An elderly man stood still, arms clasped behind his back and giving off a noble presence. He is the head of the Wilson family, Rex Wilson. The Wilson family controls around 12% of Utopia city population and land, therefore the mere mention of this man’s name would instill fear into a resident of Utopia.
Utopia city is a perfect concept, almost anyone would agree. No taxes, free housing, food, water, advanced medical care, education, no air pollution, clean streets, cutting-edge magical technology, etc.
Unfortunately, the designers of the system, the immortals, made one fatal mistake. They forgot about one of the seven deadly sins of humanity, greed. Humans have a natural desire to obtain more money, wealth, material possessions, or anything else they can claim as their own.
When you provide everything for free and everyone is treated equally by the system, suddenly humans feel a need to be above others.
With this mindset, a thousand years ago when Utopia city first opened to the public. Some powerful noble families moved their base of operations over to start fresh. These nobles were often kicked out of their countries for betrayal or illegal activities.
Not only were most of them, twisted people, they were also very ambitious.
Victor put many artifacts in place with the aim for Utopia city to run itself with no input needed, it's just supposed to be a coin generator after all. Tasks that would normally be managed by a government are instead done through enormous arrays that automatically self-repair buildings from damage, clear out waste, provide food and water daily. Even transportation is managed through the teleportation artifacts.
The most controversial array is the killing intent array. This array automatically paralyzes anyone who emits any killing intent towards anything. This was put in place to stop killing and assassination attempts and works very well. There is a 0% homicide rate in Eden and Utopia city.
The Grand Council decided this would be enough and a police force wasn’t necessary. When everything is provided and killing is impossible what possible reasons would people have to fight?
Well, these ambitious nobles found a workaround. They brought over their private army or hired men from guilds in other countries to work for them.
They would then send these men to harass their neighbors to try and get them to hand over their land to them. Although killing is impossible there are other ways such as standing in front of their shops and blocking people from getting inside or just standing in their gardens and shouting random insults all day.
Since there was no police force and the people were left to defend themselves from the harassment the only way to get these nobles to stop was to fight back with a bigger force.
Stolen novel; please report.
People agreed to join up under the leadership of the person with the most money or men available to fight back. Eventually, most of these nobles were forced to leave Utopia but these groups stayed together afterward and formed one massive family, they usually all picked the surname of the leader or made one up.
The Wilsons is one of these families. 12% of Utopia’s residents have the surname Wilson and Rex is the leader of them all. These gigantic families or factions within Utopia wage a long civil war, not by fighting but through business.
These families each have a net worth of some counties. Rex Wilson is technically the CEO of over eighteen thousand companies. The war for money is truly insane.
Why? Once every 10 years the ascension auction is held. The heads of each family and all the Kings and Queens of every country are invited. The auction is held in the Eden auction house on the floating islands.
During the auction, many astonishing weapons, artifacts, and art pieces made by the immortals are sold. Then around 100 green cards are auctioned off. Each one goes for around a million gold. Green cards can only be obtained through this auction, being friends with an immortal or killing one of Victor’s monsters.
Of these options buying one for a million gold is by far the easiest. But the main item of the auction is the single blue card. Apart from the tournament which is held every 50 years where a blue card is a grand prize, this is the only other way to obtain one.
It’s every family head’s dream to join the lofty ranks of the immortals.
The last blue card was won by the Titan family for 5 trillion gold. The next ascension auction is going to be held in only a few months and preparations to sell assets for gold are already underway.
Families that don’t plan to participate in this auction but instead plan to save up for the next one will happily buy all the properties and businesses for gold during this time.
Rex Wilson was in the middle of a trade negotiation when the sirens started and the voice announced the war.
Since then he had been staring out his grand window at the golden barrier covering the sky. Explosions littered the surface while beams of energy shot out from the surface to destroy the enemies leaving sonic booms behind.
Watching this sight only made Rex more determined to win that blue card and meet the people that created such powerful artifacts.

The mechanical voice delivered a terrifying piece of information to Rex and his face immediately went pale, does that include the killing intent array, this could be bad.
He could see the beautiful golden shield slowly breaking down and holes appearing on its surface as its energy is depleted. The energy beams also stopped firing.
[Emergency Request Issued from the Grand Council:
Slay the monsters to defend Utopia and Eden. Kills will be recorded on the resident’s cards automatically. Rewards will be given out to individuals and families with the highest contribution!]
Rex’s mood recovered quickly as a business opportunity has presented itself. The Edens white card has evolved into being a form of identification like a passport as well as becoming a credit card. Rex checks to see if the new feature has been added.

A smile formed on Rex’s lips. The Wilson may not have the most businesses but it ranks top 3 for the largest personal army in Utopia. This is a golden opportunity to acquire his lifelong ambition.
