Chapter 3 - Wake up to reality

Kaya landed on a well designed room with tapestries hung on walls and a pine coned ceiling with a large silver head of a wolf springing out. To her right were a set of large windows that showed a view of the entire city. In the far distance she spotted smoke rising to touch the sky and fires spreading through a set of houses. What’s worse is how she felt a presence of something…ominous.

“Where am I?” she asked.

“You are in the room of the Hero Karon,” Place’s voice echoed in her head.

“Well where is the hero…oh…” Kaya looked to her right to see a large bed at least thrice the size she had in her bedroom. Sleeping on it was a young man in his early twenties huddled between two women.

Oh great…

“I assume this is our so called hero?”

“That’s right, Goddess Kaya. You hadn’t seen him in about eight years, so I assume he slowly grew distant from his job.”

Kaya walked towards the man sleeping peacefully despite the sound of the screams and fires in the distance.

Before she could call him, Place’s voice echoed again. “Now remember Goddess Kaya, you need to maintain your status as a goddess, though I feel you are quite vexed.”

“Who are those?” Kaya eyed the two women. “His wives?”

“Prostitues, I believe.”

Kaya tried not to strange the man, and then spoke slowly.

“Dear Hero…” she paused, forgetting his name.

“Karon,” Place offered.

“Dear Hero Karon, wake up. There is danger in this town, and it is your duty to protect your citizens.”

“Bah…buh… bah…” Karon muttered something in his sleep, then pulled up the sheets.

Kaya cleared her throat loudly. “Hero Karon, I am goddess Kaya, replacement of goddess Persephone. And I have come to warn you of great danger…”

The man lazily opened his eyes and let out a loud yawn. He looked at her, and blinked twice. “Who are you?”

“As I said a few moments before you….oblivious individual…I am goddess Kaya, replacement of goddess Persephone, and your town is in danger. A minotaur is attacking the city and the citizens need your aid.”

“Mmm…whatever,” he closed his eyes again. “Bye, goddess.”

“But don’t you want to rescue your people from the creature?”

“I want to go to sleep.”

“You are the hero of this nation. It is your duty to protect the citizens.”

“I’ll try tomorrow.”

“The minotaur has already done enough damage to weaken the entire security of this kingdom. Staying till tomorrow will only mean that it will coming knocking on the door.”

“Then I’ll escape,” Karon grabbed the pillow and buried his face in it. “Bye.”

“Heed my words hero!” Kaya said through gritted teeth. “Your laziness will result in this kingdom’s ruins. Rise from the bed and get ready to fight that creature.”

Kaya waited a few seconds. The man didn’t move. Then he started snoring.

Alright that’s it…

She raised her foot and slammed it to the bed. “Wake the fuck up Samurai!”

“Waaaah!” Karon sprang up with a jolt. “Wha-what?”

At that point Kaya never cared.

“Wake up to reality! There is a monster wreaking havoc in the town and it’s supposed to be your job to kill it. So go and KILL IT!”

“I don’t want to kill it!” he snapped. “I’ve never touched a sword in 6 years!”

Kaya stared at him in disbelief. “What? Then what were you doing for 6 years?”

“Goddess Persephone never visited, so I always thought my jobs were over. So I drank booze and slept a lot.”

Kaya stared at the two women slowly stirring in their sleep. “Yes, I can definitely see that. I don’t care how bad you are at holding a sword these days, but your job is to kill that creature. Do it!”

Karon frowned. “What if I say no?”

Kaya gritted her teeth. She hadn’t thought of that possibility. She always thought heroes were supposed to obey the goddesses.

“Lady Kaya,” she heard Place’s voice in her head back again. “You can threaten this mortal scum…I mean, human.”

“Tell me how.”

“Who are you talking to?” Karon asked.

“You have the ability to use magic,” Place said. “What you will, is what you’ll get.”

Alright, let’s give it a shot.

Kaya extended her hand at the man, then concentrated.

Karon crawled to the edge of the bed. “What are you doing?”

Spiders…I want spiders…

Karon stared at her, and he suddenly screamed as he jumped out of the bed, pushing the two women aside.

“Aaargh! Take them away from me! Take them away!!!”

There were no spiders in his body, so Kaya assumed it was a hallucination.

Kaya gritted her teeth. But at least the effort was worth it.

“Who’s the goddess now, huh?” she grinned, wiggling her fingers as the man ran around the room. “Are you going to listen to me? ARE YOU?”

The two women on the bed had already woken up, and they stared the screaming hero and ran way from the room, screaming even louder.

“Stop it! Stop it!” Karon ran towards the window. “Okay, okay, I’ll do it.”

“That’s more like it,” Kaya concentrated on the magic to dissipate. “Is there an army in this place?”

“There’s the royal army.”

“Will they answer your call?”

“I don’t think they even remember me.”

“Then make them remember you, and start getting prepared fast! And I better not find you running away. If that happens, you know I’ll always find you.”

“Yes…yes…” he nodded, then started pulling up the trousers on the floor. After taking a few minutes to dress up, the man scuttled out of the room.

“Well done mistress,” Place said. “Though I believe you broke a lot of rules.”

“I tried asking him nicely. That didn’t work. You have a better suggestion?”

“No.”

And his voice faded.

Kaya rubbed her temples then stared out from the window. Now it was just a matter of seeing how the events would play out.
