Sour Apple
Chapter 28

Chapter 28

Sai woke up in a good mood.

He did his normal morning routine and joined Rowana’s family for dinner.

Rowana gave him a plate, with nothing but carrots. Sai started munching on the carrots. “Need ranch dressing,” Sai muttered.

Rowana ate a strawberry and asked. “What are you planning today?”

“Figure out a way to get my phone to recharge,” Sai pulled out his smartphone. “If I can make it happen, I can use it to spread the joy of manga to the world.”

Rosa who was reading her book and then asked. “What’s manga?”

“Hmm, I won’t say comics from japan. Also I can’t say like artwork or culture since it is confusing terminology,” Sai rubbed his chin. “A storybook with pictures. They were super popular in my old world. I want to share the joy in this world too.”

Rosa perked up, “That sounds interesting. Can you let me read one of these stories?”

Rose chuckled, “Now look at what you did. Rosa loves books and now you are basically waving delicious meat to a voracious eater of books.”

“When was the last time you read a book?” Rosa said. “Your either dancing or hanging out with that narcissist bird. It would be great to have an intelligent conversation with people that share my love of books.”

Rachel then added. “What about Una? Isn’t she your friend?”

“Una is weird,” Rosa admitted.

“Tell me about it,” Rose agreed. “She lives in Book Mountain. I don’t even think she eats or leaves the place.”

“Anyway I will love to share the joy of manga with you,” Sai said. “However my smartphone is running out of battery power and if I don’t recharge it, I don’t think I can recreate the manga in this world.”

Rowana then asked. “So your smartphone is similar to an enchanted item that has a mana crystal as its source of power. Correct?”

Sai thought about it. “Well it uses a battery as the power source, however you can think of it as an enchanted item.”

Rowana nodded her head. “You can use the Repair Chest at the blacksmith to recharge the power source,” Rowana then nodded twice. “Enchanted items come in all shapes and sizes, so if it stops functioning we use the Repair Chest to fix the item.”

Sai objected. “I don’t need to fix my smartphone, I need to recharge the battery.”

Rowana shook her head, “The Repair Chest will rewind time to the early version of your smartphone. That means your battery will be recharged.”

Sai opened his mouth and closed it. “That can work. No, it can definitely work! Rowana your a genius!”

“I know,” Rowana said simply.

Sai then recalled his other task he had to do. “I should have brought it up sooner, but I need help with some other task. I want to deliver a letter to Naomi, the Fairy Godmother of the late Hero Mitton.”

Rowana nodded her head, “Well we could have a hawk deliver it to the Fairy Garden. You should ask the Fairy Queen for help.”

“Also I need to go to gather some super rare items,” Sai then thought of the list of enchanted items and Magic Orbs that Mitton told him about. “In the Southern Dukedom there is the enchanted Dimensional Mirror. In the Frostwood Forest there is a Red Mana Crystal. Finally there is a dungeon that rewards with Blessing Orbs in the Iluminacion Lake.”

“There a Dimensional Mirror in the Ruby Republic?” Rachel said.

“No, I said it is located in the Southern Dukedom,” Sai corrected.

Rosa then added. “It used to be called the Southern Dukedom twenty years ago. Now it is called the Ruby Republic after the revolution.”

Clap! Clap!

Rowana clapped her hands twice. “Alright lets focus, where did you get the information from?”

Sai gave a sad smile and showed his ring. “This is Mitton’s Soul Armament. He told me where to find these items.”

“I see...” Rowana closed her and exhaled. “What does the Dimensional Mirror exactly do?”

Stolen from its rightful place, this narrative is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

“From what I understand, it is a one way portal to anywhere you want,” Sai explained. “At least that’s how Mitton explained it to me.”

“We can retrieve the Dimensional Mirror,” Rowana said. “We just need to reach the Ruby Republic before the war begins.”

“What about the other items, the Red Mana Crystals and the Blessing Orbs Dungeon.”

Rose then asked excitedly, “How big is the Red Mana Crystal.”

Sai answered. “Bigger than a human heart.”

“Woah,” Rose said in surprise.

Sai had to agree. Mana Crystals were a type of gemstones that contained concentrated mana, but their qualities were far from uniform. A commonplace variety, the Yellow Mana Crystal, held mana at a meager rate of about .001 per mana point per pound. In contrast, the prized Blue Mana Crystal possessed the capacity to contain anywhere from .01 mana points per pound. Yet, the exceedingly rare Red Mana Crystal stood apart, capable of storing a remarkable 100 mana points per pound. Among them, the Red Mana Crystal was beyond value, a truly priceless treasure.

“We can think of it as a quest, do you want to turn it into your Soul Armament?” Rowana said.

Sai nodded his head, “Yes I do. I wanted to add an enchantment to it.”

“I see...” Rowana closed her and exhaled. “It wouldn’t even take a day to reach Frostwood. We will leave any time your ready.”

Sai raised his hand. “What about the Blessing Orbs.”

