Why is my reflection looking down my shirt? (Ch. 4)

Why is my reflection looking down my shirt? (Ch. 4)

“Hey, Bear. Do you know where Amgis is? Class is about to start soon,” Mia asks in a meek and sweet voice. His real name isn’t Bear, but a nickname that he acquired by hibernating like one in class. And that is where the comparison ends. He is a rather dainty boy with mouse-like features, unlike what his name would suggest.

He opens one eye in response to Mia’s question, having already fallen asleep hunched over on his desk in the comfort of arm pillows. After a few moments, his mouth opens, giving the impression that he was about to answer Mia, only for it to be a ten-second yawn.

“I need to ask him something,” she adds, growing a bit impatient. Bear is one of Amgis’s few school friends that happens to share a class period with both of them.

“Hmmmm,” Bear grumbles, half-asleep, “I think I saw him go the restroom somewhere during lunch.”

“Really? You sure? Is he still using it?”

“Beats me. You can check there,” Bear sighed.

“I can’t go into a boys’ bathroom!”

The thought made her tremble from embarrassment.

“He fared into the haunted restroom.”

“Yeah, and I still can’t…”

It took a second for her mind to register what Bear has said. Her face pales after realization.

“Wait… the haunted one? Why didn’t you stop him?”

She rushes out of the classroom in a dead sprint, leaving Bear before he could defend himself.

“He’s gone and left from that restroom five times to be fair,” he said as he drifted back off to sleep.

Her concern over Amgis getting eaten by a mirror apparently outweighs her concern about showing up late to class. She is athletic, despite not being in any sports, and known for her lean figure. As she runs through the Science building corridor and up a flight of stairs, many boys can’t help but steal a glance as she flies past them.

For many reasons, including her innate beauty, Mia Lefnee is a popular girl at North Tron High School. If there was a hierarchy of popularity made up of three tiers, she would be placed in the middle of tier one. While Amgis would be ranked in the bottom of tier two, despite his best efforts to be lower. Their two worlds should by no means be mixed but by some miracle, they shared three classes together in Freshman year and were always seated near each other. By mere proximity, they developed a school friendship.

The next year, they shared no classes together, but still occasionally talked to each other in between classes. And so, as it typically goes in such cases, Amgis developed romantic feelings for her. Another year went by and now they share one class again. Only, she isn’t sitting near him and is instead next to a good-looking guy, named Dahc Agig. And he seems to be hitting on her. Nothing has happened between Dahc and Mia yet, but it is only a matter of time if Amgis doesn’t do anything.

It’s unclear whether Mia has any interest beyond friendship with Amgis. He isn’t bad looking by any means, but when compared to Dahc, he is a bit unremarkable and has a duller personality. Maybe she finds that attractive though. With how distraught she looks as she approaches the haunted boys’ bathroom, there seems a be a possibility of something greater than normal feelings. Which would be a clear example of how a girl’s taste can be wrong.

She reached the bathroom door without breaking much of a sweat and in a fearless gesture, pulled the door open without hesitation. Unintentionally, standing in a heroic entrance position—with feet shoulder length apart, knees slightly bent, and hands balled into a fist. Only to be met with a traumatic scene of Amgis’s reflection moving on its own, becoming a regular reflection, and then her own reflection moving on its own. Her knees instantly gave out upon this sight. Falling into the bathroom, and allowing the door to shut behind her.

“Mia!”

Amgis rushes to her side.

“Why does everyone think that I am going to eat them?” her reflection mumbles thoughtfully, mimicking her soft, sweet voice. Which only further freaks out Mia. Tears start to leak out of her eyes.

“Mia, are you okay?”

She yelped in response.

“Oh, Amgis,” she sighs in relief. “You’re not eaten.”

Apparently, she hadn’t noticed him upon opening the door. Amgis tried to quickly explain the situation. Skipping largely over the reason why he uses the bathroom in the first place. As he talks, Mia listens and slowly calms down. She doesn’t ask any questions surprisingly, despite her face clearly showing fits of confusion.

“Why are you here?” he asks after covering almost everything.

“Oh, I… I, um…” She pauses to look over Amgis’s shoulder. “Why is my reflection looking down my shirt?”

“Hey!” Amgis turns around quickly, and a little too eagerly, “Stop that!”

Mia’s reflection innocently meets Amgis’ conflicted gaze—disapproving of its actions but beyond thrilled to sneak a peek.

“What?!”

Amgis’ thrill was immediately squelched by the reflection’s response, being too out-of-character for Mia.

“I was just curious as to why this reflection is curvier than yours.”

“Pffff.”

Mia covers her mouth. Seemingly surprised by her own reaction to her reflection’s innocent words.

“There is also not a weird thing pointing from the pants,” her reflection observes.

“Pffffffft.”

Mia gets lost in a fit of giggles. Surprising both an embarrassed Amgis and her ignorant reflection.

“You’re the scary mirror that I’ve heard about,” she says after catching her breath.

“Scary mirr—”

“What’s your name?” Mia asks, not allowing the mirror to reflect on her previous words. “Do you have a name?”

“I don’t think—actually, yes. It’s Rimorr.”

The haunting mirror has a name apparently. One that it seemed to have forgotten.

“You have a name?” Amgis says, flabbergasted. The thought that a mirror could have a name hadn’t crossed his mind.

“You’ve been here five times, but didn’t know its name?”

“It didn’t come up,” he shrugged, acting chagrin.

Rimorr looks at Amgis suspiciously due to his odd behavior—lifting one of Mia’s full, black eyebrows and slightly puffing out her lips. A surprisingly cute display that made Amgis’s eyes widen.

“I don’t understand boys,” Mia said, not catching the others' exchange. “ Well, anyways, we got to go. Would love to talk more, but class has probably already started and I could get in trouble for being in a boys' bathroom.”

“Oh, shoot. You’re right.”

Amgis helped Mia to her feet, lifting her by the hand. Once back up straight, she twisted back to the door and held it open as Amgis retrieved his backpack

“It was nice meeting you, Rimorr! See you!”

Her shift in attitude had changed drastically within the last few minutes toward Rimorr, who was waving in farewell with Mia’s reflection as the door shuts behind them. Though, through the vibrations in the wall, it could hear them speak for a little while longer.

“It freaked me out when I heard you were in that bathroom. Why didn’t you tell me about the mirror?”

“I’m sorry. I didn’t think you’d care… Why were you looking for me?”

“Oh, right... Because I wanted to check your homework before class. See if we got the same answers.”

“Oh, I see.”

“We’re probably gonna get yelled at—”

The vibrations ceased.
