Harper received a call from the Gold Digger.
"Hello, dragon's hair! I've received a call from my friend in the consulate, and he successfully managed to get your friend into his hands. He will conduct the interview, so don't expect it to be hard for your friend. Even though everything is almost done, he still needs to be careful. The interviews are being recorded, and if he messes up, not only will you lose money, but he will have to wait at least a year to apply again. Be careful."
"Thank you, Gold Digger. Where do we have to be?"
"My friend is from San Diego. Be there in 3 hours. Your friend's number is G-2881."
"Alright, we'll be there."
As Harper said that he would be there, the call ended. Comoron finally had his Russian citizenship, so at least he still had a way to go. If he couldn't earn his green card, they would probably hire him as a worker for their nightclub, and in 5 years he could become a citizen.
Comoron was sleeping at Harper's house. It was big enough to suit two people, and Harper lived there alone.
"Comoron, wake up. In three hours, your interview will start. Do you remember the plan? You are a Russian who flew to Mexico and, from there, is trying to enter America. Your ears are a plastic surgery you did when you were a teen, and your English is that good because you learned it online."
Harper said. He knew that the translation spell wouldn't work on the cameras, so he used his coat of arms to transfer his English skills to Comoron. His English is now at least 18 years old at the university first-year level.
"Alright. I think that I can do it alone. We've trained for the last week, so everything is going to be smoother."
Comoron said that. He was irradiating confidence, and that was a good sign.
"Nice. I was in Tijuana before. From there, we can enter San Diego and pass through the customs."
As Harper said it, he opened the portal. Both Comoron and Harper crossed it. They were in a dirty alley in Tijuana, but less than a mile away from the border.
They walked for an hour and crossed the border. The process was quite fast. Harper, as an American citizen, just had to show his ID; as for Comoron, he showed the Russian ID that the Gold Digger had printed for him. He was finally able to cross the border. For the first time, he was legally in America.
Both of them walked in the direction of the consulate. As they entered the place, Harper sat in a chair inside the reception. Comoron sat on Harper's side. They waited for 30 minutes when they finally called Comoron. He entered there, and the interview started.
"Why do you want to be a citizen of the United States?"
"Because I love this country, and I want to be part of it."
Comoron answered naturally. He didn't have to answer anything more than the questions. He shouldn't.
"What's your plan in America?"
"I'll start living with a friend of mine and then work in a nightclub that this same friend is running."
"You have been working as what since now?"
"Sir, I worked in lots of jobs. I was initially a cashier, then a load lifter, then a manager of a small store, and I am now going to work as the manager of that nightclub in Los Angeles."
The interviewer asked some other things, which Comoron answered with ease, and then he was finally able to leave.
"We will be in contact soon regarding your interview. Don't turn off your phone."
"Thank you, sir."
Comoron thanked the interviewer and then left. He and Harper then went to a store, where they ate their lunch. It was a meat taco with some guacamole; as for the drink, it was your standard coke.
They left that store and went to an alley far from anywhere, where they opened a portal, and they were back at Harper's house.
They only had to wait, and they waited.
...
..
7 days later...
Alex was sleeping with his wife. He woke up early, as always. He had finally left his old job, and now he and his friends are going to run that nightclub. Of course, they will just get a manager to do all the work as they bring in more and more money. They had to find someone they could trust, as they were going to introduce some dirty money for laundry there.
Harper had said that the interview with Comoron went smoother, so everything was going as planned, and they would soon enter that cyberpunk place. The slums surely would pose a threat, but they could also be something good. The slums were a dirty place, full of trash, electronic scrap, and famine-prone people. Everyone trying to escape from that dictatorship probably went there. As for why they hadn't assaulted that place yet, it still remains a mystery.
He could only assume that they had turned that place into a safe zone, which is exactly what he wanted. Alex would buy the people support from there using Earth items that they surely lacked. He and his friends would buy lots of food and donate it to the community there. With the support of the people, they would start to sell organic food and good clothes for functional electronic scrap. With these scraps, they could find someone to turn them into functional items and sell them on earth. The electronic scrap there may have better technology than the Earth behind it.
Alex could start to see that they could actually hybridize this technology into their nightclub to save money on electricity bills. They could even transform that place into a psychedelic one.
Alex was starting to have ideas. He called Michael, Harper, and Comoron to tell them these ideas.
"Hello guys, sorry for calling you this early."
Alex said.
"Don't worry, we were already awake."
Harper said. He and Comoron were on the road to pick up Comoron's green card.
"Same for me."
