Chapter 6: The guild’s formatting is terrible, too

‘You should stay in here for a while! We don’t mind another person!’ Edward grinned, hitting me on the back with the force of a hammer. A window popped up in front of my face.

[System:

You have taken 5 damage.]

Ah. Why am I so weak? Or rather, why is he so strong? Anyways, I cannot impose on them without giving them any benefits, so I decided to get a job. With my degree in Math and Computer science, I could probably get a job in the guild, or maybe a shop. I will earn enough money to pay rent to the Winstons, and eventually get enough money to live by myself.

After a full day of job searching, I couldn’t find a job due to how little was known about me, and therefore resulted in the lack of employers who would trust me without any known qualifications. My university degrees are completely useless, and i’m literally as good as an illiterate bum on the streets. Finally, after getting told that I was not what they were looking for fifty-six times, I was able to find a job at the guild. The local guild looked exactly like you’d imagine if you thought of a medieval guild.

It had a red tiled roof and plaster walls, and was three stories tall. It was not an exaggerating to say that it was the second-largest building, if not for the palace in the centre of the town, but that’s irrelevant for now. My new job required the recording of everything in the guild, and manage all of the funds and stuff. It was surprisingly complicated, if you consider all of the rankings and quest payments.

(Adventurer rankings: Wood->Beginner->Iron->Silver->Gold->Advanced->Platinium->Obsidian. What a terriblesystem)

On my first day of work, I managed to screw up the rankings. Since in my old world, platinum is cheaper than gold, I thought that gold ranks higher than platinum, so when I told him that he ranked from ‘advanced’ to ‘gold’, he almost beat the shit out of me. Luckily, my colleague helped rectify the issue before my face was caved in from his punches.

After that incident, we somehow became friends.

‘I’m surprised that you lasted so long. My name is Doris, Doris Locke,’ He held out his hand as I stifled my laughter, ‘You’re the new guy, right?’

‘I’m… I’m Chen Nian,’ I barely managed to introduce myself before bursting out in giggles.

‘Yes, yes, my name is funny. You bastard, I didn’t laugh at your name, so why are you laughing at mine?’ Doris sighed exasperatedly. ‘So you’re from the East, right?’

‘Yeah, but Doris—Pft—I thought that you’d be a locksmith, not a service—Pft—member,’ I barely choked out with all of my laughter. That’s how all of my friendships are like. I’m a programmer, not a normie.

After work, I went for a drink to celebrate my survival, especially after angering the previously ‘advanced’, now platinum ranked adventurer. I was able to drink a few bottles with today’s pay.

Afterwards, I went back to the Winston household, and passed out on my bed. At least, what I thought was my bed.
