18TH GEAR - I’M NOT YOUR FAIRY GODMOTHER!
“Good morning, Jonathan! Ah, I mean Coach! W-Wait, I mean Jon! I’m still confused, tahahaha!”
Flu greeted me at our usual place first thing in the morning with a dumb yet adorable smile. Seeing a cute girl like her every morning on the beachside certainly gives me the motivation to go to school.
“Good morning, Flu,” I said as I smiled back.
“Hey, hey, what is that you’re reading?” Flu looked at the Speedmage Tactics book in my hand full of curiosity.
“This? It’s a guide written by my father. He was once a coach of Speedmages, so I borrowed it to aid me in my coaching lessons for you guys later.”
“That’s awesome! I bet your father is a really cool guy!” Flu pumped her fists.
“That’s what they often say.” I flipped the book and showed her the Speed Spells section for beginners page. “Look, it even has spells for beginners for you to learn.”
“Huh? Afterimage… Phoenix Arrow… Blink… These are awesome!” Flu's blue eyes twinkled like the milky way galaxy.
“Isn’t it?” I smiled proudly. “I’m planning to teach you these spells, but unfortunately I can’t do magic. I think it will be better for you to borrow this book for you to study it yourself.”
“Really!?” Flu’s eyes sparkled. “Aren’t you going to use it?”
“I already memorized the training regimen we will conduct for this week. And as your coach, it is my duty to make you as knowledgeable in speed spells as much as possible.”
“Thanks, Jon! You’re the best!” Flu’s bright smile is more dazzling than the morning sun.
She gently got the book and started to read the spells. She was too distracted that she just followed my trail to the train station. It was actually a good thing to give her the book this early in the morning so that she won’t ask me to take her hand and do some speed boost running to the academy. Just for this day, I’m safe from her klutzy antics.
“I’m so excited to try these spells!” Flu giggled.
“Please don’t. You can let loose after class during club practice.”
“Roger that, coach!” Flu saluted with a grin.
Flu continued reading and reading the book for 45 minutes of the ride on the train and ten minutes of walking towards the Saint Crusade Academy. She was still reading the book when we entered the gates, we walked through the corridors, and even when entered the classroom.
Flu even ignored her friends, skipping their morning greetings. She just sat on her desk, her attention fully bought by the Speedmage Tactics book I lent to her. Her love for Speed Battles must be too huge to warrant this kind of focus coming from her.
That’s a good mindset for Speedmages. In a Speed Battle, 100% of your focus should be on playing the sport as it involves physical, magical, and mental exercises.
I just hope that this love for Speed Battles will not hinder her academic performance, since most of the time she’s either gazing at the windows or just mentally absent while daydreaming.

“Now class, if you look at the next page of the chapter, you can see that the subject-verb agreement…”
It was Monday, so Miss Terror- I mean Professor Azure our first period. This English teacher of ours started discussing as a normal instructor would do, and I was kind of immersed in the lesson until I heard her call out a name that gave chills down my spine.
“Miss Asahime! You’re not hiding it properly!” Miss Terror scolded when she noticed that Flu’s English textbook was upside down, and the Speedmage Tactics was well opened above the textbook.
This content has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere.
“A-Ah!” Flu panicked as she flipped the English textbook to the correct position. “I-I’m sorry! I’m sorry!”
“Focus on this class, Miss Asahime!”
“Y-Yes ma’am!” Flu said.
But she continued reading the Speedmage Tactics book anyway.
It took a few minutes before Professor Azure noticed it once again. Miss Terror grinned with menace. No, a grin is not a proper term. I’m pretty sure she’s pissed! So she silently went behind Flu and then lightly tapped her head with a rolled newspaper.
“Kya!” Flu cried.
Miss Terror immediately grabbed the Speedmage Tactics book away from Flu’s hand!
“I will confiscate this so you can focus on this class!”
“Ah! I’m sorry! I’m sorry, Miss Terror- I mean Professor Azure! Please give me back the book!”
Professor Azure’s eyebrows irked, and her threatening smile went wide.
“Miss Terror would want to speak to you at the Students Affairs Office after class.”
Professor Azure left the heartbroken and terrified Flu who looked pale and petrified. It is as if the pink idiot just met Medusa’s gaze.
