The Shape

The Shape

As we all looked at the house, I heard footsteps come up behind us. My heart was beating hard and fast in my chest as I turned around. There stood a man about six foot in height wearing a blue mechanic jumpsuit and a mask that was white and a little rough for wear; there was also brown ratty hair that was also part of the mask. When my eyes looked down, I caught sight of a knife in his hand. It was one of those kitchen knives that one uses for cutting up vegetables and it looked very sharp. I looked the man over again and couldn’t get over how tall he was. He could reach the top shelves in grocery stores easily!

As I was staring at the tall person who was standing menacingly, I felt someone grab my hand and pulled me away hurriedly. I was getting dragged into the corn stalk as I kept trying to keep my vision on the tall person who looked like he was hunting for his prey. Eventually, my sight was cut off from the dangerous-looking human being and I finally turned my gaze to see who was dragging me along, only to see Dwight.

“We have to go!” When he noticed that I was now moving of my own volition, he let go of my hand and I ran along with him. Quite a few times, I had to duck down to not get hit in the face when I felt my head snap back and a stinging on my forehead since I got hit in the face by corn. I heard laughter beside me and turned to glare at Dwight. When we got to the falling apart red barn, we slowed down and eventually stopped moving. With my hands on my knees, I panted, trying to catch my breath when I heard, “why didn’t you run when you saw him?” My eyes blinked at him a few times before understanding his question.

“I don’t know. I didn’t feel like I needed to run. For all we know, he could have been nice and willing to help! Excuse me for not running when all the other hooligans were! Besides, did you see how tall he was? Holy shit, it was awesome!” It was very much clear that I was getting defensive and excited, but really, that man was tall! In the distance I heard someone scream and it sounded like a male. Since Dwight was with me, the only person it could have been was Jeff. Both Dwight and I looked at each other at the same time with fear in our eyes.

“Now are you glad that I dragged you away? That scream could have been yours.” Again, it sounded like he was a bit angry with some worry in the tone. But I don’t see why he would worry about me, we literally met today. At the same time, I can understand where he was coming from. Our friends were in danger and we didn’t even know where they were. “We need to group up again and then get out of here.” Dwight then started moving again without even checking to see if I was following. It was hard to see not only in the dark, but the corn stalks were obstructing my view. Somehow, I was able to keep up with him, spotting him through the corn after my eyes had adjusted to the dark.

When we made it to the edge of the cornfield, I saw Jeff hanging on a large hook by his shoulder. I couldn’t stop myself from wincing when I saw the wound as the blood seeped through his shirt. There had to be a way to get him down without causing him anymore pain than he was already in. From the corner of my eye, I saw a shape move towards Jeff and focused my vision on it. There I saw Kate, making her way towards our companion who was hanging. Her arms wrapped around his dangling legs and hoisted him off the hook causing another scream to echo around which more than likely alerted the man who had done this. Both Dwight and I ran over to Jeff to see if there was anything we can do.

“Jeff what happened?” I heard Dwight ask from beside me. He asked the question that had been burning in my mind after seeing him hanging on the hook. It was a horrifying sight.

“So, I was running away from that tall freak, right? There was no one around me but him and I don’t know how he does it, but he was able to walk really fast.” It was clear that he was in a lot of pain as he tried to inform us what had happened through gritted teeth. “Anyway, he stabbed me in the back with his knife, but I had to keep going despite being in pain. Needless to say, he caught me and threw me over his shoulder like I was a sack of potatoes. Then I felt myself get lifted and felt the hook go through my shoulder where I had been hanging. This guy is no joke. He’s out to kill and we are his prey.” I felt bad for the way he was treated and how badly wounded he was. No one deserves that.

I looked around to find something to staunch the bleeding with, but obviously there was nothing since we were in the middle of the cornfield and there would obviously be no med kit. With quick thinking, I tore the hem of my shirt and tied it around his wound tightly. It obviously wasn’t going to do much good with his wound, but something was better than nothing. I do believe the better healer in the group was the only one who could possibly blend into the darkness, she’d survive easily this night.

