Chapter 1 - Look, a white truck!

Kaya felt the weight of her bag as she trodded lazily along the street in the hot summer evening. Being the class rep was hard. It became extra hard ever since the bullying started to happen. It was either some lewd words and drawings on her desk, or water right on top her when she was in the bathroom stall, or even rotten food in her locker. And she had to manage all of that and still be the teacher’s good pet.

So much for being a class rep.

She reached the crossing. It was busier during evenings. The people who were out of their offices drove like maniacs to get home. She followed the good old routine of looking left, looking right, and then stepping along the crossing. She was halfway through it when something rattled down. She turned to see a large hole in her bag. Her pencil case had fallen down, and in it lay on the crossing broken into two.

Guess someone decided creating a gaping hole through her bag was a great way to bully her.

“Fuck!” she cursed, bending down to pick it up.

She was picking up the blue pen when the horns started honking. She turned to her left to see a white car racing towards her with headlights flashing and horn blaring.

At least I’m not going to be killed by a white truck.

Just when she thought her life was flashing before her eyes, the car hit the brakes. The tires screeched, and it came to a halt inches away from her.

“Are you drunk?” a man dressed in a blue shirt and a hanging tie bobbed his head out and yelled. “What the hell are you doing in the crossing?”

I’m wondering how white the crossing is dumbass, Kaya almost wanted to say it, but she bit back the words.

“I-I’m sorry,” she hastily picked up her things and gave a short bow. “My things fell down.”

She hurried over, but the man kept screaming.

“Stupid high school girls! If something happened to you it would have been my fault! No one would believe it was you who was squatting on the road like an idiot!”

Kaya kept walking, gritting her teeth and not saying a word. She was almost tired of the insults. It didn’t matter if it was school, her house or even the road it was always insult after insult…

The man was still yelling. “Next time you better open your eyes-”

Kaya had had enough.

“You know what?” she turned back, and yelled aloud for the entire road to here. “Fuck you! Fuck you and your white car! I was just bending down to pick up my things, and I don’t want to hear a goddamn word because I’ve been suffering all this time-”

“Hey girl!” the man waved his hands.

“People like you never understand! It’s always you and your big-”

“Hey!”

“WHAT?”

“Get out of the road, there’s a truck coming!”

Tara turned to her right to see a big white truck coming at her in full speed. While she was insulting she had almost crossed to the other side of the road.

Oh now it’s a truck!

She turned to run to the other side. Her bag rattled, and something fell down again. But she didn’t care. She had almost reached the pavement when the horns blared, lights flashed, and something large hit her with a force enough to jolt pain from every inch of her body. Tears streaked her eyes, her ears rang, she remembered yelling something, and then everything went black.

“Ahem,” some woman cleared her throat. “Can you wake up? I need to finish this quickly.”

Kaya opened her eyes. She was lying on something hard but cold. The pain in her body was gone, and her eyes stared at the night sky above her. It was glittering with something like stars. She looked to her right. Than her left. She seemed to be in some sort of a tiled platform drifting in space.

She groaned as she sat down, and in front her was a very weirdly dressed woman. She wore a lot of jewelry, and a single white dress that looked like a medieval royal gown. The golden bangles in her hands rattled as she folded her hands.

“Now that you are up, I’m going to send you somewhere.”

Kaya stared around, fear clawing up her throat for the first time. “Where am I?”

“Oh dear Blessed Mother!” the woman groaned as she fell back on her chair. “Why? Why is that always their first question? I’m tired of explaining this to them over and over again.”

“H-have I been reincarnated?” Kaya asked, looking at her body. She still looked the same though.

“No, but you soon will be. This is The Passage and your soul has been randomly taken from the Soul Stream so I can send you off to one of my worlds. I’ll probably reincarnate you in a poverty filled family. You definitely have the looks of it. And then it’s your job to go trough the eight stages of the hero’s journey and kill the demon king.”

“W-what are you talking about? Soul Stream? Demon king?” Kaya wondered if she had accidentally reincarnated in one of her fantasy novels. “Who are you?”

“I am a goddess, and that’s all I’m going to say,” she was tapping into thin air. It was funny watching from the outside.

But then all the pains of her previous life hit her.

“At least give me some power! I’m tired of being the one who is always being kicked around. Oh, and make sure to put me in a life where I don’t have to manage anything. Being the class rep is way harder than you think. Showing the good face to the teachers, trying to be the good girl, enduring all the bullying. I hated managing that stupid classroom.”

The goddess stopped tapping. “Wait, what did you say?”

“I always got kicked around-”

“Yes, Yes, I don’t care. What did you say after that?”

“I hated being the class rep.”

“Who’s a class rep? Some kind of warrior?”

“No,” Kaya thought of the best way to put it. “It’s like someone who manages a class full of rowdy warriors.”

The goddess stared at her. Then she brushed her hands at the thin air. “You are a very lucky one lady,” she beamed. “Because I believe my salvation lies within you.”

“What?”

“You see, I’ve been doing this job for a long, long, long time, and I’m getting tired. I want to retire. I’ve been searching for a replacement, but replacements are still under training. And I can’t wait a second more in this place. The moment another person appears in here and asks ‘where am I?’ I will be losing my mind. Therefore,” the goddess knelt in front of Kaya. She gave a cunning little smile as she removed a ring embedded with a blue diamond from her finger. “I’m leaving all of this to you.”

“Wait, what-” Kaya started to crawl back. “I-I…weren’t you supposed to reincarnate me?”

“No, you are now the goddess. Take this,” she pushed the ring at her.

“No, I don’t want that!”

“Take it! You were a class rapper weren’t you?”

“It’s called class rep, as in class-”

But the goddess grabbed her by the hand and sent the ring to her middle finger. It slid in perfectly, and somewhere inside her body, Kaya felt a lock clicking.

No, no, no, no….

Her vision started to fade. Again.

“Alright. Now you have access to the system. Place will change your appearance. Your new name will be Kaya. I hope you have a great time with this job. Definitely better than mine. Just keep an eye out for Great Mother, she is tough with newcomers. See you!”

A sudden white light flashed, and the goddess disappeared along with it. In the next moment Kaya was in a void, surrounded by emptiness.

Kaya opened her eyes. Her body felt more lighter, and the aches in her body faded away. In front of her lay the platform, and as she looked around she saw she was sitting on the seat the goddess had been.

Shit…

She groaned and leaned back as a new voice resounded within her.

[Hello Lady Kaya, welcome to The Passage. I hope you are ready to get started.]
