15. Calm Before the Storm

15. Calm Before the Storm

I wait for their planning meeting to end. As soon as we arrived, they held a meeting for the attack. They’re planning to overtake the capital and all of its government while they’re drunk in the victory of Avareel. Those people are the people that sick of war between race. They think that a peaceful life is possible if they willing to think of other races as equal and talk about it. The usual thinking. But ironically, it they have to overtake the government and with the current system, the only way is rebellion.

We’ve been given a room for the three of us. Actually, they wanted to give us one room for each person, but I couldn’t take any risk of getting separated from Erfia and Reis. In this kind of rebellion, it is likely for a spy to infiltrate. If, they look Erfia or Reis as a possible bargaining chip, it will cause me another trouble.

“Daddy, how did you know each other?”

Erfia have just filled my mana ring and now she’s eating her dinner. Apparently, we’re a VIP guest in this place so they got our food delivered right into our room.

That’s some story to be told. “He hired me once to look for a lost relict. I took the job as Mada Jeian of the Vorks. It is a dangerous relict actually. It could manipulate everyone mana who’s looking into it and creates chaos in their mana flows and their head for some time. Only people with a great mana control could handle it. So, I needed to put it in a box. When I tried to give it to him, in the highest place from before, he made a mistake. Just one very little mistake. His hand slipped, and the relict fell down to the floor. The relict exposed to everyone in the room, and you can guess what happened. Everyone was fighting each other. Some people even died. I took his wife and his boy out of the relict exposure and kept them in check while he kept everybody in that room. Since then he and I became a friend.”

“And, what’s this promise he’s talking about.”

“Yeah, I promised him when I complete my quest of making this mana ring, I’ll come to this place to help him overthrow the government. If the idea about attacking this city didn’t not exist, maybe I’ll be distracted to the other God Item. Haha,” I close my story with a simple laugh at my carelessness.

“Wow, you’re awful, you know that?” Reis butts in our conversation.

“Yeah, I know.” I answer her easily.

Finally, Erfia finish her meal, and I put it in the corner of the room. I’ll take it to the cleaner later on. Then, someone knocks at our door. I realize this strength of knocking. He’s just using his index finger, but it already packs some power to just knock a door.

“Come on in.” I yell at the door.

The door is opened and shows Lihar with a little child on his shoulder. That kind of little child is something you rarely see in a capital. The little child is a human with a hairy ear and hand. He’s a human and beast man child. It makes him look like a little human with a hairy body. Lihar let the child comes down of his shoulder and the kid runs towards me.

“Uncle Mada, long time no see.” The child greets me with the brightest smile he could give.

“Yeah, long time no see.” I pat his head gently. “Erfia, Reis, meet Ado, he’s Lihar child.”

“Hi, I’m Ado!” He greets Reis and Erfia in another cheerful tone.

“Hi, hi,” Erfia greet him back from behind Reis’s leg. It seems she’s kind of afraid of him.

“Whoa, another half beast man! I’m so lucky.”

Unlike Erfia that shows her shyness, Ado is a cheerful and kind of aloof. He will be amazed by anything around him.

“Ado, would you please take Erfia for a trip around?” I ask Ado.

“Sure thing!” Ado runs toward Erfia and pulls her hand.

Erfia is not moving. She’s hesitating about coming with the boy. But Ado is a persistent kid and keeps on pulling her until she lets go of Reis leg.

“Reis, come with them.” I command Reis as Ado and Erfia reach the door. A three words fugitive should be enough for a bodyguard.

Reis says no word and just gets out of the room to follow them. Now, I’m alone with Lihar in this room. I sit at the bed while Lihar sits at the chair in front of me.

“So, you will attack the capital tomorrow? What are you going to do? Capture the king?” I bombard him with a question regarding the meeting.

It’s not that I wildly guess it. But on the way to this room, I realized every soldier was cleaning and preparing their weapons and guns. Some beast man was crying in front of his family. So, I concluded the attack will begin at a near time. Tomorrow.

“You know it well. Yes, we’ll attack the capital tomorrow. We’ll attack the Gate of the World and the Palace at the same time. We need to seal the quick escape route.”

“I don’t care about all of that. You know the most dangerous thing is out there. Did you find the holder?” I cut to the chase.

Lihar sighs. “No, we couldn’t. The only thing we know is her name, Therion, or known as Therion the Unknown. She’s a one word hero. Only the king knows her whereabouts.”

“So, it means you’ll attack the capital tomorrow but you have no idea where she is? How do you even know that she’s not here already? Maybe she’s disguising herself as one of the people here. Or even worse, as the main rebellion army. Do you even think about that?”

Lihar says nothing. He just freezes when I mention it.

“You know pretty damn well her God Item. By using it, she can change into anyone and any race she wants. Let’s just say she’s a beast man type cat, she could change her appearance, her personality, her habit, and even her way of thinking when she’s turning into another person. Do you realize it?”