Michael said. He had already woken up and was going on a date with his wife.
"Good to hear you all are awake. I had an insane idea. What about changing our plans about going into that world after we opened the nightclub and instead opening the nightclub with the technology from there? Imagine us being the first nightclub in the world to use holograms in the shows."
"This is actually nice. But I can't help you guys right now. I'm going to pick Comoron's green card. He's also coming with me."
Harper said.
"I promised Jenifer a date today, so I can help you guys only later. To be honest, I was going to show her the nightclub, so if you show up later, Alex, we may already be there."
Michael said.
"Alright, Michael, at 3 p.m., let's meet there."
Alex said.
"Okay"
Michael replied.
As both said their goodbyes, the call ended. Two weeks had passed since they bought that nightclub, and it was already in their names. They had the keys and could be there at any moment. But they were waiting for Comoron's green card before splitting the nightclub between themselves. Comoron was going to have his citizenship today, so they could already set it up.
As Alex was alone now, he went to his bed and woke Alicia up.
"Honey, wake up."
"Awww, just another 5 minutes."
"I love your sleepy face, hahaha."
Alex laughed. Alicia looked at him with a wry smile, and we both laughed after that. It was enough to wake Alicia up completely, so she went to wash her face and brush her teeth, and Alex invited her to a date also.
"Hey, honey, I'm free today. Do you want a date?"
"Yes dear! I heard of a cafeteria that opened in west Hollywood, and it is quite popular."
Alicia was talking about that new cafeteria with a smile on her face. She was surely excited about it; Alex could tell with just a glance.
"So, let's go there. It is close to my new nightclub, so we can even visit it. I actually combined with Michael to visit there at 3 p.m., but as our date is close to there, you can go together."
"Excellent idea, dear! I would love to visit your new business."
"Unfortunately, it is quite a mess. It was shut down for at least a year, so better be ready."
"No problem. I already saw worse things than some dusty abandoned place."
Alicia replied. She was an office manager who sometimes had outside work at some really dirty places.
As both of them talked about the date, an hour had already passed, and they finally went to that cafeteria.
Unauthorized duplication: this narrative has been taken without consent. Report sightings.
Alex parked the car, and both he and Alicia entered the cafeteria. They saw Michael and Jenifer there; what a coincidence, they thought.
"Jenifer, how are you doing, girl?"
Alicia talked to Jenifer. She looked at her, surprised, and greeted her back.
"I'm good, Alicia! Quite a surprise you're also here, hun."
"Yes, the same here, hahahaha."
As both of them greeted each other, Alex and Alicia sat down at their table. As Alex and Michael were already together, they talked about the nightclub. Alicia and Jenifer talked to each other.
"Jenifer, how is your wedding going?"
"It is going quite well, Alicia; we will marry officially in 2 months from now on! I heard that Alex and my husband and brother got their hands in some good money, so you better make Alex buy you a good dress!"
"I will, hahahaha."
Alicia laughed. She knew that this money wasn't exactly what Jenifer thought it was, so she could only laugh at it. She wanted to tell Jenifer what was going on, but she couldn't do it because Harper and Michael hadn't told her anything yet, and it should be up to them to tell her.
Alicia then asked Jenifer.
"Jenifer, do you know that your brother has a roommate?"
Jenifer was surprised at the news; her brother usually lived alone in his home. It wasn't a great place, but it wasn't small either.
"How's she? My brother's roommate?"
"Actually, she isn't she, but he. Your brother is helping a friend of his who has just made his way to America."
"So, that's it..."
Jenifer was a little disappointed; she really wanted Harper to get a girlfriend.
"But don't worry, Jenifer; it is temporary. This guy is a foreign partner who came to America to help him and our husbands in the nightclub. He even owns 25% of it."
"So, it was him, the fourth owner."
The revelation from Alicia made Jenifer understand things a little better now. She knew that Michael, Alex, and Harper had bought a nightclub, but she didn't know that they had a partner. Now, it explains why her husband's shares weren't 33%, but 25%.
As they continued to talk about life, an hour had already passed, and they were leaving and going to the nightclub to see the place with their own eyes.
They knew that the place was a mess, so they didn't care much about what they would find there. But still, to bring their wives there was quite disappointing and anti-climatic.
As they were approaching the place, they saw that the streets weren't bad but rather good. At least the location of the nightclub was pretty decent.