Rose laughed. “The Blessing Orbs are tempting. However, Iluminacion Lake is super dangerous. It would take months to get to the lake. If you also ignore how deep into Horned Dog territory it is.”

Rachel added, “It would take a large group to reach that lake.”

“Great, we'll have a fun trip there,” Sai said. “My priority at the moment is that I need to recharge my phone.”

“Forget about your dumb stories!” Rose said. “This is super important!”

“Never!” Sai yelled back. “I will die for my dreams!”

It was a peaceful breakfast in Rowana’s household.

----

The Blacksmith was a literal cave with a primitive forge and rusty weapons on the wall. The anvil was in the center of the cave and looked to be working conditions.

Baa. Baa. Baa.

The sheep were ever present in the Blacksmith cave.

“Looks abandoned,” Sai muttered.

Sai spotted the Repair Chest. A metal chest that seemed to have dust and grass stains on it. A large sheep was sleeping next to it.

Sai scratched his chin, “How am I going to move you.” Sai thought about manhandling the sheep. Until he had a better idea.

Bang! Bang!

Sai grabbed a hammer and started hitting the anvil.

Baa! Baa! Baa!

The sheep were startled and started to run away.

He started to move toward the Repair Chest and opened the enchanted chest. Sai got his smartphone, checked the battery charge which was at 14 percent. He placed the smartphone into the Repair Chest and closed the lid. He hoped for the best.

Ding!

The Enchanted Chest conveniently made it sound when it was done. Sai opened the chest and retrieved the smartphone.

Eagerly Sai checked the battery power and now noticed it was 15 percent.

“Yes!” Sai said with a cheer.

Sai quickly did the math that if the Repair Chest rewinds time of about a day he would need at least 30 days or more to recharge his smartphone. He would be happy with 70 percent or higher, since he didn’t know if he could get to a 100.

Sai placed the smartphone back into the Repair Chest and closed the lid.

Sai repeated the process and was able to get the smartphone to 89 percent power.

----

Sai was going to meet the Fairy Queen next to have her deliver the letter from the late hero Mitton Godmother.

“Oh good I finally found you,” Clarissa was flying toward Sai.

Sai immediately noticed the dark circle around Clarissa's eyes. “You look tired. Are you doing okay?”

“You need to make sacrifices to pursue greatness,” Clarissa said. “Can I have more Sour Apples? My experiments require a lot of material.”

Sai nodded his head, “Sour Apples.”

Three Sour Apples landed in his hand. He hands the yellow apples to Clarissa.

“Thank you. I just started and the only thing I learned is that these apples are inedible.”

Sai nodded wisely. “As much as I like to agree. These apples can be eaten. I’m a testament to their power.”

“Really?” Clarissa said not believable Sai words. “Can you not tell how awful these taste?”

“I’m fine... If you tell me where your house is, well where your spot is. I can deliver the Sour Apple to you directly.”

“No!” Clarissa yelled fiercely. “My spot is so messy! At least tell me before you visit so I have enough time to clean it up!”

“I don’t mind a little mess.”

“That’s not the issue here. It will be embarrassing! I will find you! Don’t you even think about coming to my spot!”

“Well they do say messy girls make great lovers.”

“Then I must be a terrific lover,” Clarissa said with finality.

Sai coughed. “Anyway I gotta go. I have to ask the Fairy Queen for something.”

O_O

“No way! I have a lot of work to do! I don’t wanna be scolded by the Fairy Queen!”

----

The Fairy Queen was sitting on the ground in the middle of sheeps that were covering her with fluffy wool.

“Hello Sai, do you need something?” The Fairy Queen asked.

Sai took off the Seeker Ring and placed it on top of the letter. He wanted to let Mitton’s Grandmother to have the ring.

“Can you deliver a letter and item?” Sai asked, giving the Fairy Queen a folded paper. “I want to send this to Naomi the Godmother of Mitton, the late hero that died in the Rebellion.”

“Of course we will deliver the letter,” The Fairy Queen raised her hand. A Mother Fairy that was flying in the sky took the letter and ring from Sai.

“Thank you,” Sai said sincerely.

“No problem,” The Fairy Queen chuckled. “If I can have some of your time. What’s your opinion on the Fairy Religion?”

“They are trusted,” Sai said while looking at all the evidence.

Sapphire Principality nobility and royalty were not as loved as the Fairy Religion. Sai didn’t look deeply into it, but it was probably the combined effort of the Fairy Religion and the Nobles that forced the Princess to accept a hero into her country.

“Would you sign a familiar contract with a member of the Fairy Religion?” The Fairy Queen asked.

Sai frowned and crossed his arms. “No. I don’t think so. The benefits don’t weigh out the risk.”

“Like a symphony, your brilliance shines brightest when surrounded by harmonious allies,” The Fairy Queen said.

“I will keep that in mind...”

Sai walked away. Not wanting to get involved with the Fairy Religion.
