"Good morning, Josef." said Caden.
Josef yet again woke up with a red handprint on his face. It has been over a week since they holed up in the cafeteria. It was peaceful. No worries, no stress, no fighting, only peace, and cold. Amid the ever-raging blizzard, they had finally found peace for a brief moment, until...
"Umm, guys..." said Gerald.
"What is it, honey?" asked Serenity.
"We might have a problem."
"What do you mean?" asked Caden.
"Well... we're out of food."
"What!? We had so much food just yesterday." exclaimed Caden.
"You're actually responsible for this, Caden." said Josh.
"What!? Why me!?"
"You've been stuffing your face for the past few days!" said Matt.
"You can't be serious, I wasn't eating that much."
"Well... you do, actually." said Josef.
"You've been eating 10 pieces every meal." said Avery.
"But.. we had so much food in the back rooms, it couldn't have run out that quickly." said Caden.
"But it just did." said Josef.
"When was the last time you went in the back rooms?" said Gerald.
"Umm.. only on the first day when we came here." said Caden.
"Yep, since I'm the one who cooks every day, I could already predict when our supply was going to run out, and that's today." said Gerald.
"Then why didn't you warn us!?" said Caden.
"He's right, we would have rationed it wisely if you told us." said Josh.
"No worries everyone, aren't you forgetting something?" said Gerald.
"What?" asked Matt.
"There are two rooms in the back rooms, and if I remember correctly, it's used for food storage as well."
"Then what are we waiting for?" said Caden, "let's go open it!"
They all went into the back rooms, they glanced in the first room where the door was wide open, the once filled shelves were now almost empty, the pieces of burger patties, sausages, and other meat products could be easily counted. Gerald was right, they were going to run out of food today.
From the first hour the disaster hit, and even before that, their stay in this school has been filled with difficulties, and that still applies today. As they stood in front of the second room in the back rooms, they faced their next challenge. Josh reached for the handle and attempted to open the door, but as always, it was locked.
If you stumble upon this tale on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.
Josh sighed, "Here we go again."
Josh tried to brute force his way in, just like during that time when they tried to open the first door, and just like the first attempt, Josh couldn't break his way in.
Josh leaned on the wall, gasping for breath. "Gerald... key!"
"Not this again, we all know it's not going to work." said Gerald.
"Try it anyways." said Josh.
Gerald took out the key from his pocket and inserted it in the keyhole. This time, the key was too small, and when he inserted it, it was loose.
"God damnit! That key is looking more and more useless every time," said Josh.
"It'll open something eventually, someday." said Gerald.
"It will open something alright, if we haven't starved to death by then, right Caden?" said Josh.
"Oh, here we go again, Don't place all the blame on me, you were eating a lot as well. Don't act like you don't have a fault in this." said Caden.
"Fine, I admit, I did eat a bit too much on some occasions." said Josh. "But it was because the meat was too good."
"There we go! Something we can both agree on." said Caden.
"Enough chit-chatting, more opening." said Avery.
"If the key doesn't work, then let's just do the same thing that worked on the first door." said Josef.
"Which was?" asked Matt.
Josef stared at Matt, the others got the memo and stared at Matt as well.
"Ohhhhhh, oh, fuck." said Matt. "Here we go again."
Matt grabbed the hook from his pocket, the one he made from Serenity's paper clip. He inserted it in the keyhole, and got to work.
"Maybe it's not so bad after all." said Matt. "I think I'm getting used to this."
Only a few minutes had passed, but he was now confident in his skills.
"Push this up, then this one, and... click, the door is open, everyone!" said Matt.
Everyone stood in front of the door, anticipating that when they opened it, a paradise of food would welcome them again.
"Matt, you do the honors." said Caden.
Matt twisted the doorknob, and pushed the door open.
What awaited them inside, was darkness. They couldn't see inside the room since there was no light source near them. The only lights that illuminated the cafeteria were from the sun, which had already been dimmed by the blizzard. and a few small ceiling lights here and there that were already a bit dim from lack of maintenance. The first room in the backrooms was just a few steps away from the cafeteria, so the light could still barely reach in, giving them enough visibility, but since the second room was a bit further in the backroom's hallway, it was completely pitch black.
They cautiously entered the room.
"I can't see a goddamn thing!" said Josh.
"Same here." said Matt.
"Ewww, what was that?" said Serenity. A splashing sound was created when she took a step.
"What is it, honey?" asked Gerald.
"I stepped on something.. wet." said Serenity.
"Wet? Maybe some juice spilled or something." said Avery.
Josef walked along the walls of the room, sliding his hand on the wall, in an attempt to find the light switch. He kept walking until something crossed his path. His foot bumped into something on the ground. He picked it up. It was cold and wet. He gave it a squeeze, it was soft, and as he squeezed the object, it oozed out something, which made it even more wet. It felt like meat.
"Guys! I think I found food!" exclaimed Josef.
"What!? Nice! Let me cop a feel of it." said Caden.
He rushed towards Josef, it was dark, but for some reason, he quickly found his way to him. He may have judged his location from Josef's voice, or maybe the meat called out to him, guiding him towards Josef.
"Give me that!" said Caden as he snatched the meat from Josef's hand. He gave it a squeeze, and more mouth-watering juices came out.
"This is amazing! It's so fucking juicy, I can't wait to eat it." said Caden as he imagined what the meat looked like in his hand.
"Has anyone found the light switch yet!?" yelled Matt.
"If someone did, then the lights would have opened by now, idiot." said Josh. "And what's with all this water on the ground?"
"Oh! I think I found it!" exclaimed Josef. When Caden was admiring the meat he snatched from him, he went back to searching, and eventually his hand bumped into something on the wall.
Click. He pressed the switch.
Caden's eyes were glued to the slab of meat he was holding, he couldn't see what it was, yet he fantasized about Gerald grilling it and him eating it, stuffing his face with all the meat they were going to find in the room. As the lights turned on, his delicious delusions suddenly came crashing down as he saw in his hand, was indeed, meat, but it was a kind of meat he wasn't expecting, human meat, a heart.
