Price of Research

The remaining S operatives moved away, returning to the main group.

They walked into the light, unaffected or unhindered by it.

“Orders…Sir…” Hannah stepped back with the others, Enzo was surprised for a brief moment at the sight of the things, but quickly took to the helm.

“E division begin taking the bodies, as for the rest of us. We may have to resort to combat.” He ordered in an emotionless tone, looking at the things with his sword held tightly, dripping with blood of the earlier hordes.

The teams tried thinking of a plan while the mutants walked slowly towards them.

Enzo walked in front of them, prepared with a possible plan.

“Focus on the heads, evade their attacks.” Without another word, everyone realized what they were about to do next, attack.

With Enzo, the S and A operatives charged straight on, dodging the wide attacks of the mutants as they tried grabbing at them or cutting them down. Some fell, hit by the thing’s quick attacks while the rest managed to get close enough.

Through the dark, another wave of mutants ran through, similar to the ones before. But at this moment, Callan only felt frustration and desperation, his eyes beamed at the head mutants.

Behind him, the remaining operatives prepared to fight, Alexia and her teammates began injecting themselves with the stimulants alongside the other teams.

Callan leapt on one of the mutants, embedding his sword into the its head, letting out a guttural cry as it stumbled back.

Fueled by the stim and adrenaline, Callan’s focus shifted to only the head of the mutant, driving his sword in back and forth in an effort to kill the thing. But in his blind attack, he was suddenly grabbed by its arm.

He felt his body fly through the air as he was thrown away, landing hard on the muddy ground.

In a daze, he could see his teammates and allies fight desperately, realizing the new threat below them as they attempted to take down the behemoths.

More and more continued pouring out of the darkness, flooding the frontline. As the large mutants began falling, the operatives realized their new threat.

Getting back up, Callan was face to face with a group of smaller mutants in front of him.

‘I hope we can survive this…’ Callan ran forward, swinging his blade like a madman, cutting away at the bodies of the abominations as they tried to stab and claw at him.

Through the crowd, Callan lunged at the mutant once more.

Its head already weakened, Callan delivered a final strike, digging his blade deeper into the thing’s head until it stopped growling and fell on its back.

Looking to the rear, the other teams seemed to be getting overwhelmed by the mutants that ran through, fighting for their lives as the L operatives continued shining their light, trying to stay alive while hacking at any mutant that came close.

It was clear that they were beginning to lose ground, sustaining more and more injuries while a few were already dead.

He was unsure whether to aid his comrades at the front…Or the ones behind him.

‘I need to save who I can, I can't let many die like before…’ After much deliberation in his mind, Callan hacked his way through, reaching the H and other teams.

‘Hope they can handle it.’ Callan glanced at his teammates, the remaining behemoths had fallen, leaving only the smaller ones to take care of.

Soon, Callan joined with Alexia. Together they held their ground, taking down as many as they could while still fueled on the stims.

Alexia swung her mace violently, turning the head of the mutants into pulps and leaving clouds of red.

Her teammates and the I operatives fought together, while the E operatives slowly smashed through the horde to reach the dead mutants and to perhaps provide aid to their allies at the front.

“Y’know, maybe you should head back to the front, i don’t think the leader will like you aiding us. You got your orders after all.” Alexia remarked, somehow more concerned about his fate with Enzo than the fight.

“Doesn’t matter, we need to survive this place and try getting out.” Callan became more ferocious with his attacks, at this point his sword seemed to be a pure red color.

In front, the last of the behemoths struggled to take down the operatives as they began swarming it, cutting and stabbing at different sections of its body. As the attack went on, they began to weaken, falling to the ground after taking so many hits.

A case of literary theft: this tale is not rightfully on Amazon; if you see it, report the violation.

Once the area around the team became calmer, Alexia jabbed a second needle to Callan’s back.

“I think we can handle it now, deal with your team.” Callan ran back to the frontline, quickly meeting his allies again and the E operatives.

Enzo was part of the slaughter, taking down dozens of mutants surrounding him.

“E operatives, begin capturing the mutants. And recover the dead operatives as well!” He yelled.

“S, Hannah, you two protect the E operatives!” He yelled out.

Heeding his order immediately, Callan jumped in front of the team, slashing at the mutants with little fatigue, quickly clearing an area and cutting them off from the team.

The E operatives began tossing nets on the dead mutants, quickly wrapping around the mutants.

Too focused on the mayhem, Callan slowly realized that the horde had become smaller, with the last ones being taken out in a few swings.

“Hope these things provide a large amount of energy.” One of the E operatives muttered through their masks.

With the area cleared for now, the E operatives began tossing the same nets over their dead allies.

Callan felt the effects of the stim begin to wear off. But before he could regain his sense of pain, he fell to the ground.

Alexia and a teammate immediately ran to his aid.

He realized that his body was covered in so many cuts and lacerations, causing him to start bleeding out profusely. At that moment, Callan felt his life start coming to an end. With the blood gushing out fast.

“Stay with me.” Alexia’s hands began glowing a bright dark green. Her teammate supported Callan, readjusting his position.

She expelled more and more of her energy, grunting in pain from the amount of energy she’s using to save Callan’s fleeting life.

After a grueling and fear filled few minutes, every single wound, deep or shallow, was getting healed.

Soon, the final wounds were healed, to the excitement and enjoyment of Alexia.

A bright smile grew on her face.

“I really did it! I saved a fellow teammate, an A division one no less!” Her exhaustion throughout seemed to dissipate as she rejoiced.

She extended a hand to Callan.

But, her face began turning pale, and her smile slowly turned to terror as she began looking down.

A large claw had impaled through her entire body from behind.

“W-Well…” She slowly looked at Callan.

“A-Atleast d-did what i always wanted t-to do…” Her body raised from the ground, and in a split second, was pulled into the darkness.

Callan couldn’t believe what he had just witnessed. He stood from the ground, taking up his weapon.

But a behemoth or mutant horde didn’t emerge from the darkness.

“What the hell-” Another claw dashed through the air and dug through one of the L operative’s bodies. And just as quick as it entered, the claw pulled the operative back into the darkness, his screams fading away.

Walking slowly into the light, a mutant, slimmer and almost similar in shape to a normal human appeared.

Both its arms were elongated, with the same claws that took away the operatives dragging behind it on the muddy dirt.

“Is that another one of those unique ones?” Without warning, the mutant raised its arm forward, and the claw flew towards the S operative that spoke, but he managed to evade it just in time.

Soon, the teams realized their new situation.

“E operatives take the bodies! All operatives fall back!” Enzo yelled.

In haste, the entire unit began running back, slowly returning to their former formation before, and leaving the mutant.

As they ran, one of the last S operatives jumped upwards as a claw flew towards her, hitting the mud instead.

“What the hell was that thing!?” Clara yelled in confusion.

Callan only felt confused and enraged. But at this point they needed to fall back.

A loud roar sounded throughout the area, to the panic of what remained of the team.

“Run faster now!” Enzo yelled out again, the E operatives ran as fast as they could with the nets being dragged from behind.

Mutants began running into the light and getting closer to the operatives, getting taken out quickly.

Dozens began appearing through the light, with everyone trying to take them down while keeping up with the team.

The mutants ran just as fast as the team, with a few getting close to Callan. He swung at the ones behind him, nearly stumbling down trying to focus on running and fighting at the same time.

But the team managed to accomplish their mission, at this moment though, Callan was unsure if they could return alive with it.
