An Attack

Chris's training continued in the cover of the night. His training had only one purpose it was to increase his physical strength.

This meant every night he was pushed to the maximum. There was a lot of running, followed by exercises to increase his strength, followed by a lot of jumping. There was no respite, with Roger always shadowing him.

He would be so tired the next day that he will sleep through the whole day. Chris missed visiting his brother and Sarah, even if he wanted to he couldn't as most of the time he didn't have any strength left after the training. Others including Sarah felt that the lack of magic within Chris was making him tired and weak.

With time he started making progress in his training and he could feel his physical condition improving. Roger would notice and increase the intensity of the training.

One day he asked Roger how people with magic affinity would train. He guessed it will be different from the way he was being trained.

Roger replied that post the naming ceremony everything changes for a person in this world, they will start feeling the magic molecules around them. This is a very confusing phase that requires proper guidance.

Once they are able to clearly feel the presence, a martial arts discipline is taught. The martial arts help them to gather and condense these molecules into their body and use it at will, this is not an easy method and takes years to master. Few families like the Dreux and Draconate clan are known for their better compatibility with an element, often showing high mastery at a very young age.

Chris realised again how odd it was for him to turn up like this with no magic.

These basics of magic are taught by authorised tutors. A family like the Druex would normally hire a tutor from the Magical Academy, for common citizens the church will give these lessons.

--------

Time flew by and it was almost one and half years since the training began, the training had progressed well for Chris, he could feel that his physical strength had drastically improved in the last few months.

In another six months, his brother would have his naming ceremony. Chris hoped he didn't have the same misfortune as his.

One night, during the training, Chris noticed Roger going on alert.

He shouted "Master Philip?", Chris's eyes caught something headed towards him, it was coming very fast, he had no time to react, but just at the right moment Roger arrived in front of him deflecting whatever was headed towards him, he looked up to see Roger's whole hands from his shoulder was covered in what looked like scales, he deflected the projectile with them.

Unauthorized duplication: this tale has been taken without consent. Report sightings.

Then from the shadow emerged a figure "My my I didn't expect to see the infamous dog of the Druex family outside, and who do we have here with him, the Druex family's first son? Isn't this a bonus for me?"

Roger stood right in front of Chris.

The person was cloaked in black, there were no visible weapons, are they hidden? Chris wondered.

The figure vanished, so did Roger. Chris realised it was not that they vanished, they were moving so fast that Chris couldn't notice their movements. His eyes barely adapted to their speed. He saw what the projectile was earlier, they were blades made out of wind, he was throwing them from his hands, he was a wind assassin. Roger kept deflecting them with his scales, they were so fast that Chris was really straining to keep a track of them.

The assassin's movements were very similar to Roger's but it felt different. Chris noted that they were equally matched, but Roger was not as swift as he remembered seeing him in the moonlit night. It was as if he was holding back, was it because of Chris? was he worried about his safety? He again felt helpless as a side actor, even after more than a year of training, he couldn't imagine matching up to their speed. How did he ever hope to match a magic-user?

Maybe sensing this, Roger started speaking, "Master Philip, I want you to observe this fight, this is how magic users will fight, you will one day have your own fight like this."

The assassin was visibly annoyed as not only he was not able to get an upper hand on Roger, but he was casually talking to Chris and in fact giving him lessons. Chris couldn't help but feel amazed at Roger.

The assassin started showing desperation in his attacks, but the momentum started changing and the fight ended quickly, the assassin couldn't keep up with Roger's movements and the scales on his hands just made it worse, Roger started making some serious damage, with the assassin unable to fight anymore.

Roger held him in his hands and asked "Who send you? Why are you here?", the assassin with his blood-filled mouth smirked and said, "Oh we already got our target."

It hit Roger and Chris at the same time "Mother", "Mistress"? Roger knocked the assassin unconscious and they both rushed to the mansion, Chris asked Roger to head back and that he will be ok as he was not their target.

Roger went ahead, with Chris trailing him, he again realised the gap between them by observing how fast Roger moved.

While running to the mansion, Chris hoped that nothing had happened to Sarah and his brother. With a grim feeling, he rushed.

There was no visible sign of trouble in the mansion, he rushed to Sarah's room. He entered and couldn't believe his eyes.

Three assassins were lying dead on the floor, Sarah sat there covered in blood with Roger beside her (his scales were not visible on his hands anymore).

Chris rushed towards her "Are you ok Mother", she looked up "Oh Philip my child, are you ok", she embraced him and then he saw wrapped in a bloody blanket was his little brother. Seeing the blood, Chris panicked, but on closer inspection, he realized his brother was okay, maybe unconscious due to the shock.

Even Sarah other than having some minor injuries was fine, most of the blood on her was from the assassins who she managed to kill.

It made him realise why Sarah was called the "Immovable Sarah", and why she is a level two earth mage. The assassins clearly underestimated her.

But what bothered him more was that someone had attacked his family. For the first time since coming to this world, he felt rage, a rage like he never knew he had. Though he felt completely helpless earlier, he knew it for a fact that whoever had harmed his family.

"They will pay".
