Chapter 18 - Awakening

Chapter 18 - Awakening

The demon-slaying arrow in the opponent's hand was a weapon that could truly kill Ronald.

Facing a weapon specially designed to counter mages, Ronald didn't dare let his guard down for even a moment, because any lapse in concentration would mean death.

Ronald could not allow such a threat to exist, so the best method was to completely eliminate the opponent.

The elemental affinity physique was not just limited to easier spellcasting. It also meant that Ronald's absolute control over the elements was superior.

The attack that the assassin thought was unavoidable was not only dodged by Ronald's early anticipation, but the blue-white fireball in his hand also did not lose control...

This stunned the shooter hiding in the shadows. In her many years of completing missions, she had encountered many mages and killed many formal mages, but she had never met a mage like this before. He was still just an apprentice, yet he possessed near-instant spellcasting abilities, and his control over magic was also horrifying. He could even spare the concentration to maintain a spell that should have certainly lost control.

This was unimaginable!

Dividing one's attention in combat was a preposterous thing to do. The shooter paid the price for it as Ronald's lips quickly buzzed, pretending to cast a spell but actually controlling the silent silver dart to pass through the white mist.

The dart was small, so when it passed through the white mist, the mist did not disperse at all, and so the shooter did not notice it.

By the time Ronald discovered the opponent's position and the dart began accelerating towards him, the distance between them was less than ten meters.

It felt as if her heart was being gripped tightly!

Something was coming over!

Austin raised her wrist, preparing to block.

She wore an elven wind element magical device on her hand that could release a wind shield to defend its owner in times of crisis.

Cyan elemental energy gathered, and in the blink of an eye a huge shield made of wind elements appeared in front of Austin.

Austin gripped the handles behind the huge shield with both hands, ready to meet the impact.

The silver light enlarged in her eyes, it was a dart.

The wind elemental shield was sturdy. This sneak attack did not seem dangerous.

Just as she was feeling relieved the second before, in the next second Austin's expression turned to one of horror.

She saw the flying sword curved like a fish, bypassing the huge shield from Austin's left temple and piercing through, then exiting from her right temple with blood and brain matter.

In the eyes of the men in black who were ambushing together, the silver light swept past in a flash, Austin's body stiffened, then fell straight down.

Seeing this, the leader of the men in black screamed at Ronald as if he had just lost his parents.

"Bastard, I'm going to kill you!"

As soon as the words left his mouth,

Whoosh!

More than ten wind blades suddenly swept forth.

The curses were stuffed back into his mouth as the leader of the black-clothed men leapt vigorously towards the roadside. In midair he desperately curled up to minimize his surface area.

His reaction speed was already considered fast, but the attack range formed by the wind blades was simply too large. After landing, he was still missing a leg.

His companions behind him fared even worse, having just stood up, they were now scattered about in pieces on the ground.

However, even with such fatal injuries, these people did not die. They writhed on the ground, picking up their severed limbs and piecing themselves back together one by one.

Ronald's attack seemed to have provoked the ferocity of the men in black. They charged at Ronald en masse, no longer bothering to dodge Ronald's attacking spells. It was clear they intended to engage Ronald in melee combat relying on their undying bodies.

But were undying bodies truly a thing in this world?

Ronald did not know. The only thing he knew for sure was that even if undying bodies existed, they would not appear on these mob characters.

"Apprentice Spell - Quagmire."

The ground swiftly softened. Apart from the leader of the men in black, the rest whose limbs were not yet fully reattached sank into the mud pits.

The men in black struggled violently, trying to break free of the restraints, but there was an ironclad rule to quagmires - the more you struggled, the faster you sank.

After the mud had submerged past their knees, Ronald's follow up attacks came in quick succession.

"Apprentice Spell - Harden Quagmire."

"Apprentice Spell - Fire Curtain."

The two spells flowed together seamlessly. The men in black did not even have time to react before flames shot towards the sky. The men in black, who were chopped into human sticks by the wind blades without so much as an 'ouch', now let out shrill screams. Their flesh and blood rapidly carbonized under the terrifying high temperatures...

When the fire curtain dissipated, the men in black who were fixed in the mud pits had become motionless skeletal frames.

Witnessing all this, the eyes of the leader of the men in black were bloodshot. He stared fiercely at Ronald with green glowing eyes, roaring hoarsely.

"I will definitely kill you! I must kill you!!"

As soon as the words left his mouth, a boulder cannonball stuffed itself into the mouth of the leader of the men in black.

His entire oral cavity was shattered, exposing the mutilated tooth sockets within, and strips of meat dripping with blood hung from his broken jaw like whiskers on his chest.

Such an injury was trivial to the leader of the men in black. He pushed his jaw and the wound quickly healed seven-tenths of the way with writhing flesh buds in a few seconds.

But by the time his injury had healed, Ronald's next set of spells was already prepared.

"Light Spell."

Dazzling white light abruptly exploded before the eyes of the leader of the men in black.

Caught unprepared, the leader of the men in black's vision went completely white. He roared and slashed blindly with his blade.

People who have played FPS games know that when an enemy gets flashed, you have to immediately rush them. Naturally, Ronald would not miss this opportunity. The moment the leader of the men in black lost his vision, Ronald began moving his mind.

Over a dozen blue-white fireballs appeared in front of Ronald's palm.

The terrifying high temperatures caused varying degrees of withering in the nearby vegetation. The intense elemental fluctuations even cleared away the lingering white mist in the surroundings.

Sensing the danger, instinct drove the leader of the men in black to flee outward, but how could a human be faster than magic? The blue-white fireballs quickly caught up to him, followed by a series of thunderously loud explosions.

When the explosive shockwaves subsided, Ronald stood up from behind the earthen mound.

A thick, nauseating smell of charring mixed with a strange meaty aroma lingered in the air.

Ronald strongly resisted the urge to dispel the strange smell with magic, covering his nose as he began to survey the battlefield.

The modified Fireball Spell was the strongest spell Ronald could wield. Over ten clustered together, one could imagine the might.

The epicenter of the explosions directly blasted out a crater over three meters deep.

After searching around for a while, Ronald could only find a twisted blade fragment, which was the weapon previously held by the leader of the men in black.

There was nothing worth looking at with the skeletal frames in the mud pits either, so Ronald went straight to the corpse of the shooter.

Lifting her headscarf, he was surprised to find that the shooter was actually quite a beautiful woman.

The ghastly wounds on both sides of her head could not obscure her beauty. Lying quietly on the ground, she was just like the sleeping princesses from fairy tales.

A woman like this could easily have a horde of pursuers capable of filling up a small organization in his previous world. She could have effortlessly lived an unimaginably affluent life, but in this different world, she could only fall to becoming a thief, living a life where her survival was uncertain, and eventually dying in an obscure corner where no one knew about her.

While the shooter's circumstances made Ronald feel emotional, it also strengthened his determination to pursue magic.

In an era where morality was entirely dependent on the mercy of those in power, only by grasping strength could one avoid becoming insignificant.

After searching the corpse again, Ronald continued on his way with a bulging money pouch.

The battle had yielded decent spoils, seizing around 60 gold coins in total, the vast majority contributed by that batch of gang members.

That group of gangsters could really be said to have terrible luck, not only were they exploited by someone, but they ended up leaving their lives behind in the end as well.

As for the men in black, they were very professional. Ronald searched them thoroughly but was unable to find anything that revealed any information about them.

However, even without evidence, Ronald had a rough idea in his heart.

At this time period, sending people to assassinate him, it was difficult not to link it to the previous ambush. So the mastermind behind the scenes was either Harlington or that tower lord Morrison.
