Mira panicked, scrambling to her feet as the water poured into the cave, filling it rapidly. "We need to get out! Now!" she shouted.
"Over here!" Sophia called, pointing to a narrow ledge that jutted out of the cave wall. "We can climb up!"
"Get Kintz!" Victor yelled, struggling to keep the man from panicking as the water rose.
Mira and Lila immediately dragged Kintz, hauling him upwards onto the ledge. "You better not drown us!" Mira exclaimed to Kintz in agony as he struggled wildly.
In a few tugs, they got him on the ledge as the water rose just higher. Right behind them came Lila and Victor, who braced themselves on the surface of the rock face to face, their feet wide apart.
"Is anyone above?" Sophia asked, looking at them all. "We need to be above the water."
Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon.
"Yeah, but we don't have much time!" exclaimed Lila, her eyes wide with terror. "The tunnel can cave in anytime."
Mira desperately looked around for some other opening. "There must be another exit from here somewhere!"
Then, a slight glimmer seemed to flash from the distance. "There!" exclaimed Mira, pointing. "There seems to be another passage that way!"
Sophia nodded, as she led the way toward the light as the water continued to rise. "Move! We have to hurry!"
As they were running towards the light, Kintz looked at them threateningly. "You are all fools if you think you can escape this storm. It is a sign of what is to come."
With his words, Mira felt a wave of anger well up inside of her, which she pushed away. "We aren't going to let you win," she said, her voice defiant. "We'll fight until the end."
They came upon the new tunnel entrance; with every step they took in its direction, the light grew stronger. In a second, they were inside of it when another explosion shook the cave and sent tremors along the floor.
The ceiling began to cave in, with the tumbled rocks falling in their direction. "Run!" exclaimed Sophia in a high-pitched urgent voice. They sprinted through the tunnel as the water crashed behind them, the cave well on its way to completely collapsing.
