Chapter 11: Trial and Error

Chapter 11: Trial and Error

"So what did you have for dinner?"

"Nothing much, just an egg sandwich, how about you? Are you still addicted to those chicken burritos of yours?"

"Yep, still the best food on earth, no debate."

"You need to eat some healthier stuff," the man sighed, "chicken every day is bad for your health, you know?"

"I'll eat it until I die."

"Well I hope you die soon then." he gave a slight chuckle.

Two men dressed in pristine white lab coats entered the room. They waltzed in without paying any attention to the mound of corpses in their peripheral vision.

"Wait, did you finish with the sample?" he asked, pointing to the surgery table with open handcuffs.

"Nope, I thought you finished with it." he shrugged. "Eww, why the fuck is there vomit on the floor?" he pointed to Caden's fresh vomit.

"It might have been from the last sample, good thing we weren't there to witness it. Who took over for us anyway?"

"I'm not really sure, but at least someone lessened our workload when we left for dinner, that's one more student down for the count." he laughed vigorously.

"Yep, one more corpse to add to the reeking pile over there." he chuckled as he pointed to the mountain of corpses at the corner of the white room.

The scientists were indeed correct—to some extent. Caden did join the mountain of decaying corpses, but he wasn't dead.

Before the scientist had entered the room, Caden panicked as he heard the two scientists' footsteps echo outside of the room. He didn't know what to do, so he simply looked for a place to hide. As he heard the scientists' chatter more clearly, he knew he was running out of time. There were no lockers, boxes, or anything that he could use in order to act as a hideaway, and in the spur of the moment, he glanced at the mountain of corpses, their eyes glanced back as if they were calling for him, luring him to join them in the afterlife, so at the last second, Caden did exactly that—except for the latter part. He jumped in the bloody pile, and he squished his body between decaying pieces of bloody meat, it felt a bit like slime—just a bit morbid though.

As the two scientists entered the room, Caden was still trying to calm himself down from the sheer panic of hiding. He couldn't fully hear what the two were talking about, but he did catch a few words like sandwich and chicken burrito. Caden was smacked center in the pile of corpses and only had a small opening to look through, because of this, he couldn't see their faces or any feature that could set them apart, they had the same white lab gown, same black colored slacks, same brown colored leather shoe, and even close to identical skin color, the only thing that could set them apart were their voices, and the other one was slightly taller.

The taller scientist walked over to the table with the ampules, "So... which one was next again?" he said while looking at the different labels on the ampules.

"It was 23a I think... wait, that's not right... yeah, it was 24a, or was it 12b..." the man was indecisive.

"Let's just try 23a, it doesn't hurt to double check, well... not hurt us at least." he chuckled.

"Yep, but it will definitely hurt someone else." he gave a faint laugh.

"Alright then, I'll just go ahead and grab the next sample real quick." said the smaller one, he quickly left the room while the taller one was left in the room with the hidden Caden, and he moved around some of the tools, primarily a scalpel, an ampule, and a syringe. Afterwards, he glanced around the room for a moment, then he stopped, he stood still for a moment, he looked towards the pile of decaying students, and approached it slowly, very slowly, like he was cautious of something. Caden started to sweat buckets, his heart pounding more and more as the man got closer, he stopped directly in front of the pile, and as Caden thought it was all over, the man turned back and sat on the office chair facing the computer, where he proceeded to type some things into it while awaiting for the other scientist to come back with the sample.

After a few minutes, the door swung open as the scientist had returned from grabbing the sample. The scientist switched the tab on the computer as he got up from typing. Caden wasn't sure what they meant by "sample" at first, but he did have a slight suspicion, and as the other scientist helped pull the sample into the room, his suspicions were correct. The scientist pulled in a medical stretcher with wheels inside the room, above it lies an unconscious girl wearing the same uniform as Caden, the same with everyone else that was dead on the pile, the sample that they were talking about was a student. The taller scientist carried the girl out from the stretcher and placed her on the surgery table, placing her hands and feet into the cuffs, and as the other scientist pressed the same red button Caden miraculously pressed, the cuffs closed this time, binding the girl and immobilizing her. The scientists strapped on their white medical gloves which they pulled out from their pockets. They attached some wires to the sides of the girl's head.

"Let's continue the testing." the tall one said.

"Pass me the scalpel." said the tall one. The other passed the scalpel, he was the assistant while the tall one did the operation. He cut into the side of the forehead of the poor girl, the cut starts from the end of the eye brow and extends to the sideburns, leaving an open cut of around three inches in length.

"Cloth." said the tall one as the other quickly handed him the piece of fabric. He wiped the blood oozing out of the wound.

"Drill." said the man. The other handed him a small handheld drill. He inserted the long tip into the wound, and as he pulled on the trigger, the drill bit began to spin rapidly. Blood, flesh, and bone particles began to fly out from the drill site, dyeing their glistening white lab gowns red. Caden closed his eyes in fear and disgust as he saw the scientist drill into the poor girl's skull. The simple thought of it almost made him puke. He knew that whatever they were doing was simply illegal and inhumane. Caden couldn't stand the sound of the drill anymore, and as the sound continued, he knew that they were drilling deeper and deeper into her skull, and as the sound stopped, the scientists had reached her brain.

"Ampule, syringe." said the man. The other scientist quickly grabbed both and handed it to him. The scientist grabbed them both, the ampule in his left hand and the syringe in his right. He smashed the glass end of the ampule on the side of the table, opening it while tiny droplets of the liquid inside spilled on the ground. He inserted the syringe tip into the glass ampule and sucked out the unknown purple fluid inside with the syringe. He handed the ampule to the other scientist and inserted the needle into the brain of the girl, slowly injecting the unknown liquid into her head. After he injected all of it and removed the needle, the girl suddenly woke up. She screamed at the top of her lungs as she struggled in her binds.

"Make it stop! make it stop! make it stop! make it stop!" She screamed. She continued to scream and struggle, but all her efforts were useless as the metal cuffs were simply too tough for a weak high school girl to get out off. The two scientists simply watched as the girl screamed in pain and agony as she continued to struggle, Caden couldn't do anything and simply watched in horror at the sight that he was seeing.

The girls' screams didn't last long, and as she screamed her final words, "MAKE IT STOOOOP!", she stopped screaming, even her movements were stopped, she was as stiff as a log. Her eyes were still wide open, but she didn't speak nor move. The small scientist sighed as he went over to the computers and sat on the chair, bashing on the keyboard as he typed something.

"Let's see... brain failure followed by organ failure again?"

"Yep." answered the one typing.

"We really aren't going to finish in time are we?"

"Probably not."

He sighed, "He's already starting the project even though the main substance isn't even finished yet."

"I know right, He seemed more and more impatient as the days went by, and now he's starting it even if we're not ready."

"I need a raise."

"So do I."

After he finished typing, he stood up and pressed the red button, releasing the dead girl from the chains that bound her. The two carried the girl, with the tall one carrying the upper half and the other carrying the lower half. They slowly walked over to the pile of decaying bodies that Caden was hiding in and tossed the girl into it, adding another count to the pile.