They finally reached the place and entered. The building was quite old and needed urgent remodeling to operate. Alex and Michael already knew what to do. The outside shape was in good shape; setting aside the necessary remodeling, it can work just fine; the problem is in the interior. As they entered the building, tons of dirt came into their faces. The place was messy and full of cobwebs; they could even see some bugs.
Alex and Michael weren't very concerned about it. They could use magic to easily wipe them out, but the girls, on the other hand, had a concerned expression, asking themselves if they would have to clean this place.
Jenifer and Alicia knew that it would be their husbands who would run it. But they couldn't help but try to help them. Alicia, who knew it was going to be some money laundry machine, still wanted this place to turn into something to be proud of that brings profit in its own right. As for Jenifer, it wasn't just her husband's place but also her brother's. She really wanted to help, but it would surely take a lot of time to be ready.
Alex and Michael, seeing their wives expressions, started to laugh.
"Hahahaha, don't worry girls, we will take care of this place alone; if we need your help, we will call. Rest assured, we probably won't call."
Alex said. Michael could only confirm with his head.
As they talked, everyone started to look around; they wanted to map the place.
The layout itself was good; they could introduce a VIP area soon. In the future, they can even buy some neighboring places and run their business in a bigger place.
As they finished their mapping, Alex and Michael started to talk about the technology they would put in the nightclub.
"Michael, this place can be the singer's spot. We put some holographic displays here to show things and some lasers there, and it will be good."
Alex said.
"Yes. We can add some fire throwers here. But to work, we have to add some oxygen regulators to the room. We can try to use some scrap from that place to create these oxidizers. And don't forget the most important thing when we talk about a nightclub: the smoke."
Michael replied. Alex also had some thoughts about the place.
"Michael, and what about trying to emulate a psychedelic sensation by using some kind of illusion? Surely, that world's technology can provide it."
"Excellent idea! We just need to create these things, and voila, everything's working!"
Michael was also happy about this. They would surely do great!
They continued to talk about their ideas. Use some monster fur to create the furniture. With heat technology from the advanced world, they would also put in advanced air conditioning to quickly modify the party atmosphere by inducing hot or cold temperatures and more or less wind. They could even elevate the oxygen concentration to make people more aware and focused on the party. Some small signal jammers, so people won't focus on their cellphones; instead, they will enjoy the party.
The DJ spot was also reserved in a hidden room with a view of the singer's place. They could make it work perfectly. The DJ would control the room atmosphere, the sound, the effects, the holograms, everything.
But they still had to get their hands on that technology. They knew that the holograms existed because they were almost everywhere in that world. As for the other parts, it was almost certain they existed.
Alex and Michael finally stopped their conversations when Alicia and Jenifer came at them.
"This place is amazing, guys. Even though it still lacks a renovation."
Jenifer said.
Michael and Alex could only agree to that; the place was surely good. But it was beaten. The alcohol was intact, but some of it expired, while the quality itself was mediocre and the bar wasn't that luxurious. The place was an 80s club where only old people went. While oldies were still a good market, their place should be for younger and attractive customers; it would bring more money.
They could only think about the future, and some excitement came to them. They are now almost ready to operate in that cyberpunk world.
As they talked about random stuff with each other, they left the place, and both Michael and Alex went to their respective homes.
...
..
2 days later...
Alex woke up that day as usual. He washed his face and brushed his teeth. He looked at Alicia one more time, realizing that he loved her sleepy face. He then called his group. Everyone accepted his call, and he asked them to meet him at his home.
Everyone accepted his request, and after 2 hours, they came.
Yesterday, Alex asked for some money to buy some food and other things for the people in the slums. They would buy their help using the power of their stomachs. Alex bought 1.5 tons of meat, a lot of seasonings, salt, and other things to season the meat; he also bought pasta, some vegetables, and lots of other things. They would create a free food distribution system in that place. The only issue was how they would bring that much food there without leaving suspicions about how they could transport such a quantity to the slums.
For that, Alex had a plan. They could easily justify almost everything if they came there with a container. Alex already bought the container; it was a cheap one, and he paid only 1000 dollars. He used his magical spatial storage to store all the items. He could manipulate things there, so he put everything organized inside the container. It felt almost like a drag game, where he would drag items into their respective storages. They were ready to go.
Comoron was excited about this. He was the only one who couldn't completely understand that world with mere words, so he had to see it by himself.
Alex finally opened the portal, and they were on that polluted river margin. It was surely something else for Comoron, who had never ever seen such pollution of nature. He was also amazed by the city on the horizon. Big and gray skyscrapers with red flags and a symbol in the middle of them. Drones were flying everywhere; even some flying cars could be seen. As for Michael, he couldn't not compare it to Nazi Germany; I mean, even the flags are similar.
