Lying in bed one quiet evening, Emily's thoughts began to drift. She revisited her conversations about past lives and old memories with Lily and Lucy. She thought about her current life—how different it was from Daniel's. For the first time, she allowed herself to truly question how she had ended up in this new reality.
Daniel and by extension Emily had always been intrigued by science, especially quantum mechanics. Daniel had delved into the mysteries of the quantum world, fascinated by the abstract concepts that seemed to defy common sense. She remembered reading about wave-particle duality through Daniel—the idea that particles could behave both as particles and waves. It was a concept that had always puzzled and excited her - especially since no one knew why particles actually behaved this way.
Her thoughts wandered to the Many-Worlds Interpretation of quantum mechanics. This theory suggested that every possible outcome of a quantum event existed in its own separate universe and that some particles and waves could move from one universe to another. It was a mind-bender - the idea that meant there could be countless parallel universes, each slightly different from the next. Could it be, she wondered, that her consciousness had somehow slipped into this universe, where she could finally find the safety and belonging Daniel had yearned for for decades? Perhaps, had Daniel passed away in his sleep and Emily’s consciousness had moved to another plane in another universe?
Emily considered the nature of consciousness itself. Despite all the advances in science, consciousness remained a profound mystery. What if, she mused, consciousness could transcend the physical boundaries of time and space? What if Daniel's intense longing for a better life had willed her into this new existence? It was a comforting thought, offering a small sense of purpose to her transformation.
These reflections, however, brought an unsettling realization. What if her time in this universe was temporary, like a dream she might wake up from at any moment? She thought of the movie Family Man—how Nick Cage’s glimpse had ended when he went to sleep. The thought gripped her heart with fear. She couldn't bear the idea of losing this newfound happiness, her family, her friends - and move to to Daniel's lonely, painful life.
Suddenly overwhelmed by emotion, Emily leapt out of bed, stumbling, and ran to her parents' room in terror. Bursting through the door, she found Sarah and Thomas reading quietly. Tears streaming down her face, she cried out, "Please don't let me go away! I don't want to leave!"
Her parents, startled and deeply concerned, immediately embraced her. "Emily, sweetheart, you're not going anywhere," Sarah said softly, stroking her hair. "We're right here. We love you, and we're not going to let anything happen to you."
Thomas, holding her close, added, "You're safe with us, Emily. What happened? Did something scare you?"
Emily, still sobbing, looked up at them with wide, tear-filled eyes. "What if... what if this is all just a glimpse? What if I wake up and I'm not here anymore? What if…there are many worlds and universes, and I’m just a quantum mechanical oddity and I thought... what if I'm just dreaming all this? What if I wake up and you are gone? I don’t want you to be gone—please don’t go."

Sarah and Thomas exchanged puzzled glances, both impressed and confused by Emily's sudden burst of advanced knowledge. "Quantum mechanics?" Thomas repeated, his brow furrowing. "Emily, where did you learn about that?"
"I don’t know….I learned about it somewhere," Emily replied, sniffling uncaring about revealing her dual identity for one moment. "I read about it - about how particles can exist in multiple states at once, and how there could be many universes. Maybe... maybe I came here because I needed to be safe and happy. But what if I go back? What if I disappear?”
Sarah gently lifted Emily's chin, her eyes filled with love and concern. "Emily, I don't fully understand everything you're talking about, but what I do know is that you're here with us now. You're our daughter, and we love you very much. You're not going anywhere."
Thomas nodded, adding, "We can't explain why you're thinking these things, but what matters is that we are a family. We're real, Emily. You're real. And we're here for you, no matter what."
Emily's sobs began to subside, comforted by her parents' words. "I love you," she whispered. "I love being your daughter."
"We love you too, Emily," Sarah said, kissing her forehead. "Now, let's all get some sleep. You can stay with us tonight if you want."
Emily nodded, feeling the warmth and security of her parents' embrace. As she settled between them, she whispered a silent prayer to the universe—or whatever higher power might be listening. "Thank you for this life," she thought, her heart full of gratitude. "Please, let me stay here."

After Emily fell asleep, Sarah and Thomas couldn't shake off the conversation with Emily. Both lay awake, their minds racing with thoughts and concerns about their daughter's sudden grasp of complex scientific concepts well beyond even their years and her apparent fear of losing them.
Sarah turned to Thomas, her voice a whisper. "What do you think all of this means? How does she know so much about quantum mechanics at her age? And why is she so scared?"
Thomas sighed, running a hand through his hair. "I don't know, Sarah. It's astonishing and a bit unsettling. Maybe she's been reading more advanced books than we realized. But the fear... that’s what worries me the most. It seems so real and intense."
Sarah nodded, her mind replaying the look of desperation in Emily's eyes. "She mentioned being happy here, feeling safe. It breaks my heart to think she feels this could all disappear."
Thomas reached out, taking Sarah's hand in his. "We need to find a way to make her feel secure, to reassure her that this is real and lasting. We don't need to push her to explain everything right now..there is no need for that. What if we focus on creating more moments where she feels loved and safe?"
Sarah agreed, feeling a weight lift slightly at the thought of providing more direct support. "Yes, I think that's a good idea. Let’s spend more quality time together, do activities she likes, and make sure she knows we’re here for her - always."
Thomas smiled, squeezing Sarah’s hand. "We could plan a family day out, something fun and special. And maybe we can find some books or shows about families and security, subtly reinforcing that we’re here to stay."
In the days that followed, Sarah and Thomas focused on these small but meaningful gestures. They planned a weekend trip to the local zoo, or a children’s museum. They engaged in more family dinners, more time in the park, sharing stories from their own childhoods, creating an atmosphere of warmth and continuity.
Emily, while still holding onto Daniel's secrets, began to feel a deeper sense of safety in her new life. The love and attention from Sarah and Thomas helped ease her fears, slowly building her confidence in the permanence of her place in their family.
