Chapter 8

Chapter 8

Rain poured on Polly as she patrolled on a rooftop. She ignored it. She didn't mind the rain. She laughed a little to herself as she thought of Filbert making a fuss about her needing to head back home now. She probably would do that soon. She had been patrolling for a couple of hours and nothing seemed to be wrong. She also knew her Mom was probably helping him cook something delicious right now. But she wanted to patrol just a little bit more.

She looked around through her binoculars to see if she could find anything. At first, it seemed to be just like the last couple of hours had been. Nothing.

Then she heard a scream. The blonde turned in the direction of the scream and saw Daphne in an alley. Three guys were there. Two with bats and one with a big knife.

"Get away from me!" Daphne yelled.

"Come on, baby, don't be like that," The guy with the knife said. He held it to her neck. "I'll make this real simple. Just hand over that wallet of yours and knows one has to get hurt. Deal?"

"No deal!" Daphne growled. "You're not getting a penny from me! You want money? Get a job!"

The guy then grabbed her neck. Daphne choked as she put her hands on his arm, trying to get him off.

"Not so smart are we?" The guy asked. "Here I was trying to be all nice and then you gotta go and say stuff like that. You oughta be ashamed of yourself."

Polly's voice was then heard, "Let her go."

The men looked around. The two other guys had their bats ready but they didn't see anyone.

"Who's there?!" The guy with the knife demanded. "Show yourself or the bitch get gutted!" He then jumped when a bullet was shot near his feet, releasing Daphne and giving her time to get away from him.

One of the other guys then saw a silhouette in the darkness. "I see her!" He ran at the silhouette and swung his back.

He didn't hit anything. The guy was confused. "Huh?" He then made muffled noises as his mouth was grabbed and he was pulled into the darkness.

The other bat guy ran towards it but Polly jumped out at him. She tackled him down to the ground and knocked him out with a couple of punches.

The guy with the knife started to shake when he saw who it was. "It-It's you!" He held his knife up to her, his hand shaking as he did so. "S-Stay back!"

Polly didn't say a word. She just walked towards him. He started to back up until he couldn't anymore. He had hit the wall. Polly was now face to face with him. He tried to stab her but she grabbed his arm and twisted it.

The knife fell from his hand and Polly knocked him out with a single punch.

Daphne looked at the now downed man. Polly turned to her.

"It's okay," Polly said. "You're safe now."

"J-Just get away from me!" Daphne demanded. Tears were going down as she had a mixture of anger and sadness on her face. She began to walk away. Polly looked at the men that were down in the alley.

Daphne walked for a bit as she just sobbed to herself. If Matteo had been there, he'd have been able to protect her.

"How is he?" Polly asked from behind Daphne, cussing the other woman to jump.

Daphne turned to Polly. "He-He's fine..." Polly did just save her from being mugged so she wouldn't give her a hard time. "He's going to be out soon."

Polly felt relieved when she heard that. "That's good. I'm glad he'll be home with you soon. I can tell how much you miss him."

"You think?" Daphne wiped the tears from her face. "God, I'm a mess."

"It's okay to have feelings," Polly told her. "No need to hold them back."

"I-I just...what if whatever or whoever attacked him does it again?" Daphne asked. "He was seriously hurt, Polly."

"I won't let that happen to him again," Polly said. "If it's okay with you, I'd like to ask him about what he saw again."

Daphne just looked at her in disbelief. "I...really don't get you."

"What do you mean?" Polly asked.

"After the way Matteo and I have treated you, why would you want to help us?" Daphne asked.

"Because that's who I am," Polly said. "I like helping people. We may not have had the best relationship, but Matteo didn't deserve what happened to him."

If you spot this tale on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

Daphne couldn't believe it. This woman that she and her boyfriend had treated so badly was willing to help them. That's all she has ever been trying to do. Back in Matteo's hospital room, at the park, and now. Daphne started to feel guilt for the way she treated the masked woman.

"Polly...I'm sorry," Daphne said. "I'm sorry for the way I treated you back at the hospital, at the park, and the whole time I've known you." She looked down. "All you've ever done was try and help and I gave you shit for it."