They look around to check if there's someone, but they can't find anyone there. Not even cameras, just electronic scrap, plastic, and trash in the river. Alex opened his spatial storage, and the container appeared in front of them. Unlike Comoron's old storage, this one wasn't a cube where they could store their things, but almost like a whole storage world where they could directly put and take things.
They picked up the container and walked in the direction of the slums. As they weren't being chased by drones anymore, they could see the slums better. The place was beaten, but the people were also fighting. They were laughing, showing public affection—nothing like what they saw in the city. Unfortunately, they didn't see it wrong that time; the people here don't have enough food. I guess that they can't plant in a place so contaminated as this.
As they were dragging the container around, they finally found a good spot to start the food distribution.
Alex prepared a table, some pans he had bought, and a random stove that probably didn't work, but he did it to serve as a cover for the magic ignited there. He started to prepare the place to make food, and the people around them started to gaze. They saw the container full of food, and some of them understood that these guys were giving food freely. But unlike the expectations, only a few people actually wanted to pick the food.
People started to murmur.
"Hey, we don't know these guys."
"But they are going to give us food; we are starving in this hell."
"Yes, they are probably from the Unified Republics, even though how they got here is unknown."
"I don't care about it anymore; I'll ask them directly!"
A man, known for his courage, went in the container's direction to ask for food. He would either die to show his people who these guys are in fact or live and prove that they don't have any ill intentions. His two daughters were almost dying from famine; if this food was indeed good, it would save their lives.
"Hey sirs, how much for one kilogram of meat?"
As the man asked Alex and his group, they didn't understand his language. Alex then launched the spell, and they could finally communicate.
"Can you repeat, sir?"
Alex said it. The man didn't understand, but he repeated his request, and then Alex answered.
"We are actually giving this food away for free. We probably have enough for everyone, even though we recommend you guys rationalize."
"Oh, seriously? Thank you very much, sir! Can I eat for my ill daughters also?"
"Oh, your daughters are ill? How many of them do you have?"
"Two sir"
As the man said how many daughters he had, Alex gave him some meat, vegetables, salt, and candy. The man then shouted
"THESE GUYS ARE GIVING FREE FOOD!"
A crowd got around the containers. Everyone was getting their food. The people are actually pretty well mannered, unlike in earth's slum, where people usually try to be the first to get their parts; here everyone formed a queue and got their food one by one.
...
..
From afar, a girl was looking at some guys giving food to the people; they had a container behind them, probably where this food was coming from. She was above the roof of some shack in the slums. She was looking at them quite intensely, to be honest; she surely had something on her mind.
That girl is actually a hacker and some kind of engineer. She was quite young and full of talent. At the age of 24, she could already protect the slums by using some hidden cameras in the trash. She's the reason why the government stopped oppressing people there. Even though she is talented, she can't protect that place forever, so she is actually trying to flee with her people to the United States, one of the last free countries in the world.
She just hasn't escaped yet because of her mother. Her dad died frightening the oppressors to save her and her mother when she was 5, so she can't just let her mother suffer here. The Unified Republics had already sent people to contact her, but the answer was always the same: she wouldn't go without her mother. Unfortunately, her mother was ill, so she couldn't escape.
It was a rare illness that kills the person slowly, and even though there is treatment, there's no cure, and the damage done cannot be undone. Fortunately, her mother's brain was 100%, but she couldn't walk anymore or move her left arm. Soon she would die, so the girl wanted to cure her before that happened, and that is precisely why she's looking at these guys.
She had cameras hidden in all the places, and last month something peculiar happened. Three drones were chasing two guys who were running like professional athletes. She was used to it but still wondered where the hell these people came from. Well, she would discover it soon. As the girl was preparing to kill the drones using an EMP, what she saw was something beyond her wildest dreams. One of the guys suddenly launched a laser beam from his finger, killed the drones, and took them with him. Don't you know that these guys have GPS attached? The most amazing had yet to come. As the guys killed the drones, the one who shot down these machines opened something that could only be described as a fantasy portal, and as soon as they crossed that, it disappeared, leaving no trace of what happened.
She could only wonder; these folks are surely free. They can open portals to wherever they want, mess around, and don't pay for their actions, something she could only dream of.
And as the next month came, she would start to forget about them, like, There's no way they will come back, right? But now, these guys have not only come back, but they have even brought more than two of them and even food for her people. She had to make these guys help her mother; it was her last hope.
