Chapter 10. Doctor's appointment.

So yeah, I'm a safe anomaly now.

Sebastian came to my cell personally to let me know about the news. During his stay he also told me of a very interesting proposition.

“So, I talked with the 05’s and the site director. They all agreed that you may be freed to go back to your routine before your anomalous powers came to light, under two conditions.”

Sebastian held two fingers up to visually represent the conditions as he told me them.

“One. You’ll start off with limited access to the different anomalies’ containment chambers, cafeteria and other common spaces. In addition, you will have to wear a shoulder-mounted camera at all times to let the foundation document your exact location, what you’re doing and also to observe any possible activation of your powers, ergo if you were to die on-duty or on-site.”

I nodded. “That’s fair I suppose.”

Sebastian lowered one of his fingers. “The other condition is that the foundation will have full authority to schedule testing between you and other SCPs in cross-testing situations. Most importantly they will try to get to the bottom of why you so easily befriend 939 anomalies. I must admit that I'm also curious about that still, if you recall I had plans about making a designated 939 training program. Their test results may prove useful in my project.”

I nodded again. “Sounds fine to me.”

Sebastian chuckled a little. “Great! I’d assumed you’d agree. As a matter of fact, the 05’s have already scheduled a cross-testing between you and SCP-049, which I assume you’re already familiar with due to jade?”

I let out a little laugh. “You could say that.”

Sebastian closed his notebook with a little clap. “Hey... just off the record, how are you holding up?”

I was a little taken aback by his sudden change of tone but answered regardless. “I’m fine, why?”

Sebastian put a hand on my shoulder. “Just checking up on you. Just because you’re now an anomaly doesn’t mean you’re any less my friend.”

I smiled a little. “Thanks, buddy. But I mean it, I'm fine.”

Sebastian softly smiled, before retracting his hand from my shoulder. “Please tell me if you need anything. A television, some video games maybe? It must be pretty dull here in your cell.”

“Hey, Sebastian, I appreciate your concern but I'm truly all right. I just want to get back to my regular routine, the sooner the better.”

Sebastian’s smile dropped a little into a sympathetic frown. “Yeah, I get it. There is a lot of paperwork and protocols that need to be organized before that can happen, I'm afraid. Rest assured I'm working as fast as I can though, the researching department is actually behind schedule without your help.”

I smiled. “Thank you, sebastian. I really appreciate it.”

Sebastian’s smile returned. “You’re welcome. Now, unless you have anything else you feel like you need to get off your chest, I believe I'm done here.”

I shook my head softly. “No, I believe I've covered everything I wanted to ask you about. Oh wait, before you go, when is this cross-testing between 049 and I?”

Sebastian got up from his chair and checked his wrist display. “Tomorrow, 3 pm.”

I nodded. “Alright. Thank you for everything.”

Sebastian smiled before opening the door to my cell. “Have a good afternoon, Bacon.”

I smiled. “Yeah, you too.”

I spent the rest of the day just idling around in my containment chamber. Now that I was reclassified as safe, the foundation finally removed the plexiglass window into my office, which was very nice. It marked the first time in 3 days I'd been able to get some privacy.

I went to bed filled with excitement about the next day. I wonder what the foundation plan for us is, will the doctor try to cure me? Will it just be a friendly visit? I suppose I'll know for sure tomorrow.

I closed my eyes, thinking of all the good times I've had with 049 and Jade. The two seemed to go hand in hand- quite literally. Wherever 049 went, Jade followed. They’d usually hold hands as they went about.

It’ll be nice to see a familiar face, a fellow anomaly at that.

I woke up to my alarm clock beeping. I grunted and turned it off, rubbing my eyes. “Ugh...”

I lifted my torso off the bed, looking at the clock on my wall. 1 pm. That’s strange. Did I hit snooze a bazillion times? My clock usually goes off at 7 am.

Then I read the notifications on my wrist display.

SYSTEM: Hello staff. We’d like you to remember to turn your clocks back by 6 hours, as today is the annual Martian daylight saving time. Thank you for your attention.

I scoffed a little. I get this isn’t earth and everything but really, did they have to displace the clock by 6 hours? Seems... excessive.

