Mikael seeing Freya again awakened his old self when he was a father who cared for his children before he learned of the betrayal of his wife.
He always knew deep down there was a reason he hated Niklaus and once he discovered what that reason was, in his rage he slaughtered the wolves and forced his traitorous wife to chain that side of the abomination she made with them.
Later when Niklaus killed his wife and placed the blame on him, alienating his other children from him, he grew insane and wanted nothing more than to end him, but he always escaped with the help of his naive siblings.
He later failed to finish him when he was betrayed by the Salvatore's who he made a deal with, but that wasn't what got him killed, he hated to admit it, but he did underestimate how much stronger Niklaus got after unlocking his hybrid side, while still weaker then Mikael, his strength did bring him closer to it, that combined with the betrayal sealed his fate.
He got a second chance when Davina brought him back, but once again in his haste to finish Niklaus he was caught off guard when he was stabbed with an enchanted dagger he was hiding.
He managed to escape his predicament only to believe in Finn who then betrayed him and used him as a battery.
At this point, he was close to losing his mind and then he was revived by Freya, Freya the daughter he loved and doted on the most, his firstborn. An angel he desperately needed finally showed up and gave him hope for a family again. He was happy to find she felt the same way.
Then this stranger shows up and ruins their moment and says he's married to Rebekah, the other daughter he cared deeply for before Niklaus took her and brainwashed her, twisted her against him.
While he was still bloodthirsty for revenge, with Freya showing up, with his newfound hope showing up, he decided to take a new path, but he had to test this man, he had to know if he was good enough for his daughter, had to know who he was and the best way to do that is to fight him.
When he sparred with Niklaus, he was always a scared sniveling child, always on the verge of tears, it was clear to anyone who looked to see he was a worthless coward. Which he proved over the years with his constant running, backstabbing and manipulation, to get the things he wants.

Nevan and Mikael charged at each other both throwing a right fist at each other which ended up connecting in a loud enough boom that would surprise even the other Originals. Mikael was far tougher and stronger than a normal Original, he could hold his own against Nevan in his human form who had added strength value from the other werewolves running around the world.
Mikael was surprised to see him hold his own against a head-on clash like that, Niklaus the hybrid still fell short of his strength, he didn't know what or even who Nevan was to be able to match him.
Mikael confused by this asked- "What are you? There's no way you can be a vampire."
Nevan still grinning- "This isn't the time for talking father." he said throwing another punch.
Mikael's eye twitched when he heard him say father again- "Cheeky brat, let's see how long you can last." blocking the punch and sending a kick which pushed Nevan back even after he blocked it.

Nevan came running right back, they started trading blow after blow, some blocked others they tanked through the hits becoming less of a fight and more of a brawl as they both became more absorbed into it.
It's been a long time since either of them had a decent fight with someone so skilled. While Nevan had a wealth of experience, Mikael was a true fighting prodigy and was holding his own. Experience vs Talent a question for the ages some say.
Mikael was enjoying it far more than he would ever admit, he was a true warrior that rarely got to fight and showcase all he knew.
Mikael's strikes were becoming more smooth as the fight went on, with the rust leaving his bones, his attacks started to flow better, he managed to dodge a strike from Nevan and land another kick, this one was not blocked as it sent Nevan flying.
Nevan cursed himself- "Fuck me, he's way better than I thought he would be, that bastard Niklaus is one lucky bastard to survive against him, Mikael must've not been in his right mind to allow that weasel to get one over on him."
Nevan then heard him coming from behind, "Yeah, I was blinded by rage which allowed him to succeed with his tricks, to my shame." Mikael said as he struck down at Nevan who rolled away, resulting in a small crater from where he was before.
Mikael then laughed without realizing it- "Is that all you have boy? Don't tell me my daughter fell for someone so weak." he was truly enjoying himself.
Mikael was a tough opponent in his human form, but if he shifted he would be an ant, but that would mean he was scared to face him, it would be like running away. He also didn't want to have Mikael be put off by him should he find out before they even got better acquainted.
Nevan charged him again where they started trading blows, trees around them crashing down as moves dodged took them out.
Mikael was finding himself hard pressed now after his last quip, thinking he must have angered him.
Nevan was turning more serious, no way was he going to lose to someone so much younger than him, no matter how much of prodigy or skilled he was.
Most of their blows now were fist to fist, leg to leg as they found themselves equally matched. Nevan knew he would win this if it continued too long since his stamina is better, he didn't want to win that way.
He made his move when the next strike came, he pulled his fist back as they were about to connect and sent a kick catching Mikael off guard from the change of rhythm. Mikael flew back through a few trees before a big one stopped him.
Mikael looked around to find his opponent who he knew would follow up, but he didn't expect Nevan to come from the air as he landed a heavy two-handed dunk blow causing a big crater with Mikael stuck in the ground in the middle of it.
Nevan finally took a breather as he climbed out of the crater and sat on the edge waiting for Mikael to make his way out of the hole he now found himself in.
Nevan- "That's one of your weaknesses, all human changed supernatural seem to develop this weakness, you all limit yourselves to human concepts when doing things, you're no longer human, you should open yourself up to do more, be more, you didn't even expect me to jump up and come from the air.
Not to mention with our strength we could pick up anything and start throwing it like a missile towards our enemies, even other vampires would not be immune to a hand-tossed rock at full strength from us."
Mikael making his way out looked up to him sitting on the edge and smirked- "I see your point, well I can at least say Rebekah choose wisely with you."
Nevan grinned- "I'll be talking to her, I would love for you two to makeup, I'm sure she'll be more open to it after breaking away from Klaus."
Mikael stiffened- "Sure we'll see, I still need to settle things with that little bastard though, she may not like that."
Nevan simply waved it away- "Psh, don't worry about it, I've been slowly opening her eyes to what she already knows about Niklaus, while I can't say she will be completely fine about his death, I can say she won't take it that hard anymore."
Mikael grinned hearing this- "Yes well this has been interesting, to say the least, but I have to get back to my Freya, next time you have to tell me what you are." making his way out the crater getting ready to leave.
Nevan- "Hopefully you don't hate me when you find out, keep in mind that I'll love to help you become stronger should you wish it, a war is coming from creatures you never bothered to notice before and if you want to keep your loved ones safe, you'll need all the strength you can get."
Mikael- "I'll keep that in mind." zooming off.
