Spring Vacation

Spring Vacation

Here I was, sitting in a friend’s SUV, on a way to a vacation spot. Personally, I didn’t care to go, I would rather be sitting at home playing video games. Yes, there, it was said. I am a gamer. Silently, my gaze turns to look out the window as I listen to music while wondering how in the world I got suckered into joining the Spring trip. Sadly, though, I already knew how I stuck joining my group of friends. They had kept bothering me about it till I said okay. Who really wants to be the odd man out? Or in this case woman.

As we continued to drive out on the highway, fields passed by as well as other cars. Of course, every now and again a bug will hit the windshield and splatter all over it. How disgusting is that? At some point during the long drive, everyone had decided to sing. Everyone but myself that is. At least it wasn’t too quiet to be awkward. I finally turned my eyes away from the window and looked towards the front to see what the driver was doing since they hadn’t pulled out the map yet. After a sigh had escaped my lips from boredom, I felt movement beside me like someone was leaning closer to me which caused my head to turn in the direction to see who it was.

“Are you looking forward to this trip?” Why was this person talking to me? He had black hair with greenish-blue eyes with black glasses. Was he bored or something? It would be rude to ignore his question and we were in the same friend group after all.

“Hm not really, I’m a stay at home kind of person unless it’s for competitions. What about you? Are you looking forward to this?” Who was this person friend’s with in the group again? In a way, I found it weird that someone I don’t really know was talking to me. While on this trip it was probably better to make new friends anyway.

“Um I guess. I mean it’s nice to get out every now and again.” Was it just me or was he a bit awkward? What was this guy’s name again? I also think I’ve seen him somewhere. Wasn’t he the manager at Wal-Mart? If that was the case for the guy, I feel bad for him. People are just plain mean sometimes. But why was he slightly dressed up for? Was there an event planned that I don’t know about?

Here I was sporting my usual capri jeans with white and black stripes top and my purple sweater over it. Why was this guy all dressed up for? Everyone else was wearing their casual outfits too! I was so confused. Though, while in confusion, I had to admit… The nerd looked good. Not that I found him attractive or anything. Didn’t really know him either. But that didn’t mean I couldn’t get to know him or the others well.

“I don’t think I ever got your name, even though we hang out with the same group of people…”

“I’m Dwight Fairfield. I tagged along with Claudette.” That meant she was the one that had brought him into the group. She was a sweet person basically the healer out of all of us. Then we have Jake who was the jokester of the group, Kate who was more or less the hoochie lady which was what we liked to call her, Jeff whom we enjoy calling Jeebus only because he looks like Jesus. And of course, there is me, Feng Min, the technology savvy one. Though, I wonder what Dwight was going to be like in the group.

“I’m sure you’ll get along with Jeff and Jake. I’m Feng Min by the way, it’s nice to officially meet you.” In a way it was nice to meet someone sort of new? He was new to me anyway. Hopefully we will get along, so far, he seems like the type to get along with everyone. But assumptions were dangerous. They could potentially get someone in trouble.

“It’s nice to meet you as well.” Well that was short and simple. I noticed that he had started to look around a bit. The sense of awkwardness had begun to wash over me the longer the silence ticked by. I had started to look back out the window to keep myself busy, but yet it did nothing for me. Wanting to see what the others were doing, I looked around at everyone and noticed some were playing on their phones and others bopped to whatever was playing in their music devices. That actually seemed like a good idea! Why didn’t I think of it sooner? I grabbed my purse from under the seat before getting my MP3 player out and unwrapped my headphones from the small device. As I was placing an ear bud in my ear, l heard the skanky lady finally speak up.

“Are we there yet? I’m starting to get bored just sitting here.” I couldn’t help but look over in her direction. In a way I had to agree with her; it was boring just sitting in the vehicle, but it was a way to get to our destination where ever that was. It’s sad… I don’t even know where it was we were heading to. I just hope that while in boredom, she doesn’t sing country; that’d make my ears bleed.

“Where is there by the way? Someone didn’t tell me.” As I emphasized on the someone part, I stared at Kate. Yes, she’s the reason I’m here. We may not be close, but she was the one who begged the most out of everyone. Though, they all did their fair share coaxing me like I had stated earlier. A couple of eyes did turn towards me with what looked like surprise? Did they not know?

“Do you not know where we are going?” Jake asked like he was preparing for some jokes on my expense. It was something he did. And everyone usually laughed at his jokes and go along with them. The only thing I could do to answer his question was shake my head no. “How the fuck do you not know where we are going!?”

“I was never told where we were going despite the many times I’ve asked.” Glancing over at the blonde woman who wears trampy clothes, I saw her turn away with a little smirk. Sometimes she was annoying, but at least she’s a good person when she wanted to be.

Eventually we had made a turn somewhere on the road. For some reason it didn’t seem right to me. Were we going the right way? The further we went in the direction we were going in the denser it got. Trees were surrounding the area. It also didn’t help that the sky was dark. Out of nowhere, one of the wheels of the SUV had popped with a loud bang that had reverberated through the vehicle.
