“Hmm, yaz, mediocre but it will zuffice.” Gizmo inspected the tuna sub from all angles.
“Dis vill do! You ‘ave proven yourzelf to be more than a zkrap of garbage from the curb.”
Interesting indeed! So, to pass a cooking test, I need to create at least a regular version.
“‘Ere, take dis az a zign of acknowledgement.”
[Quest Complete]
Congratulations, you have completed the quest ‘Way of the Cook’.
You have been rewarded with 50 EXP.
You have been awarded ‘Cook’s Cleaver’.
Woah, awesome. I unsheathed the cleaver and inspected it.
Cook’s Cleaver (Rare) (Exclusive)
DMG: 5, Hardiness: 10, Durability: 21
Cooking skill +1
It had an attack of 5! Which was four higher than my useless ornamental sword, and it actually had decent hardiness and durability scores.
Gizmo was greasying me.
“Err yes?”
“You ‘ave proven yourzelf vorthy! I need you to bring me the recipe for the ‘Royal Crème Brûlée’. Do dis, and you vill be revaarded!”
The author's tale has been misappropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon.
He then spun me round by the shoulder and kicked me out the door.
“Go now!”
Jeebus, settle down!
That was one spicy NPC, I would not want to be working for that guy in real life, that would be a nightmare.
“Welcome to the Green Grocer!”
*ching*
The three crude sushi sold for 125 each, three flawed for 250 each, and the normie sold for 500, which brought the total earnings to $1,625 Aurem, taking my total to $78,557. Only 1,443 to go…
I hadn’t really considered the limit of stock, which wasn’t a native feature of IFO. The hard limit ingredient was ‘Rice Grain’, meaning I could only realistically make 32 more, if they’re all regulars I’ll make just enough to cover the bail out, but if a couple come out as flawed or crude, then I’m stuffed.
There was one more problem, economically it didn’t make sense to buy the tuna ingredient, which only left one thing… and it involved me, a fish and my shiny new friend.
“Hahahaha!”
“Take that! And this!”
A circus carnival of tuna flew around the kitchen. Chucks of fat and guts stuck to the ceiling and the walls.
“Wow… it’s working.”
Half an hour later and a string of luck, and the first nine sushi came out better than fine.
Sometime later… And I had one flawed one, and the rest were normies! Two failed, but what of it? It wasn’t clear if it was just good luck, or due to the recent skill increases but it couldn’t have come at a better time.
Now I just needed to sell them… Oh, the market was closed now, so I won’t be able to sell the subs back to the Grocer until tomorrow, but if I leave it until tomorrow, dammit, I’ll have to pay another Barracks day pass, which was 2,000 Aurem, minimum.
The innkeeper magicked a bowl of fish broth for an NPC customer, “Enjoy!”
“Thanks Kalm!” the patron replied.
The cat-girl’s name is Kalm? Why didn’t I pick that up earlier? Must have been distracted.
Then it dawned on me, the answer was right there.
Of course, if the innkeeper sold food, she probably also bought food.
I made my way over to her and brought up the trade menu.

She accepted the lot and netted me a whopping $15,488 Aurem.
I’m surprised she even has 15k on her. but why did she offer more per item than the Green Grocer? Either way it brought my grand total to… of 92k-ish.
There was only one thing left to do, bail out Catherine.
I went to leave but the inn door open before I had a chance to grab at it.
“Having fun?” a familiar deep slow voice asked. His giant frame barely squeezing through the doorway, Torovir and the twins following close behind as well as another traitor, the muscle bound freak -Brutus.
“Oh ahh…” Shit, what was his name again? “Lord-mayor! How nice to see you, again.”
“Is it now?”
“Yeah, yeah of course. What bring you to these parts of the woods?”
He grimaced, at least that’s what I thought he did, but his face was so leathery it was hard to tell. “Is that some Earthen expression? Actually, don’t answer that. Your progress?”
I looked to the door behind him and fidgeted. I really need to get to Catherine…
“Umm, look, I’m still investigating, it’s going to take more time.”
“Have somewhere you need to be?” he asked with a smirk.
Does he know about Catherine? Surely not. I don’t know how he is spying on me, but it can’t be omnisciently.
“Umm, yeah I wanted to check in on my friend, umm, the Fishermen’s Friend.” Mental face palm.
“So, it is. On your way then.”
The Barracks was just down the main street from the Frog’s Pond, and it took no time at all to come before its gate. Chequered steel barred the gateway to the Barracks. What’s going on? A guard stood lazily on the other side.
“Why is the portcullis down?!”
He looked over with disinterest, “The Pirate’s guild is closed, please come back tomorrow.”
“What? Why? I need to bail out—” My friend? Classmate? Fellow refugee? “—Catherine.”
He didn’t care, he wasn’t programmed to care, all he did was repeat himself. “The Pirate’s guild is closed, please come back tomorrow.”
Goddamn, did that old codger know? What is a codger anyways? Urgh, Catherine is not going to be happy…
Matilda turned to me, along with the rest of the mercenaries following.
Matilda – Trainee Macer is requesting upkeep [1,000g].
“You have got to be joking...” I looked over their faces. Can’t afford them all…
