Chapter 1

"Brother Lin, Brother Lin!" A sharp call and the continuous loud banging on the door startled me awake.

I sat bolt upright and looked around wildly, unsure of what had happened and where I was. My first instinct was to run, hide and find somewhere safe. But when I noticed where I was and that I wasn't in any immediate danger, my fear subsided.

Slowly, my mind started to come back to life and memories returned to me. I looked around at the wooden thatched hut as I remembered why I was here in a bed made out of mud, covered in blood and bruises, my clothes were torn off and my leg bleeding profusely.

I winced in pain and quickly stood up. The room was barely big enough for the bed, the small table, a chair, and the fireplace which burned with a few embers glowing softly. It was a simple hut, nothing more than four walls and a roof with some straw in between. The hut looked as if it hadn't seen the sun for decades, and yet the room smelled sweet and clean. I breathed in and smiled to myself.

After wiping off the dried sweat on my forehead and looking around one more time, I made my way to the wooden door to stop that god-awful banging. When I got there I found a young man with curly brown hair tied in a ponytail holding onto his ears as he pounded on the door, his whole body shaking with each blow.

"Hey! Hey! Stop it!" I shouted and the boy jumped at hearing my voice. His face immediately lit up when he saw me, and he ran forward as fast as his legs could carry him, throwing himself at me, knocking me over backward on the ground, and causing me to yelp in surprise.

"What are you doing?!" I exclaimed as I lay on my back, holding my bruised ribs, while the boy hugged my arm tightly.

"Brother Lin, you're finally awake!" He scrambled to get off of me and helped me sit up, his expression one of worry as he held up his hands and looked at my leg.

"This looks pretty bad, I don't think we should try to fix it today." The boy continued examining my wound carefully, frowning deeply as he inspected it thoroughly.

"You'll need at least a week of rest to heal completely. Don't move it for now" he said as he put my foot onto his shoulder and started to examine it. I just simply nodded my head and nodded my head resigning myself to the boy's inception.

"There's no need to rush, Brother Lin, take your time," he said, giving me a small green wooden gourd that smelled funny, filled with water and herbs used as medicine by the handymen of the sect. He gave it to me and told me to drink it. I did as he instructed and drank the concoction slowly. It tasted sour, like vinegar, yet somehow refreshing. It was as if a tonic was taking place inside of me, bringing with it great energy.

As soon as I finished drinking it, the boy removed his hands. I looked down at my leg and realized that I wasn't hurt anywhere. Only a couple of small cuts and bruises remained, not much worse than before.

"You really scared me there!" he said sheepishly and scratched the side of his head bashfully. He was wearing the tattered robe I'd given him, and his cheeks were already red from overexerting himself.

I looked closely at the boy, his name was Xia Changge, another handymen disciple of the court of the Yin Yang sect. I'd befriended him a couple of days ago when I'd first arrived in this world.

We became fast friends, both being very introverted people who tended to avoid social interaction. However, unlike the average person, Xia Changge didn't shy away from confrontation. He always approached me with a confident smile on his face and a strong sense of righteousness.

He was only seventeen years old who was a late bloomer with Five Elemental attributed spiritual root which was considered a trash Talent, yet he already worked in the kitchen Under the head chef having Knack for spiritual cooking. He worked hard and was extremely diligent, and he was also very talented. He was a natural at cooking and cleaning, and he was quite good at it too. He was also very kind and gentle, and he was always willing to lend a helping hand whenever I needed it. He was also very handsome, with a pair of bright brown eyes, and a full set of perfectly straight teeth.

Xia Changge was incredibly intelligent and well-behaved and unlike me, He had a somewhat bright future ahead of him.

We have spent hours talking before but today we sat in silence as he cleaned my wounds up and fixed the broken bones in my leg. After I had finished eating, I washed myself and put on new bandages with his help. It felt weird and uncomfortable but I didn't care too much about it. I was tired. I wanted nothing more than to go and sleep..

"Brother Lin I will be going now, please watch over yourself until I return, okay?" Xia Changge stood up and walked away.

"Yeah..." I mumbled. After he'd gone, I laid back on the floor and fell asleep quickly once again.

When I woke up the morning sun had disappeared and two bright moons were streaming white soft light into the hut and it was already midday. I stretched my arms and legs then sat up straight. My right leg had stopped hurting and throbbed a little bit now and then but it seemed fine. I felt a little better.

I looked around me to find that the hut had been emptied of everything except a few pieces of furniture, and there were no traces of anybody else in the hut. I got up and went outside.

My surrounding was deserted.

There was nobody around, which wasn't surprising since I was close to the forest. Although I couldn't see much, I knew this Forest was filled with both spiritual and mortal beasts, both extremely dangerous since even a mortal beast could rip apart a low-level Qi gathering cultivator not to mention a mortal like me, so it wouldn't make sense for anyone to live here. Yet here I was.

Taken from Royal Road, this narrative should be reported if found on Amazon.

I sighed and pushed away the melancholy, as I made my way to a very shallow stream right around the corner. The water was clear and clear as glass, shimmering beautifully under the moonlight. It reflected a beautiful blue color and sparkled brightly.

The sound of flowing water and singing birds calmed my nerves. I leaned my head against the smooth surface and closed my eyes, letting my mind wander freely.

After a long moment, I opened my eyes and stared at the reflection of a normal Asian dude with long straight eyebrows, a big rounded nose, and almond-shaped brown eyes.

The sight was strange to me because that wasn't what I used to look like It had been forty-eight days since I woke up in this body and ever since I came to this world.