That was the final nail in the coffin. My prized book, now gone and confiscated to the most notorious office in the academy. All I can do is cry inside my heart and grit.
“I-I’m sorry, Jon! Uwuuuu!” Flu cried to me.
You know what? I want to punch her in the face right now, but I don’t hit girls. Especially if it’s an adorable girl like her. Believe me, I’m trying so hard to suppress this anger!

When the bell rang to mark the end of the last period, I immediately stood up, ready to go to the Students Affairs Office. It’s about lunch now, but I can’t afford to waste any time having that book confiscated.
“Come on, Flu. Let’s recover that book you worked hard to get confiscated.” I said in a hurried tone with a sprinkle of sarcasm.
“You’re going to the Students Affairs Office with me? You’re such a lifesaver, coach!” Flu clasped her hand and prayed cheerfully.
This idiot is always happy even though she’s in a pinch, and she always needs my help to get out of the idiotic situations she’s in. She may be too naive, but I had to give her a wake-up call because I’m not a knight in shining armor that will be able to save or protect her.
“Do you see wings on me, Flu?” I gritted.
“Wings? None, coach!” Flu said cheerfully.
“That’s because I’m not your fairy fucking godmother, you idiot!” I yelled.
“Uwuuuu!” Flu cried as she curled up like an armadillo and protected her head. “I’m so sorry!”
“Now let’s go and get my book!”
“R-Right!”
I marched outside our classroom and went through the corridors until I saw the door that has the label Students Affairs Office. This will be the second time I’ll be here, and it’s barely even a month since I enrolled in this school. Of course, Flu is with me since she’s the one being summoned to this very office.
“Excuse us…” I murmured as I knocked three times before opening the door.
I was surprised that Professor Azure was there on her table, laid back on her comfortable chair. And she got the Speedmage Tactics book she confiscated in her hand. She seemed to be reading it for quite a while now.
“Miss Asahime, about time. Oh, Mister Wardenorth. Saves me some time to summon you.” Professor Azure smiled when she saw both of us. Somehow, the terror teacher vibes on her are gone.
“U-Um!” Flu immediately went forward and bowed vigorously. “I-I’m so sorry for being out of focus on the earlier class! I promise I will not do it again, so please give back Jon’s guidebook!”
“Here.” Professor Azure laid down the book on her desk. “Miss Asahime, I will still need you to give me an apology letter to be submitted tomorrow.”
“Y-Yes ma’am!” Flu saluted. “T-Thank you, ma’am!”
The pink-haired idiot immediately grabbed the book and returned it to me. Then she apologetically smiled which made my heart melt a little bit.
Professor Azure then looked at us with a smile on her face. She seemed to scan us from head to toe and has been wary of our body motions. Then she looked at me.
“I heard from Ericka that you joined the Merry Knights Speedmage Guild. I’m glad that the club will not be disbanded. So how was it?”
“It was okay, ma’am,” I said.
I’m kind of frugal with words because I do not want to complain about our club building that looks like a drug den.
“You are the eldest son of Professor Flint Wardenorth, is that correct?”
“Yes ma’am,” I said.
Professor Azure then looked at Flu, and Flu stiffened due to nervousness.
“And Miss Asahime here defeated Tezza Flaschk on her very first Speed Battle, is that correct?”
“Y-Yes! T-Though, it’s just beginner’s luck, tahahaha…”
Professor Azure nodded and smiled as if she was just a woman who just found inner peace.
“I can see promising members of the new Merry Knights. Ericka might be right that you two have what it takes.”
Flu and I looked at each other with a confused gazes. We don’t know what Professor Azure was talking about, and we are afraid to ask either. We just stayed silent.
“Say, how about we conduct an academy-wide training camp with all the Speedmage Guilds of this school? It will help you widen your perspective and learn more about the arts of Speed Battles.”
“Does that mean Eaglecrest, Cool Escape, and Merry Knights will collaborate in a single training camp?” I asked.
"Precisely."
“That sounds exciting!” Flu pumped her fists. “I wanted to meet fast Speedmages!”
“It’s decided then. I will inform Ericka that the camp will be conducted in two weeks.” Professor Azure said.
Maybe Professor Azure is not so much as a terror after all
