Capture and Retreat

Capture and Retreat

The unique mutants rushed in, pushing the other ones away as they ran headfirst into the line of operatives.

With harsh aggression, they slashed and tried to grab at the operatives, they looked somewhat bigger and bulkier than the other mutants, standing out like a sore thumb.

The G and S operatives fought on with all the energy they had, attempting to take down these new mutants while dodging attacks and killing any smaller mutants that tried passing through.

Callan couldn’t help but watch them, restrained by the order of Enzo to stay in position. He could only hope that they survived while fighting on.

To his horror, one of the mutants grabbed an operative and lifted him to the air, as he helplessly thrashed at it, trying to cut off the mutant’s arm, he was thrown towards Callan and the others.

The man’s body slammed into him, knocking him to the ground. For a moment, Callan was stuck in a daze, only able to make out the yells of the operatives in their defense against droves of mutants. But he regained his footing, shaking his head for a few seconds and looking at the battle going on in front of him.

More started rushing through the gap, beginning to overwhelm the already occupied S operatives.

Callan and his team quickly found themselves fighting once more as the mutants began charging them. Slashing away at them, Callan hastily shoved another needle into his neck, filling him with more energy and ignoring the pain.

As clumps of flesh littered the dirt, one of the mutants managed to break through, ignoring the others and seemingly only focused on Callan.

It had four large arms, for a moment he felt a shiver go down his spine. But with the syringe in full effect, he began fighting the creature.

Its arms were tough, sustaining blow after blow without being dismembered. As it went on, the sword only became temporarily stuck on its arms, forcing Callan to rip it off and try again.

While it blocked Callan’s attacks with a pair of its hands, the other pair tried swinging and hitting him.

But his attacks barely stopped, only becoming more and more vicious by the second, clearly irritated by the thing’s durability. But his mind recalled Enzo’s order.

‘Make sure the unique ones are intact’

He slashed away, taking out other mutants that tried passing by the fight. Callan’s eyes glanced at any part of the mutant, finding a weak spot.

Stuck on observing the mutant, he failed to notice another break through, this time bearing two large heads.

In a moment of surprise, Callan was slammed to the ground by the mutant, he tried crawling away as the two continued stomping closer to him.

Suddenly, one of the H operatives charged in, slamming their mace into the 4 armed mutant’s leg, causing it to kneel down. Before he could deliver a second strike though, he was quickly overwhelmed by smaller mutants nearby.

Callan looked on in horror and sadness, unable to help.

Stolen from its original source, this story is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

The two headed mutant raised its arm, ready to deliver a blow. Callan squeezed his eyes, expecting the blow to come.

But after a few seconds, nothing happened. Opening them, Enzo was on top of the mutant, driving his sword down onto the mutant’s neck, quickly jumping down and slashing at its legs.

His moves were precise and quick, taking down both mutants in a matter of seconds, moving rapidly towards the mutants that overwhelmed the operative earlier. Once done, he looked at Callan. Without warning, he grabbed his forearm and pulled him up with great force.

“You didn’t abandon your post, but were quickly overwhelmed. Make sure this doesn’t repeat again.” Enzo returned to his post after speaking, leaving little time for Callan to understand what he was staying, still under the effect of the syringe.

Once his focus returned, Callan returned to cutting away at the mutants that broke through, culling their numbers as fast as he could.

His teammates fought on, slashing and hacking away at the limbs and bodies of mutants that got too close, protecting those behind them.

Unique mutants began to fall with their other comrades, but it was clear as day that the G and S operatives couldn't hold the line any longer.

As more were tossed around or killed, Enzo relayed another order.

"All units move back, form a tight wall!" Heeding his order, the remaining operatives fought their way through the horde and formed a line of operatives.

Callan and the others finished fighting, watching as the operatives cut down the mutants in front of them.

"It seems like the rain is getting weaker." An I division operative spoke up behind them, looking at her interface.

"I calculate that their numbers may drop by 60%" Callan didn't know how she managed to know that, but hoped it was true.

He warched on as body parts and blood flew in the air, the remaining operatives acted like shredders.

In their struggle, the last of the unique mutants approached the line.

"Hannah, you and your specialists must take out the unique ones. Try to take them out intact!" He yelled, trying to be audible in the carnage.

But they heard his orders. With little delay, Hannah, Marco, and the woman rushed forward and charged into the thick of it, focusing purely on the unique ones.

"Hasten your attacks!" The line of operatives heeded his order, Callan could hear the sound of yelling and weapons slashing get louder.

The three struggled at first, dodging their attacks. But in little time, they started attacking, slashing at the legs or neck, finding any posdible weakspot to bring them down fast.

In a minute, they took down the last unique mutants, but found themselves surrounded by other mutants.

"Operatives begin moving forward!" Enzo yelled another order. The line moved slowly onward, but the slaughter continued. Soon, the three were relieved and passed through the line of pperatives back to safety.

They were all drenched in blood and wounds.

Marco and Hannah were both exhausted, but the woman casually looked at her interfaces once more, seemingly inbothered by what she just went through.

"The rain is weakening further! Our potential success has raised by 40%" An I operative yelled out.

The mutants on the front began to dwindle, until the last one fell to the ground.

Everyone shouted in joy and pride, surviving another attack. But their xelebration was shortlived, as Enzo issued another order.

"Retrieve the bodies of the mutants and operatives. We need to fall back now, the rain may pick up again." With the hope of finally leaving, E operatives ran out the formation. Casting nets on the corpses of the operatives and unique mutants. H operatives began healing the wounded, bringing them back to shape before taking a swig from their canteens.

In minutes, they were finished. Walking back to the formation with filled nets, dragged from their backs.

"Alright, let's move."

The remaining operatives began to retreat, full of relief and joy.

The I operatives were more focused on staring at the mutants and remaining operatives.

"Out of the 50, it seems we have sustained 18 casualties. All injured were healed. A better record than before." One of them notified.