The boy's name or rather my Name now was Lin Yun the seventh child of Tang Rou the chief alchemist of the Lin family And Lin Yu the Sixth young master and master of fields of Lin mansion, born and raised in a highly combative family of immortal cultivators, Lin Yun was an unlucky fellow with an absent father an abusive mother and highly competitive and cruel siblings.

His childhood and youth were a blur in my memory, although I remember my mother telling me many times how he was an idiot and useless, and that his older brother was more competent and strong than him.

That was until He - no - until I turned seven that was when me and my maid were suddenly sent off to the Yin Yang Harmony sect, to become servants for my third uncle an elder brother of my father.

I was terrified and confused but hopeful for a better life only to find more pain and suffering my maid my childhood friend, my Dao companion, and the only person who treated me like a human being was discovered To not only have a three-element spirit root talent along with a rare constitution of Pure Yin body and Thus she left the Lin family to join a Golden core elder of the sect as a concubine and I was Thrown away as a handyman in the outer court by my uncle as a punishment for failing to keep a promising talent in the family.

And that's where things went downhill from there.

Within a matter of days, I received a letter informing me that I would no longer be a member of The Yangzhou Lin Family And that I was no longer allowed to use the surname Lin then the bullying of the other handymen started my life going from bad to unbearable.

They teased me mercilessly and constantly tormented me and bullied me to such an extent that I lost all faith in humanity and abandoned the thought of ever becoming a powerful cultivator.

So I just gave up trying to learn anything and instead spent my days picking wild vegetables, mushrooms, and berries from the Forest. Until the day my former maid or rather Lin Yun Maid Liu Nianwei came to his door and humiliated him by not only beating him up and also tearing up the marriage contract between them and breaking his heart, causing Li Yun to lose the will to live and decided to commit suicide after Liu Nianwei had promised to take care of him for life and to let him choose his own fate. And when he died, I was born, I unconsciously touched the rope burns on my neck feeling the lingering fear of death.

I woke up forty-eight days ago in Lin Yun's body who had recently hung himself to death, in a bloody fantasy world of immortal cultivators, monsters, and extreme danger, where I could get killed at any time due to my lack of cultivation and intelligence, Another sigh escaped me as I thought about my bleak future.

At first, when I found out I was in a world where XianXia was all too real I was super excited I began to dream of becoming a powerful immortal cultivator, flying on my sword and vanquishing enemies with Daoist magic until I discovered I only had a mortal root unable to sense the Qi of the world and thus unable to cultivate after having my dreams crushed All I wanted was to finally start a peaceful life where nothing could bother me anymore, but of course, that didn't seem to be happening anytime soon.

In six months there will be another assessment where all those unawakened people will be assessed to check if they have to awaken their spiritual roots or not, Awaken ones would be reassigned as per their talent which can be explained by the type quality of the spiritual root, Spiritual roots can be explained as I understand them as them as an antenna for Qi.

If you don't have the antenna, you can't receive the signal.

Qi is The natural energy that is present in the world that nourishes everything and gives rise to all living beings. If one doesn't have a spiritual root, one cannot receive the natural Qi of the world, and thus cannot live.

In this world, Qi and spiritual roots are central to the concept of personal power and growth. Spiritual roots are considered to be the foundation of a cultivator's potential and are assessed in order to determine an individual's innate talent for cultivation.

The spiritual root is essentially an antenna that allows a person to receive and channel Qi, which is the vital energy that flows through all living things.

Without a spiritual root, a person cannot cultivate and access the Qi of the world, which means they cannot grow stronger or develop special abilities.

In this world, the process of cultivation involves refining and strengthening one's spiritual roots, so that one can access greater amounts of Qi and achieve greater levels of power. The more I learned about cultivation, Qi and spirit root the more I became confused At first I thought Since If Qi running through one's meridian is indistinguishable from some external type of Qi, its owner can grow stronger simply by sitting in an environment filled with this Qi. It's like placing a river in an ocean.

Furthermore, by finding an improved version of this Qi, these cultivators can evolve simply by interacting with it! Even if the owner has the worst talent of the five-element root. Just like that, This would explain the difference between the creatures in a regular and a cultivation world.

Why their cultivation is so powerful and easy?

Why they can effortlessly abuse external alchemy and absorb external Qi?

Why cultivating without them is much harder.

Everything makes sense now. Sadly that's not how it works If simply gathering natural Qi was enough, an empire could make thousands of cultivators pour Qi into their Soldiers. Then use those soldiers to enslave more cultivators and grow faster.

But, usually, natural Qi doesn't work this way. People have to convert natural Qi into human Qi before they can use it, and that is done naturally by a person's roots.

Thus without a spiritual root, there is no cultivation as mortal roots are unable to sense any Qi, even if I was able to absorb Qi I wouldn't be able to guide it or circulate it, spiritual roots are portrayed as a key factor in a character's potential for power.

Simply put Spiritual Roots allow a mortal to absorb Spiritual Qi and to become an Immortal cultivator, and Spiritual roots can be categorized into five categories: metal, wood, water, fire, and earth. Spiritual roots with a mixture of four or five attributes are known as “False Spiritual Roots”.

Spiritual roots of two to three attributes are known as “True Spiritual Roots”.

Spiritual roots with only one attribute are known as “Heavenly Spiritual Roots” and spiritual roots with no attribute are called "mortal Spiritual roots" Other than those there are also "Radiant Spiritual roots" which are the Spiritual roots that don't belong to any of the five Earthly attributes but belong to Heavenly element attributes of thunder, ice, wind, darkness, and light, there were also "holy spirit roots" and "bestial spirit roots" but none of it matter since I had a mortal spirit root.
