Ronald the Runeless
Chapter 5 - First Victory

Chapter 5 - First Victory

When the sun reached its highest point in the sky, Ronald arrived at the cave where the vampires resided.

The cave entrance was littered with bones, some from wild animals and some human.

Ronald picked up a rib bone covered in bite marks, which made him frown involuntarily. According to his research, vampires did not have the habit of gnawing on bones...

After thinking about it briefly, Ronald abandoned the idea of blindly entering the cave. He decided to lure the snakes out instead.

His gaze swept over the hunter who had led the way, and a struggle flashed in Ronald's eyes...

"Sir... Can I go back now?"

Perhaps noticing the murderous intent in Ronald's eyes, the hunter trembled like a sieve.

Ronald recalled the bitch Anna and her betrayal. The phrase "I will wrong the world, but the world shall not wrong me" flashed through his mind.

However, in the end, Ronald did not choose to sacrifice the hunter.

If the one standing behind him now was Anna, who had stolen all his possessions, Ronald could be as cold as midwinter. But if it was a stranger, Ronald could not yet be so cold-blooded and merciless.

"Leave a bowl of your blood and you can go back."

Hearing this, the hunter breathed a sigh of relief. After cutting his wrist and filling a bowl with blood, he hurriedly ran down the mountain, as if afraid Ronald would call him back.

Buzz~

After putting on several layers of protective spells, Ronald picked up the bait and entered the cold, deep cave.

The cave floor was very damp. Stepping on it felt like stepping in mud, bringing up a large patch of muck, as well as making loud squelching sounds.

Along the way, Ronald set up several traps that he had temporarily learned from the hunter. Although they could not kill vampires, they could at least slow the enemy down.

The cave was very quiet, with even the slightest sound infinitely amplified. The unmasked footsteps soon disturbed the monsters deep in the cave. Before long, the sound of creatures running could be heard from below.

After placing the bait, Ronald retreated to the corner near the cave entrance, which was the best ambush point. It allowed him to attack with full force while also quickly retreating outside.

The vampires smelled the unique scent of blood and let out shrill cries. From the undulating tones, Ronald sensed joyful emotions.

These beasts were celebrating that they could eat their fill again.

Sweat slid down his forehead and nose, flowing into his mouth, tasting a little salty.

Having lived a comfortable life for decades, being suddenly forced to pick up a sword and fight monsters from movies... It would be false to say he wasn't nervous.

But no matter how afraid, when things come to you, you have to pick up the sword and charge forward.

Taking a deep breath, Ronald stepped out of the corner and stood motionless, gazing at the abyssal cave entrance in the distance.

Ever since the betrayal, it was as if an invisible hand had been constantly pushing Ronald forward, not giving him the slightest chance to catch his breath.

If only he was given a little more time, he could have accumulated more power. Then no conspiracy or vampire would be able to crush him...

The shrill screams interrupted Ronald's wandering thoughts. The white, hideous monster rushing at the front was suddenly tripped by a rope and fell to the ground.

The fall was miserable, with several of its shark-like triangular teeth shattering.

Taking advantage of it falling to the ground, Ronald finally got a clear look at the true appearance of the vampires.

Unlike movie vampires who still retained some human features, the vampires of this medieval world were pure monsters.

Apart from their size, these creatures had almost no human characteristics.

The vampires' bodies were snow white and hairless. A viscous fluid was constantly secreted from them. Their facial features resembled those of an ogre, with a pair of eyes that exuded innate violence and brutality. When they roared and exposed their mouths, the corners could split back to their ears. Ronald couldn't help but think that if bitten by one, an entire arm would probably be torn off.

Despite all his practice, his first spell still failed when it came time to cast it for real. By the time the vampires had finished scrambling over each other to get to the bait like acrobats, Ronald barely managed to unleash his first spell.

Fireball, modified.

The blue-white fireball shot into the group of monsters. It was like a red-hot knife cutting tofu, emitting a sizzling roar. The blue-white fireball passed through their limbs and smashed into the ground, bringing up a storm of rubble and flames.

The violent shockwave, wrapped in raging flames, thundered to the exit. Ronald hurriedly dodged, but was still a beat too slow. Half his body was set alight.

His ears buzzing, Ronald struggled up from the ground. He paid no attention to the burning cloak and immediately looked towards the blast area.

The oxygen in the air was quickly depleted, and soon only sporadic sparks remained around the flickering flames. Using the trembling firelight, Ronald located the vampires.

Of the seven vampires that had charged up, five were now split into charred fragments. The other two had survived by virtue of being at the back, but seeing their injuries, Ronald felt that dying at the center of the blast might have been a blessing.

The two surviving vampires could no longer move. Half their bodies had turned into brittle charcoal that would crumble with a poke. After collecting proof of his kills, Ronald simply used his hunting knife to end the monsters' lives.

The tremendous power of the modified fireball gave Ronald confidence. Instead of leaving immediately, he boldly ventured further down alone, following the direction the vampires had come from.

Ronald dared to go down alone because he had something to rely on. Aside from the fireball spell, he had also accidentally derived another use for the "Gale Blast" spell.

He had only intended to clear the cave's smoke and dust, but attaching a wisp of mental power to the gust of wind produced an unexpected discovery - combining the two could generate a scanning and positioning effect!

The original Gale Blast spell was only meant to repel enemies, but attaching a small amount of mental power enabled it to detect enemies in advance!

By releasing a mentally-empowered Gale Blast into the depths of the cave, the spellcaster could survey the terrain ahead and scan for any lurking ambushes.

This spell was simply tailor made for complex environments.

With it, Ronald felt as if he had a wallhack, and combined with the tremendously powerful modified fireball, his confidence soared.

Ronald had even come up with a new name for this spell - "Wind Wave Positioning".

This spell looked simple, just requiring the addition of mental power to the gust. But actually using it was extremely complex.

To be precise, the runic structure of the "Wind Wave Positioning" spell had completely and utterly deviated from the original spell.

And if someone could see the magical runes Ronald had condensed in his mental realm, they would find that the magical circuits of this rune were now completely different from the original.

This was no longer just modification, but creation.

Continuing down the muddy mine tunnel, after about ten minutes Ronald arrived at a circular underground cavern.

This was clearly the nest of the vampires from before. In addition to feces scattered about, there were prey that had not been completely devoured.

Ronald now understood why there were bite marks on the bones outside. In the pile of bones deep inside the cave, he found the answer.

These vampires had even bred offspring!

That explained why the vampires would frequently attack the town, and why there were bite marks on the bones outside.

Unlike adult vampires who only needed blood, these beasts were notoriously gluttonous. They would lick every last shred of meat from the bones!

They would even turn the vessels that birthed them into food.

In the corner, Ronald saw one such vessel - an eighteen or nineteen year old girl who had been eaten halfway, with all her ample body parts turned into bloody cavities...
