Chapter 8 - Fate Lines

“So that’s it?” the assassin said after hearing Kaya’s long speech. “A great catastrophe has created a magic undead who rummages through the land and my job is to kill it?”

“Exactly,” Kaya took another sip from her pomegranate. “Are you up for the job?”

She got three warnings at the same time.

Of course she couldn’t say the obvious truth on how the magical zombie was one of her accidents. So far the assassin has agreed for the job, and if she had to score 6 evil speech points for it, so be it. But that didn’t mean she was doing a very good job.

“Alright,” Dominic puffed. “What do I get in return?”

“What do you get? You get the reputation of being a hero! You’ll be loved by every person in the kingdom.”

He thought some more. “I need something better. I need to know magic. I know you can give it to me.”

Were summoned souls always that annoying? Kaya rubbed her temples, something she was getting very used to.

“I can bestow some light magic upon you, but in return you should complete the job and reinstate an army capable of preventing further attacks.”

If he was capable for it then Kaya wouldn’t have to worry about that world anymore. And with a better world, she can reduce the chaos and gain more Holy points. Besides, Karon became an undead because Kaya fed him too much magic at once. A little bit of magic can hurt no one.

“I can do that as long as you provide me the magic first,” he muttered. “And then I’ll be sure to keep the world’s armies under my control. I’ve done far more complex tasks than that.”

Kaya nodded. It was a fair deal. At least as fair as it could get during an inter dimensional interview about the afterlife.

She leaned back and whispered to Place. “Now what?”

“Ah, now we dive into the important information my lady.”

Her arm shuddered and a new screen appeared in front of her.

“Place, what is this?”

“My lady each time you reincarnate a soul you’ll be able to choose where he is born and what gifts you can bestow upon him. The assassin Dominic has three fates, and what you choose will shape his life, and deduct the necessary Holy Points from what you have.”

Kaya stared at the screen. A person’s entire life rested on her hands. Perhaps not just his own. How he acts determines how she could remedy her mistakes.

She could pick the Assassin route since Dominick was an assassin, but if she did that, then she would have no points to award him with Basic Light Magic. A farmer’s son would be the one with the least cost, but if that doesn’t give him enough physical traits then killing a magical zombie could be a problem.

And that left only one option.

She tapped on the middle box, and the other two slowly faded. The ‘Basic Light Magic’ box kept blinking, and when Kaya tapped the entire screen disappeared and a new box popped up.

A faint white smoke rose around the man and he gave Kaya a grim stare. “I hope I’ll only be fighting a magical undead and nothing more.”

“That’s all you’ll be fighting.”

[Lies uttered. 2 Evil Points. 25 Evil Speech Points in total]

Kaya stared at the message. How the hell was that a lie? Would he be fighting something else?

There was a familiar white explosion and the man was gone.

“Well done Lady Kaya,” Place materialized beside her again. “You navigated the situation really well.”

His white boned mouth was wide, and Kaya didn’t know if that was a smile or a grin.

“Is there anything else I should do?”

“I think you can always go see how he is born.”

“What do you mean?”

“Ah, allow me to elaborate.”

He snapped fingers and Kaya’s vision faded. Now she was in a very rich room with draping red curtains, a golden chandelier hanging on top, and a bunch of woman in maid costumes surrounding a bed. A skinny but elegantly dressed man was beside the bed poking at something, and a beautiful blond haired woman cuddled something tiny in her arms.

“Look at him,” the woman’s had sweaty brows but she looked at the little thing dearly. “Look how beautiful he is!”

“They can’t see us my lady,” Place said.

Kaya walked past the maids, keeping her eyes fixed on the baby in the woman’s arms. She noticed the familiar red eyes of Dominic, and it was strange to see the grown man now turned to a bawling baby. When his eyes met hers, they were locked, and Kaya knew she saw him.

She gave a little wave, and then asked Place to send her back.

In a few moments she was back in her usual seat, the familiar glass of pomegranate in front of her.

“That’s one job done,” she stretched her arms. “Now it’s just a matter of waiting a few years.”

“That isn’t how it works my lady. A year in the human world is only a single day in the Spirit world.”

And there goes my freedom…

“So if I stay here eight days then that would be eight years in his life?”

“Quite right.”

“But this place doesn’t even have a clock!”

“This is just the summoning quarters my lady. Do you want to take a look at the mansion?”

“I have a mansion?” Kaya’s eyes widened. “And you couldn’t mention this fact sooner?”

Her hand shuddered and a new screen appeared.

URGENT!

You are required to immediately meet Holy Mother at her chambers. Avoiding the meeting will result in your death.

Place scratched his bony face with his bony hands. “I predicted this too.”

“You know something Place? It would be really nice if you could share information.”

“My lady, you were occupied.”

Kaya didn’t know whether to facepalm or slap the spirit in the face. “What is it now?”

“As of now you have 52 Evil points and 0 Holy Points. That is a problem, a very big problem.”

Kaya wanted to strangle the spirit. “How bad is it?”

“Considering how the Holy Mother herself summoned you I believe your fate will involve burning in hell.”
