Chapter 15: Into the Fire

The cabin had shaken under Mira's feet as the explosion echoed outside. Her heart was racing, but her mind was suddenly clear. "We need to get Kintz out of here!" she shouted, knowing they couldn't leave him behind.

"No time!" Sophia yelled, her voice cutting through the chaos. "We need to move now!"

Victor grabbed Kintz and pulled him to the back of the cabin as Lila reached for her device and other apparatus. Mira followed them directly, peering out the window at a number of armed men approaching the cabin - outlined against the fire.

"Where do we go?" Mira asked, her heart racing.

"There's a tunnel leading from here out to the back of the property," Sophia said, this time an air of urgency palpable in her voice. "But we must hurry. They will break the door any moment."

Scrambling through the cabin, Mira could hear the shouting intruders, stamping feet nearing. "We mustn't let them catch us!" she urged.

They made it just in time to the entrance of the tunnel, as the front door was burst open. In came armed men, guns drawn. "Over here!" Sophia yelled, her hand gesturing for everyone to take a plunge into the tunnel.

Crawling through the dark passage with gunfire echoing behind them, Mira's heart was racing as she pushed forward in desperation for their escape. "We have to keep moving!" she urged, turning back to Kintz, who was struggling against the grip of Victor. The tunnel opened onto an exit that led into dense woods outside. "This way!" Sophia directed them deeper into the forest. They stopped and caught their breath in a clearing, the sounds of gunfire growing distant. "What now?" Lila asked, panting, her head jerking this way and that, scanning for any sign of attack.

"We need to find another way onto that facility," Sophia replied, her eyes scanning the treeline. "But first, we have to regroup, reassess the plan."

Mira nodded, her racing heart close to catching up. "If we just can make it to that facility, we stand a chance at being able to stop the manipulation of the weather."

Kintz, who was bound behind his back, glared at them. "You're just wasting your time. You can't stop what's already in motion."

"Shut up, Kintz," Victor snapped, his grip tight on the man. "You're going to go along with us, one way or another."

Just as they did with the hope of their movement, the skies suddenly showed their boomers above them. "What now?" Mira huffed, her stomach churning with fear. Then out of nowhere, a bolt of lightning struck a nearby tree, splintering it to fall to the ground almost to where they stood.