After a few moments, she felt a hand on her shoulder. Daphne looked up to see Polly unmasked smiling at her.

"It's okay, Daphne," Polly said. "I forgive you. Just promise me one thing"

Daphne wiped her tears again. "What's that?"

"That you won't judge other people based on their appearances anymore," Polly replied. "It's who they are as a person that counts."

Daphne couldn't help but stare at Polly's scar for a few seconds. Now that the hatred she had for her was gone, Daphne was thinking about how she couldn't imagine what Polly had to go through besides her and Matteo. God, she had been such a bitch.

She nodded at Polly. "You got it. You know....you got a really nice smile, Polly. I can't believe I never noticed it before."

Polly blinked in surprise at this but soon smiled again. "Thank you, Daphne." Her mom always told her she had a great smile but she never expected someone like Daphne to say it.

The blonde would she surprised again when she saw that Daphne was smiling back at her. "You're welcome, Polly."

The two of them stood in the rain, not sure what to say next. They had obviously never had a talk like this before. After a few more moments, Daphne spoke again.

"You um, don't have an umbrella," Daphne said.

"Don't worry," Polly said. "I'm fine." She put her mask on again. "I'm gonna head home anyway. Stay safe, Daphne."

Polly then turned and went on her way. Daphne watched as she went, standing there with her umbrella above her.

NNN

Dolly looked outside the window at the rain as she sipped her cup of hot chocolate. It was pouring out. She had just finished getting off the phone with Jasper. Everything was going smoothly on his end just as it was supposed to. Knowing this, Dolly was able to give a relaxed sigh.

The artist enjoyed rainy days. Watching it pour from her window, relaxing on a cover as she watched TV and enjoyed a snack or a meal, or even when she was making art. Some of Dolly's favorite pieces came from inspiration she got on rainy days. She was even getting some right now. She thought of making a painting of some of her pumpkin monsters walking in the rain. Where would they be going? Dolly had an idea and it made her chuckle.

She soon heard a knock at the door. Having no problem figuring out who it was, Dolly smiled and stopped Rylan from getting the door.

"I'll get it," Dolly told him. She went and answered the door. Polly was there. "What are you doing out in the pouring rain?" She asked with a laugh.

Polly took her mask off and smiled at her friend. "I wanted to see you."

Dolly smiled back at her. "Come on in. You're just in time for hot chocolate." She moves so Polly could enter.

Polly walked inside and waved at Rylan. Fred sees Polly come in and looks at Dolly who nods at him. He heads back into the kitchen and soon comes out with a hot chocolate for Polly.

Polly grabbed it. "Thank you." She took a sip and her eyes widened a bit.

Dolly looked concerned. "Something wrong?"

Polly looked up at her. "This might be the best hot chocolate I've ever had."

"Oh," Dolly laughed. "Had me going for a second there. Come on, let's sit down."

The two of them went to sit down on the couch. Dolly grabbed the remote and put the TV on.

"So how's your day been?" The artist asked.

"It's been good so far," Polly said, "I was on patrol for a few hours and not much crime was happening. I did stop Daphne from getting mugged though."

Dolly was silent for a second after hearing that. "How'd that go?"

Polly smiled at the artist. "I'd say well. No one got hurt, well except the mugger, and me and Daphne actually managed to have a nice talk."

Dolly was now confused. A nice talk. With Daphne? The rude bitch who blamed Polly for her stupid boyfriend's problems. Dolly couldn't put her head around any kind of civil conversation being had with her let alone a nice one.

"She's still really upset about Matteo of course," Polly said. "But I was able to get her to calm down. I let her know that she wouldn't have to worry about anything else happening to him."

Dolly had to stop her mouth from hanging open. She couldn't believe it. Polly was actually going to help help these people. These people who've done nothing but treat her like crap. The artist just couldn't wrap her head around it.

"Anything else happen?" Dolly asked.

"She said she would give me the chance to talk to Matteo," Polly said. "When I get a better idea of what attacked him it should be easier to find."