I groggily made my way over to the coffee machine. I turned it on, only to be met with the displeasure that there were no more coffee beans left. “uuuuughhh... every time...”

I opened a drawer, tossing aside multiple empty bean bags before finally finding a half-filled bag. I dumped the entire bag into the bean slot and pressed some buttons on the machine again. It let out a buzz before slowly dispensing the caffeine filled brew into the mug.

I put a dash of milk and some sugar in the coffee before taking a sip. Mm. Good coffee.

I checked my wrist display again and noticed a notification. It was a message from Jade. I pressed the notification and took another sip of coffee.

Jade: Hey Bacon, Seb told me about what’s going on. Is everything... okay?

I frowned a little before typing a reply.

Bacon: Hey Jade. Yeah, everything’s right as rain here. Did you hear that I’m cross-testing with our avian friend today?

Jade: No... I was unaware of this. Thank you for telling me, I had some dinner plans for us, I guess I can cancel them.

I snickered a little.

Bacon: You guys eat dinner all the time, don’t you?

There was no reply.

I closed out of the messaging app and sipped my coffee again. Did I mention this is good coffee?

“Hello again, Bacon. It's been... quite a while since I saw you.”

I was now in 049’s containment cell, talking to the plague doctor. “Yeah, things got kind of complicated when it was revealed that I’m kind of immortal.”

049’s eyes widened with intrigue. “Oh? How so?”

The plague doctor touched my face with his gloved hands. “I don’t see any physical malformations... How does this... power of yours work?”

I removed the doctor’s hands from my face. “Well, I just sort of, don’t die when I should.”

049 seemed very intrigued by my words. “May I test this firsthand? I feel it is important to ask you for permission even if you have the ability to survive anything. I am effectively terminating you, after all.”

I nodded. “Yeah sure, no worries.”

049 removed one of his gloves and held his hand in front of my neck. “Okay. See you soon, I suppose.”

As soon as the doctor’s intimate fingers touched my skin, my vision went black.

The weird thing was that this time, there was no vibrant flashing in my dreaming. There was just a solid wall of darkness, as if I was just sleeping... without dreaming.

It didn’t last for long though. Maybe a minute or two later, I could see the real world again. I was looking straight up at the ceiling, and I guess I must’ve fallen as soon as I died.

049 stood above me, looking down at my body. “Most intriguing indeed.”

He had put his glove back on again and offered me his hand. “Need a hand?”

I took it, letting myself be lifted off the floor by the doctor. “Thank you.”

049 looked at me up and down from head to toe. “You’re a most peculiar subject indeed. I’d be very upset if the pestilence got its hold on you, your particular case seems... most difficult to cure.”

I touched my neck in the same spot 049 just had done. “I guess you could say so...”

After giving him verbal consent, I allowed the doctor to... experiment with my body a little. He basically gave me a full-body frisking, going over what felt like every fiber of my body. He concluded with the same results the foundation had come to before, that there were no physical abnormalities present.

I even let him dismember me to prove my point, and he watched in awe as my exposed arm wound slowly grew from what looked like a baby arm into a fully-fledged adult-sized arm again.

“Most intriguing indeed.” As soon as the doctor felt satisfied with his inspection, he waved to the researchers on the other side of the glass window. “This meeting has been most educational, Friend. I hope we can meet again sometime soon, and judging by how close you are to my head researcher Jadeitor, I'd say that day is not far from today.”

I shook 049’s gloved hand and smiled. “Indeed, it’s been a pleasure. I’ll see you around.”

The door to 049’s containment chamber opened, and two guards and a researcher stepped inside the room. The guards aimed their guns at me and 049 respectively. The doctor seemed unfazed and continued sorting his equipment into his satchel again while I raised my hands in defense.

“Please step out of the containment cell, Bacon.” The researcher said.

I did as they told me, and the two guards and the researcher all stepped outside right behind me.

“Guards, escort this one back to its containment cell.”

The guards handcuffed me, and we began walking. As my chamber was in the same wing as 049’s, it didn’t take long for us to reach my office again. The guards unlocked the door, and I stepped inside my room again.

That was an eventful two hours indeed.
