The independent marine regiment is a experimental new force type for the commonwealth marine corp. The theory behind it being to have a small, easily deployable from orbit force that can take minor objectives on a planet or secure landing sites in low conflict areas to allow the main force to safely land. They also have a secondary use as a small garrison force on various kinds of planets, usually frontier planets with or without atmospheres. The force is highly mechanised, making use of light APCs and small utility vehicles to maintain their air deploy-ability.

While the unification war saw a return to division centric operations on the main fronts, smaller, easier to transport and faster to manoeuvrer brigades were still valuable. They've now become especially useful with the new logistical demands of interplanetary warfare, which requires large numbers of transports to be assigned even just for peace time deployments on other planets. Environments that Brigades are better suited for than divisions.

The brigade is highly versatile and not at all lacking in firepower. The combined arms companies are similar to that of US army Armour Company Teams with the HQ mounted in MBTs, two tank platoons, a infantry platoon mounted in IFVs along with integrated logistics, engineer and fire support elements all included. The brigade also has good reconnaissance capabilities: firstly it had with two scout companies, one equipped with Striker wheeled light tanks and the other in Panther APCs. Secondly it has a UAV company with catapult launched, fixed wing UAVs. And lastly it has it's own intelligence company for collecting signals intelligence, as well as collating and processing all battlefield intelligence, for the brigade and battalion commanders.

This final brigade template was found in the inbox of a certain officer after it was rejected by the army on "numerous" grounds.