Dolly wanted to throw up. Even if she wasn't the one who sent Ethan to attack Matteo, she pictured herself going out of her way to help these people like Polly was doing. It made her sick. She wanted to talk some sense into Polly, tell her that she was the one who sent Ethan after the bastard but she wouldn't understand. Not now. So she had to play along until she could get her to.

"Well I'm glad to hear you've made progress with her," Dolly offered a smile.

Polly smiled back at her. "Yeah. I'm so happy to see how well you're taking this."

Dolly looked at her. "Why wouldn't I take it well?"

"Well, I know we already talked about it but I was a little worried that after what happened at the Halloween party you would be... hesitate about me wanting to help them," Polly said.

"Polly... I'll support you no matter what," Dolly said. "That's what friends do." She placed her hand on Polly's. "....I know me and Daphne started off on the wrong foot but if you could make things good with her then there's no reason I can, right?"

"Right," Polly agreed.

"You've helped me come out of my shell, let me meet your cousin and your friends, and made me more comfortable with talking to people that aren't ones I drew," Dolly continued. "For that, I'll always be grateful for you and that you're my friend. My best friend."

Polly's smile got warmer as she heard that. "You're my best friend too, Dolly."

The two of them just sat there, smiling and looking into each other's eyes. After what seemed like forever, Dolly looked down and noticed that her hand was still on Polly's and quickly took it away.

The artist's face was red. "Sorry about that."

Polly's face was also red. "It's okay..." Her heart was pounding as she turned away. Within moments, the talk she had with her mom came to her mind. After some contemplation, she turned back to her friends. "Dolly..."

Dolly, who had also been facing away, looked at her. "Yes?"

A smile came onto Polly's face once again as she asked a question that would cause her friend's eyes to go wide. "...Do you want to go on a date with me?"

Dolly didn't respond. She just gave a frozen stare at Polly for a few moments. Did she just ask her out?

Polly had a look of concern. "Dolly?" She was hoping she didn't freak her out.

Dolly knew exactly what she wanted to say but the shock made her struggle to get it out. "I..." She gave Polly a soft smile as she shakily grabbed the blonde's hand. "...I'd love to go on a date with you."

Before Polly could even respond, she found herself being pulled into a hug by Dolly. She hugged Dolly back. They held each other tightly before breaking the hug.

"I'm...really glad you said yes," Polly smiled. "I was worried that you might be uncomfortable. I thought for a second that's what I made you."

"Are you kidding?" Dolly hugged Polly again. "I'm at my most comfortable when I'm around you. But...maybe let's not go to a restaurant."

"Well did you want to go see a movie?" Polly asked.

"Actually, I think I have a much better idea," Dolly said. "What better way to do a first date than a nice, romantic picnic under the stars?"

Polly couldn't believe that she hadn't thought of that herself. "That's perfect! I'm sure Filbert wouldn't mind making some stuff."

Dolly giggled. "It's not like we need anything fancy. It'll be perfect no matter what we eat."

"I agree," Polly said, giggling as well. She let out a yawn.

Dolly blinked with a blank expression on her face. "Am I boring you?"

"What? No! Of course not!" Polly said quickly.

Dolly laughed. "I'm just messing with you. You're obviously just a little tired."

"Yeah, I guess I am," Polly said, rubbing the back of her head. "I admittedly didn't get much sleep last night."

"Well, there's no way I'm letting you walk home when it's pouring outside," Dolly said, crossing her arms. "I'm not having Rylan give you a ride either. You can sleep here."

Polly gave Dolly a look of appreciation before letting out another yawn. Her eyes started to close and her head ended up on Dolly's shoulder.

Dolly blushed once again. She was going to have Polly sleep in one of the available rooms but she didn't have a problem with this either. She knew what she was going to paint next.

She noticed that she had gotten a text on her phone and picked it up. Jasper. He sent a text saying that things were going well on his end and he asked how things were going.

Dolly looked down at Polly on her shoulder again and sent a text back to have.

I've got a date.
