glow in the dark and the ones that do are never friendly.”
Though I do not like his answer I could see the reason behind it. “Well is there something I can do?” I ask, “I am getting rather bored.”
“Well,” Atheros said putting down the reports. “I need a break anyways. I will be right back I know a game that we could play, though I need to grab the board.” He gets up and walks out of the door after a few minutes he returns with a square board made out of wood. On the face of the board are black squares. He then brings over the table to right in front of my hoard, still composed of copper coins.
“This is a game a previous hero taught us.” He pulls out two bags and I recognize the game. “The game is called chest.”
I chuckle a bit, getting a strange look from Atheros, who is setting up the board “I think he means chess.” I thought to myself. “Though, I don’t think I will say anything.”

“Ok here are the rules.” Atheros said, and began to explain.
In college I played frequently, thinking back. One point I entered into a large tournament, Getting as far as the finals before losing. “This will be fun” I thought to myself.
After a few hours I was laughing, as Atheros was looking at the board. “How is it that I lost for the third time in a row?” He said looking defeated. “I am one of the best chest players in the capital.” How did you get so good, you only hatched about two weeks ago?”
“Dragon’s intuition” I replied chuckling to myself.

A few more days passed. I started to learn the language from Atheros. My progress sped along quickly. When there was a commotion outside my lair. Lying down on my hoard, like I normally do while Atheros is away, a man dressed in strange armor walked into the old grain warehouse that is my new lair. This man covered with metal armor wore a leather helmet I could see red hair sticking out of the back. Walking closer I could see a coiled whip on his waist. He pulled out a whip and yelled, “get up you scaly beast.”
Ignoring the rude man, who barged into my layer, I pay his command no heed. The man clearly not used to being ignored pulls back his whip and says,” Up or yull get hurt.” Getting annoyed at this rude man, I just sit there and wait looking at him with contempt.
“Ok, you beast, up I say.” He yelled while lashing out with his whip. The whip stung when it hit my scales though not as much as I expected. Getting angry at the little man I stand up.
“Good boy,” he said. “Now come here.” He commanded
Looking at him with my draconic eye hatred started build at this arrogant human that had intruded into my lair. Walking toward him I started to think at the ways to make this human suffer.
Realizing where my thoughts were going I stop for a second and take a breath. The lights in my lair dim a bit. “What do you want,” I said to the man.
“Ah, look the scaly beast is trying to imitate us humans but you won’t fool me I know you are just a dumb beast.” Said the man, “you will be listening to my commands from this day forward or you will regret it”
“Why should I do that,” I replied holding my anger in check.
“Because the king hired me to tame you.” he replied. It was at this point that Atheros ran into the room.
“Bastros, don’t provoke the dragon.” He yelled, “There have been some changes since we hired you.”
Looking at the scene Atheros’ face went white. “Fafnir, please don’t kill him I can explain everything.”
“Ha, like this whelp would be able to hurt me,” Bastros started laughing, “I have killed many dragons bigger than this tiny thing, though the two extra legs are something new.”
Growing more annoyed at the small man in front of me I started to move closer, noticing me come closer he says while holding the whip, “back dumb beast, I don’t want to hurt you more.”
Ignoring the threat I decide to knock him down a notch and take in a deep breath. All the crystal lights in the room go out, feeling energized I quickly move in front of him. I could see the surprise on the face of the man. At this point I pick him up by his armor, my teeth easily going through the metal. Shaking him a bit, the armor pieces starts to fall off. Snapping my head he flies out of the chest plate and lands a bit away on the ground passed out.
Atheros, using the light given off by the wisp coming out of my scales pulls out a small candle. Lighting it he goes over to the man, after checking for a bit I could hear a sigh escape from Atheros. Turning towards me Atheros says, “I am sorry, Fafnir, we hired him before we figured out you were sapient. I am guessing he came here before checking in with the guard captain.”
“I will deal with him then I will be back to explain a few things.” Atheros said while picking up the body of the man. With this he walked out. Feeling sleepy I go to my hoard and laid down to wait for Atheros to explain the rude man. “The reason better be good" I thought to myself "or I will make a lair elsewhere.”