“We should find a med kit or find Claudette to give him his best odds. All this bleeding out isn’t good for him and if it isn’t treated soon, it could fester and possibly get infected since from afar the hook looks rusted.” I knew the danger he was in if he didn’t get help soon. The wound needed to be cleaned out first and foremost. “We could all go back to the and maybe look for some rubbing alcohol or any alcohol to clean the wound out.”

“Alright, lets go with that plan. And we should hurry up; I’m sure that last yell you made- “Dwight looked directly at the older college student. “Would have alerted that man to our location.” Immediately, I felt a hand grab mine again and noticed it was the nerd again. What gives him the right to constantly grab my hand? Immediately, I took my hand back and stood beside Jeff was we all moved through the cornfield as fast as we could which was a bit difficult with Jeebus constantly tripping.

While running, I noticed someone from the corner of my eye and it made me slow down my footing so attention would not be brought to myself nor the friend I was helping. The shape had walked by without even noticing us. I heard Jeff let out a sigh of relief and continue to walk in case he was in hearing range. My eyes had caught sight of a shadow standing over us before I felt a shove and heard a grunt from our friend. I caught my footing before I fell down onto the dirt filled ground and turned around quickly only to see Jeff get snatched up by the man who literally was silent. I did not hear any footsteps whatsoever except the two who were ahead of us and our own. How could he have snuck up on us the way he did?

Out of mere curiosity, I followed the direction where I saw the silent man carried our friend. I obviously wasn’t very silent in my movements like someone we have run into multiple times now. I dodged every corn that was in my way. I did not want to lose them nor leave them out of my sight. Finally! I saw him carrying Jeff out into the clearing of the field. With quiet ease, I crept up past a tractor and towards a hay bale, staying out of sight. I knelt down and poked my head to watch him lift our not so light friend easily, only to throw him back on the hook in the same exact wound.

My blood was pounding in my ears as I remained in my spot. It was fascinating to see someone so strong to just basically throw someone on an object that was a bit taller than even them. How much muscle was under that jumpsuit? He clearly had to be ripped for that was wow. Even my jaw had dropped slightly from the delightful sight. I don’t even care if he was very silent or menacing, in fact, for some reason I found that attractive. I may possibly have a screw loose in my head to find someone like that… hot.

I watched him stare at Jeff for a bit while tilting his head right to left with a slow and deliberate movement. Slowly, he turned away from the one who had been hooked almost like he was looking for someone else. I kept my eyes on him the whole time when I saw the shape begin to move towards the cornfield. Taking a step out from my hiding spot to follow him, I remembered Jeebus hanging by the hook and I slowly turned my gaze to look at him.

“How’s it hanging?” I couldn’t help myself from making the pun and he was literally hanging there! The temptation was too strong to resist.

“Yeah, you’re funny; now get me down from here.” I rolled my eyes, but knew I owed it to him for shoving me out of the way taking the hook for me if it was Mr. Mysterious intentions. Perhaps he was a tunneling asshole who goes for the same person they had already injured. Who knows? I looked back in the direction where he went before pulling Jeff off the hook by grabbing him by the legs since I wasn’t tall enough to reach his armpits. “Instead of wasting time to tend to my wounds here, we should just meet them at the agreed spot.”

“Alrighty.” Helping Jeff by staying close to him, we walked over to the direction where I remember the white house was. I kept looking in the directions of the cornfield to see if I would spot the muscle man, but sadly, he was nowhere in sight. But I do know, he was around; perhaps he was just waiting for someone. Or he could already have found someone. What if he finds Claudette? No one knew where she was after all. Though, if she was found, we’d have heard her screams by now. In some ways, she was curious to know what that girl was doing. More than likely, if I knew her well enough, she will be looking for leaves or some form of herbs to use for healing to keep herself from getting any infections if she ever got hurt. At least some of us had some basic survival skills and can help others.

As we approached the house which was coming into view, I couldn’t help but look back. I could have sworn from the distance that I saw the menacing handsome stranger again, but I couldn’t be quite sure. So far, he seemed quite good at hiding from our view. But the next time I see him, I will follow him and continue to do so. He has very much piqued my interest.
