People Can Eat People
Why can't I stop eating that stuff? (Ch. 2)

Why can't I stop eating that stuff? (Ch. 2)

Amgis Elam is a junior at North Tron High School. A semi-elite school with many teachers, many classrooms, and many students. To stand out in such an environment, one must be eccentric, witty, and beautiful. If any of these traits are out of balance, you’ll be ostracized or forgotten. Fortunately, Amgis has a decent balance but hates being the center of attention, so he has willingly become just an average student that spends most of his days by himself after school.

For the past two years, one thing Amgis has strived towards is staying clear of strange or socially harmful situations. Of which, he has almost failed numerous times. Mostly due to his self-diagnosed Irritable Bowel Syndrome and his unyielding desire to eat foods that intensely trigger his said irritable bowels. Such events occasionally occur due to the food served at school, and to protect his social comfort, he has to use the boys’ bathrooms.

There have been many close calls where he almost crapped his pants before getting on a toilet, but there has always been a bathroom for him to use. Unlike today. Today, luck is not on his side. Every bathroom is full and he is about to pop like a balloon. This is when he remembers one particular bathroom that is for sure not being used, but the stories of its mirror made him hesitate in using it. But with no options left, he desperately runs full speed to it.

Upon arriving, the mirror instantly speaks to him, proving the rumors are true. For a moment, he even forgets about his intestinal pain and races out of the bathroom. Only for the pain to return twofold. His fear no longer could outweigh his need for a toilet. However, he still does not want to get eaten, so obviously if he shields his eyes from the mirror then maybe that will protect him. His severe lack of horror movie knowledge was severely evident with this maneuver.

Yet, he is still able to make it to a safe space, dropping and unzipping his pants immediately upon entering. But he is not out of the woods yet, as he spends several excruciating minutes blowing up the toilet with stinky grenades. A bombardment capable of giving even those with the strongest wills PTSD. Eventually, though, the explosions cease, and Amgis happily leaves the stall.

Only to wind up back in turmoil upon accidentally confronting his reflection in the mirror that moves independently and speaks out of turn. Being a reflection, it looks exactly like him. With the same wavy, auburn hair that drapes on the sides of his forehead, grey eyes reminiscent of stormy clouds, and light, unblemished skin. As well as, the same school uniform that consists of a royal blue button-up and khaki slacks.

Backed into a wall, all he can hope now is that the mirror will show him mercy and not eat him. Amgis made sure to ask nicely, so that had to have scored him some pity points, even if the mirror is inherently evil.

“Why would I eat you?” the mirror said, perplexed.

But all Amgis heard is it saying in his own spine-chilling voice, “I eat you!”

“NO, please!” He fell to his knees, “Please, don’t eat me!”

“I’m not go—”

“I’ll leave your domain and never come back. I’m sorry I intruded and asked to use your sink.”

“No, it’s okay. I don’t mind. I’ve actually been really lonel—”

“I can’t die now! Not when I almost have worked up the courage to confess to Mia Lefnee!”

“LISTEN TO ME!” his reflection cries.

Amgis reduces to a shriveling chihuahua on the bathroom floor. Now too afraid to speak to his reflection standing on the other side of the mirror. Whose face is primarily filled with concern, but Amgis is not paying attention to that. In his mind, his reflection must look like a demon-possessed entity wearing his skin in another dimension.

“I’m sorry I yelled,” it says after a few silent moments, “Just, please believe me. I can’t eat you. Nor would I want to eat you.”

Amgis stares at the floor. It’s tough to tell if he had listened to what the mirror said. His mind might have exploded from the stress as he began to make a strange noise.

“Ha… Hahahaha.”

Wait. He is laughing. Amgis is laughing hysterically. He might have actually lost his mind. At this point, he should be running out of the bathroom in terror, but he is laughing like it’s 3 a.m. at a sleepover.

“Are... Are you alright?!” the reflection asks, taken aback. No one has ever acted like this in front of it before.

“Yes, yes. Ha! I’m sorry,” Amgis struggles to speak between his giggles. “It’s just… I can’t believe I said something so corny. What if those were my last words?”

He giggled for a bit longer, slowly regaining his composure and standing back onto his feet, but still not looking directly at his reflection.

“There’s no way I would ever get the courage to confess to her anyways.”

An awkward pause slices the air.

“Hmm?” Amgis’s reflection rose its eyebrows. “I don’t understand. You have the—”

“So, you aren’t gonna eat me?” Amgis cut his reflection off. Not realizing it had been saying something.

“No. Mirrors can’t eat people.”

“Phew,” he sighs. “That’s good. Sorry, I just heard that’s what you did.”

“That’s weird,” it says matter-of-factly.

“Yeah. I guess so.”

Amgis glances at the bathroom door. Still slightly on edge despite what his reflection has said.

“Well, it was nice meeting you,” he shuffles towards the door. “Or me? Or… who cares?” He pushes the door. Ready to make his exit.

“Wait!” his reflection says, desperation tinging its voice. On the other side of the mirror, its hand presses against it. If Amgis looks, he probably would have left without another word, thinking that it is trying to claw its way onto his side. But, shockingly, he waits for the reflection to say what it wants to say.

“What’s your name?”

Amgis is silent for a few moments. Probably deliberating whether he should tell it or not.

“It’s Amgis. Amgis Elam.”

His reflection smiles happily.

“Sorry. I have to go now.”

Amgis fully pushes the door open.

“Bye, Amgis! Please come aga—”

The door shuts and silence returns to the bathroom once again. With no reflection of a living person in the mirror, it can not speak as it was moments ago with Amgis. Who is probably thinking of never returning again as he makes his way to his next class. The next-period bell currently ringing.

Never has an interaction with the mirror occurred like the one today. Every student has always run out immediately when seeing their reflection move and speak freely. Maybe… Just maybe this will ruin the tranquil setting that this bathroom possesses. Except, there should be nothing to worry about because no one has ever returned to this bathroom after entering it once.

You’ve got to be kidding!

The next day, Amgis eats the same school cafeteria food and comes barreling into the bathroom with a mission.

"Why can't I stop eating that stuff?" he mumbles to himself.

“Hey, Amgis! I'm glad you’re back. We should talk some more.”

“Hi. Yeah. One sec.”

Amgis enters the stall and unleashes another hailstorm.
