Chapter 07: Betraying the concept of betrayal

Zarlessa eclipse/Human/ 19 lvl 1 ?????? ????? ?????? ????? ?????? ????? ?????? ?????

Moving a hand to protect from the setting suns final breath, my deep-sea blue eyes burning from adjusting to this light. nonchalantly floating in the aquamarine tinted sea with a dragon corpse, a knocked out dark elf whom for some reason I felt infatuated with, and a one-armed ogre who looked like she could kill an ox by accident. My head pounding only knowing my name and Jayce. the one-armed ogre woman said nothing, with a pained look and shaking arm she pointed up to the water surface. A shadow from a world and on a more personal note, life ending wave minutes away from breaking on top of our position left me wading in place stunned. All at once the cold hit me followed immediately by the need for oxygen. Due to the hypothermic temperatures, I was unable to control my breathing, moving my head quickly side to side I saw the Jayce descending slowly, deeper into the water I swam down in a hurry, moving my limbs like a frog to conserve energy. Long black tendrils of hair blocking my vision as I would start and stop my momentum with each kick with each jelly fish like form. Reaching him then wrapping my arms around his waist I kicked as hard and fast as I could towards the surface still being brought down with him instead. Darkness creepily encroached my vision. Realizing how futile this rescue attempt was I looked around for any other option. The ogre impersonating a woman started to focus her magical intent. Not having a choice while not knowing who was friend or foe I stared at Jayce's floating body his pelted jacket moving like grass in a strong wind. Ten meters deeper a metal staff harboring small purple flames that were slowly dying out flickered atop black blade. Rising towards me as if the waters wanted me to use it. Instinctively, I knew that was salvation. I dropped the unconscious body and with the last of my oxygen I reached out with my fingers extended. Before touching the weapon, I fell victim to sleeps temptation. My body slowly drifted to the staff, then a violent shove by an unknown current of water finished my journey. My index finger touched. A visible shockwave of energy exploded through the water as my hand became a fist. Purple flames leapt to me but didn't burn.

In my mind flashes of a world cracking with flaming chasms spread across its surface like glass, millions of prayers unanswered turning to spite, hate filled attempts to gain divinties attention just to be further ignored in turn, a massive battle with proportions no being mortal or otherwise had even had the displeasure of witnessing, a newborn welp of a god playing at understanding, my... death? and one final flash of a kind eyed purple snake nestled in my lap. BOOM. My body lit up with power, that bastard!

Having my memories back even temporarily gave me time and power. Both of which were diminishing quickly, with a wave of my free hand a portal with purple flames making a border to a black mirror with sparkling miniature stars and cosmos interweaving with asteroids appeared. Forcefully using pure magical intent, I put the overgrown winged lizard's body into my cosmic storage. At the same time lifting the staff forming a purple tinted magical barrier around myself and Jayce. Painstakingly expelling all the water within, Jayce's body landed with a thud. Channeling pure magic made lightning bolts of varying colors and elements bounce all around reaching the barrier but not escaping. Occasionally these bolts would land onto my skin causing scorch marks to burn away flesh as if disintegrating beneath the pure power. Pain was not a feeling I was accustomed to and nearly made me drop the staff ending the ritualistic spell. Wincing through the pain the barrier started to blink translucient with water starting to slowly drip in. Jayce also being struck by the wild ambient mana except instead of being burnt... he absorbed the pure magic... Peculiar, but without time to debate or hypothesize I focused on his unconscious body, using him as a generator for power.

To accomplish this biblical feat of ingenuity and frankly genius mana manipulation I needed to enflame and disrupt all the unusable mana around me. Mainly that of ice, water, and the concept of cold. Making the inside of the barrier much hotter in contrast to the cold, causing disruptions of the natural flow of magic in the form of plasma bolts with intensity that could fry the ocean life for kilometers around us. purple infernos growing in intensity erupted like volcanos from my tear ducts and far outer corners of my eyes. I raised the hand not holding the staff in an open palm until the brute of a women in the water could be isolated from any ambient intent, as soon as this was done a cold rush of displeasure washed over me. Ignoring the intrusion I knew they would forgive me. Making a tightening fist with cracking knuckles. A magical skeleton hand closed gently around the now unmoving woman quickly dragging the unknown steel muscled female with her hair flowing gracefully behind her. Moving my fist to my chest the hand brought her flying into the barrier, abdomen first with her appendages behind her in tow like she was horizontally skydiving. Not having the luxury of being gentle any longer she landed directly on top of Jayce making him release a groan.

Feeling the immense magics exuding from the waters themselves I knew what that wave meant. Death. Again. Closing my still burning eyes, breathing in from my nose and taking a deep breath the flames spiked in size like meter long tails from the corners of my eye lids. Each escaped flame forming a different infinitely elaborate rune that created four, purple, two-meter rings around my barrier. With sweat beading my forehead from the strain, stress, and warmth, both arms were held out in front me extended on the center of the vertical staff I let go levitating and rotating in a half circle. As it did a half rotation an outline of a crescent moon was left in a perfect radius within the arcane scripts. I slowly moved my hands along the length of the now horizontal staff then into a triangle formation in front of my sweat slick forehead. Opening my tear-filled eyes becoming steam as quickly as they manifested from the pain.

The cloud height wave crested and began to fall showing tens of frost dragons with thousands of fishlike humanoids. Spreading my arms wide, I yelled.

"!"

Birds chirped pleasantly as they do daily in the dusk hours before retreating to their nests to nuzzle for warmth and to increase communal affection with their youths and mates. A well-traveled dirt road inlaid with wagon tracks and thousands of boot prints of differing size and tread with large trees promised protection from the elements along with any large carnivores. These avian visionaries came to realize if you stay close to these roads' humanoids would come to defend their winged overlords as the universe had intended. The last rays of colored light fought to the last to penetrate the canopy covering most of the ground. An abundance of terrestrial fauna was left unperturbed by local inhabitants to grow and spread as it pleased, so long as the roads were left unfettered. Nature had not just cohabitated with the enlightened humanoids, it flourished here, just being within this unnamed grove brought tranquility and peace. Flickering into existence a sphere of unknown origin appeared sparks of immense and pure magic were sent spiraling into the night sky bright enough to see for any nearby. The nearest shrubs and trees were immediately disintegrated, fueling the runaway mana like a newspaper on a dying flame, enough to grow brighter but only for a fraction of a second. Soon the ball of flames disappeared to reveal smoking burnt ground beneath a floating naked figure.

Fuck me. Certainly, that was the second closest to dying I have ever been. Both murderous events within the same day brought a grimace to her face. Zarlessa thought while still levitating with glowing eyes. Good news and bad news, was a two-part spell. One part was to locate your place in the geometric weave either of the world or cosmos. the second was to ride the lines of that weave to a different placement at any intersection of those lines. Good news is, I Located the three of us. Bad news is I don't know where the fuck we are on the web of the entire fucking cosmos.

Falling to her knees with the staff clattering on the dirt road in front of her, Jayce and the ogre both lightly breathing. Pulling them slowly with yelp filled yanks and more breaks then she'd like to admit, into the bush line she sat down to plot their next move and drifted off to sleep gazing at the moon.
