Chapter 19: embodiment of death

Elise’s POV

After I entered the dungeon, I saw Chen Nian suddenly draw his swords and stop. What were his two swords? I had never seen any sword of that shape before. I recognised one. It was curved like French Curve, a katana. However, the other was closer to a spear than a sword.

Why was he holding the blades in a backhand grip? I had never seen such a sword technique before, not even in my old world. A goblin lunged towards Chen Nian, and tried to attack using a dagger. Without any hesitation, he stabbed the spear/sword hybrid into where the goblin’s heart would be, and flicked the dying body off of the blade. He used the katana to slice another goblin’s neck, making sure not to accidentally meet its spine, and wiped the blade on his shirt. He killed the goblins with terrifying efficiency, using his body like a tool. The attacks showed no hint of flamboyance, and is completely made for efficiency. He didn’t even care about how he looked, wiping the blade as to not blunt it. He looked like an image of death.

He stabbed, sliced, kicked, and even threw his spear/sword hybrid at the goblins, The blade would always pierce a goblin in a major artery, and suddenly reappear in his hand. He looked like Thor, throwing Mjolnir again and again, taking out groups of enemies at once.

Honestly, he had no honour, no pretense, no intention to impress. He was the exact type that we needed in the party. He started walking towards the centre of the dungeon, killing goblins that jumped at him from all directions. The goblin corpses piled up in a line from the entry point to the centre of the dungeon.

The boss at the centre of the dungeon appeared without any warning. The boss was a huge goblin holing a massive club. Chen Nian didn’t look surprised at all when he saw the goblin, despite it being three times his height. The goblin swung his club in a downwards motion, which Chen Nian just blocked with the spear/sword hybrid. Was he unafraid of it breaking? Was he that confident of his creation?

The club just slid off the blade, hitting the floor next to Chen Nian. The next thing that he did surprised me. Instead of going for the vitals, he just attacks the heel of the boss. What was he doing? He could have one-shotted the boss with a single attack to the vitals. He cut exactly where the Achilles tendon was. He sliced it shallowly so as to not blunt his sword on the bone. He cut it so precisely that it was like looking at a professional chef butchering a chicken. He then threw his sword to cut the biceps tendon. The club fell out of its hand, carving a huge hole in the floor.

The katana sliced the throat of the goblin, resulting in it falling backwards onto its back. It started struggling in its final bid for life. Chen Nian walked up to the goblin, dodging the stray attacks with minimal movement, like a gymnast doing an obstacle course.

He walked up to his face, and stepped on its neck sharply. The goblin stopped moving immediately.

‘What was that for?’ I asked him, questioning why he would finish off a mortally wounded enemy.

He yelped and got into a stance. Seeing me, he relaxed his stance and sighed, ‘Oh, it’s you. I forgot that you were there.’

I repeated my question.

‘Well, to put it out of its misery, of course.’

That was much more humane than just leaving it to die like that. Thinking back, I started clarifying the doubts that I had during the fight.

Skipping the questions that were too personal, I asked him why he wouldn’t attack the boss’ vital points immediately. I had already killed this boss about five times, with every repetition after the first being a one shot run (TN: meaning that the boss was one shotted) when I just aimed at the vital points.

‘What weapon are you using?’ He just answered with another question. My weapon hadn’t changed from the moment that I entered this world. It was a longsword of length of one metre, that negated any negative effects placed on it. It had an attack of over 1000, making it by far the best weapon possibility that I could use. Meanwhile, other weapons shouldn’t be able to negate effects, and their attacks are probably lower than mine.

Still, to kill monsters with such efficiency, it was like… he was the embodiment of death.