Apparently, he’s not so smart for things like this. But, if this Therion is a beast man type cat, we’re on a serious problem. Beast man type cat is the sliest beast man type ever exist. Unnecessary to be told, they have a lot higher intelligence than normal beast man. Even higher than the average human. Lion and tiger are just a big cat with a high power but less intelligent than cat.

This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere.

Her God Item, the Perfect Role Play, is the worst thing to pair with a beast man type cat. As I said, the Perfect Role Play makes the holder able to change their appearance, personality, habit, and way of thinking. Even she can use it to change herself into an angel, human, elf, undead, or demon. It could even make her body specialty also changes. When she’s turning into elf for example, her affinity toward mana is changed into one similar to elf. But her minimum ability is not changing. So, if she were to turn into a beast man type lion, she still inhabits her high intelligence plus the type lion power.

It is a cheat. Well, all God Item is a cheat item.

“Cancel it!”

“What?”

“Cancel it! Cancel your attack. Without you know anything about her whereabouts, it is too risky to attack. It’s a suicide mission.” I try to corner him.

Lihar stands up and walks around the room. I can see his face is kind of pale. He’s trying to think about it. If he thinks about it logically, he will stop the attack and rethink about it.

“No, I can’t.” Lihar stops in front of me and makes his statement. “We already planned this long before you came. Just because you think it’s too risky doesn’t change the fact that capital is at its weakest state. The attack will begin tomorrow and you can’t do anything to stop it. We’ll do it with or without you.”

Just as I thought, he can’t make a clear judgment. We’re not on the same page here. I can feel his stare is not one that of a friendly stare.

“Then you’ll do it without me. I’ll just go around the capital, looking for her tomorrow. At least your attack provides enough diversion for me.”

“Good. Then can I entrust the role of looking for her to you?” He opens his hand to me. He’s expecting me to shake his hand.

What? Entrust me with the role of looking for her?

“Ha, hahahahahaha” I let out a burst of laughter.

I put my palm in my face thinking his words. He really is an optimistic bastard. When I clearly said that I won’t attack the capital with him. I just broke my promise. But it seems he thinks I worry and looking for this Therion woman is the right choice as it might endanger the attack. He really is something else. Now I see why he is chosen as the leader.

“Fine then. I’ll take the mission of finding her.” I stand up and shake his hand.

He trusts me too much if I could say. I can’t really let a man that is not so smart to be disappointed toward me. Well, maybe I can.

“Excuse me, honey, are you inside?”

Suddenly a knock on the door and a voice rises from outside the door. I recognize this voice. The voice is gallant yet so gentle.

“Yes, come on in.” Lihar says the person outside the door.

The door is opened and shows the person. She’s Lihar wife. Her name is Fiona. She’s your average woman of human race. Long black hair, braided, white skin. She has this petite figure that makes her cute. She’s using a red one piece long clothes like your usual Chinese clothes.

“Ah, Fiona. Long times no see.” I walk toward her and we hug each other.

After a short time, we let go of the hug. The three of us are having a nice long conversation in the room until finally Ado, Erfia, and Reis come back.

“Hey, how’s this place?” I ask Erfia which look way happier than before.

“It’s great. I never see such a beautiful town. Even if this town is underground the light from the building and the iron is making it not too dark. Even the variation of the glow and the light make it more beautiful. And, and,”

“Take it easy Erfia. There’s no need to hurry.” Reis pats her head to calm her head down.

“Yeah, okay then.”

While listening to Erfia story, I suddenly put my eyes on Ado. He has something I didn’t realize before.

“Hey, Ado, I wonder what that’s ring in your right hand?” I ask him while pointing at her finger.

“Oh, this?” Ado lifts her right hand and point her ring finger with her left index finger.

“Yeah, I also wonder what ring is that.” Erfia also expresses her curiosity.

A yellow ring with a red stone in the middle of it and blue stone in the right and left side of the red stone. But what’s taking all the attention is not the stone, but the shape that looks like a crown.

“Looks great, isn’t it? I found it a few months ago when I played in the mining area. I look like uncle Mada.” Ado answers with a very cheerful tone.

I look into my right hand and look into my middle finger with the mana ring and my pinky finger with the Keeper.

“Yeah, he bragged it all along when he found it! He keeps on saying with that ring, he looks like you.” Fiona is adding Ado words.

“Wow, that’s nice.” I praise him.

Lihar look at the outside and see the light is getting dim. It seems it is time to part. In this place, the light in the iron is like a clock. When the light is strong and only letting small glow then it means is day, when it’s brighter and letting a big glow then it's night, but when the light is getting dim it is sleep time.

“It seems our time has ended. Time to call it a day.” Lihar stands and walks toward Ado with Fiona.

“Yeah, I wish you the best of luck for the attack.” I depart him with some pray.

“The same for you. I hope you could find her and ensure our win.” Lihar says his departing words.

The three of them leave our room, and right now we’re back to only three of us. But I have to say something to Erfia and Reis before they go to sleep.

“Erfia, Reis, We have a huge problem.”
