Ozlo The Slow
Forging Is Life!

Forging Is Life!

Burgin stood behind Ozlo coaching him on his task. "Focus, do your best to hit ONLY the copper, bend it, mold it, shape. Learn how it can be worked and soon enough I'll have you work it warm."

Warm?" Ozlo replied?

Gesturing to the forge, Burgin said. "We'll heat it up lad and then you can really start forging."

"Ahh... Ok." Ozlo slowly responded.

Taking one of his trademark deep sighs, Burgin addressed Ozlo. "What's the matter lad, you don't sound all that excited."

Ozlo turns around to look at Burgin and says. "Well, it's just beating metal into shape right? That's what forging is."

Burgins prominent forehead vein starts to pulse and inflate into a steady rhythm. And he responds in a quiet, tight voice. "NO... No it is NOT."

"Oh..."

A gleam filled Burgins eyes before he gestured to around the room while addressing Ozlo. "Forging is an art, a science, it's... It's life."

Interrupting Burgin, Ozlo asked. "Forging is life?"

Calming down, Burgin took a long look at Ozlo. "That was a metaphor, you know what a metaphor is lad?"

"No..."

Thrown off course, Burgin starts to sputter before he calms down enough to explain. "When you say something but you really mean something else."

Attempting to process what his master said, Ozlo responds with. "Mother Patricia says you shouldn't lie."

"I... For once Mother Patricia was right, you shouldn't lie. But I'm not lying, I'm... Bah, forget it. Just don't take forging lightly, it's your livelihood after all. Soon enough you'll look back on this and realize how ignorant you were."

"Ignorant?" Ozlo asked.

"Yes, ignorant. It's someone who doesn't know something."

"Oh... I don't know a lot of things."

"Yes lad, and you are ignorant. Of forging and I'm sure many, many things... As am I. I don't claim to know it all boy, just enough to get by. And I make it a point to learn something new each day, no matter how small. Because like my Da used to say, you either learn or you die."

"Oh... So I need to learn or I'll die."

"I... Sure. If that's what you took from this then sure, get busy learning son. Get busy learning..."
