Chapter 14: The Smart One

"You know about me??"

"I heard from Aqua… your sister?"

"Is that what she told you? Oh, I think I get it now…"

"Huh?"

Through her smile Ray could see her head was ticking.

"She wants to meet me then?"

"She's been searching for you for I don’t even know how long! Do you not know what happened to her?"

“...”

Silence again filled the cobweb covered room.

"Sorry, I-"

"-Aqua really told you nothing then?"

She locked eyes with him. Through the bleak atmosphere a smile never left her face.

“I guess… not.”

“This isn’t the best situation to chat about this though.”

“Agreed, although how did you get into this?”

“I got a very specific request for an item at my workshop. Long story short it was a trap!”

She laughed at herself.

“Oh well, not the worst thing that has happened to me.”

“Don’t people normally post a guild request for this type of thing?”

“It’s a bit late for that now… Wait, are you an adventurer?”

“Yeah, although I just joined earlier today.”

“While I appreciate the thought, you should probably get out of here. With the amount of them after me it would be a rank D… maybe C threat.”

He reached into his back pocket and pulled out his adventurer’s card.

“Ray… Adventurer rank… B?!?!”

She put her hands over her mouth.

“Sorry, I wasn’t expecting that.”

“Don’t worry about it, I would be surprised too.”

She seemed a little embarrassed.

“So your name’s Ray?”

“That’s me.”

“I heard someone in here!”

Shouts could be heard from outside.

“Looks like our time is up. Come on.”

Roxy took charge of the situation and ran to the second floor while Ray tailed behind. The bandits were now inside. She went to a window and opened it.

“You can’t be…”

“Your B rank right? You’ll be fine!”

She rummaged through her bag and took out a hook, then without hesitation, jumped out the window. As she threw the hook out her hand it was caught on the overhanging roof above. She reached out her hand while holding the rope with the other.

“You really are alike.”

He grabbed her hand and they swung to the roof on the other side of the street when the bandits broke into the room. Ray looked back and saw them shouting while they were running across the rooftops. From here they could see the whole town from above.

“It’s sunset already?”

Roxy stopped for a second and sat down facing the sunset.

“I think we’ve lost them, let’s talk.”

She patted on the roof next to her, beckoning him to sit next to her. He did.

“So Ray, what do you want to know?”

“So you know what happened to Aqua?”

“Of course I do, I was captured there when I was younger, the same as her. She must have her reasons for not telling you but we’re not actually sisters.”

“I could have guessed from the fact you're human. So you're just close friends?”

While smirking she said-

“Not quite.”

“Alright, I won’t pry then…”

“What are you to Aqua anyway?”

“Ah… a friend? You would have to ask her.”

“Did she hire you, or?”

“She asked for help. Help in finding out what happened to her. Do you know?”

“Honestly I can’t say. I’ve been trying to figure out what had happened by myself for a while… Maybe if… Maybe if we all-”

“-Bloodlust.”

“Huh?”

“Get down!”

They ducked when an arrow flew past their heads.

“That’s all I needed to hear- We have to get to cover.”

“Are you sure your rank B?”

“Well I wasn’t yesterday.”

“That’s not what I meant!”

Roxy ran to the edge of the roof and started digging through her bag.

“What are you?-”

“-We have to get down from here!”

She took out a small white crystal.

“Condensed air mana? What is that going to do?”

“Hopefully explode.”

“Huh?”

“One… Two… Three!”

Roxy pushed Ray by the back and jumped off the edge of the roof onto the street below. Her smile was showing she was having fun. It was oddly reassuring even though they were falling to their deaths.

“HYA!”
