As we reached the city Dan and Lizz guided me towards the Liberty association, better known as the adventurers guild, however, before that they made it clear that I should never, under any circumstances reveal my origins since bad people and all that. I readily took in their advice realizing how foolish I had been a while back, but at least I was glad that I had given that info to them instead of some evil dude or mam. Going back to the topic of the association, to tell the truth, I was somewhat surprised by how closely it resembled the ones you find in games and light novels, not that I am complaining though. They told me that all things considered it's best for me to get registered with them. Since I don't have any kind of identification I can use the membership card as one, not to mention that it is the easiest way to get income albeit not the safest. I simply accepted their proposal since simply being able to put food on the table and having a place to sleep is good enough for the time being.
Entering the guild a few things caught my attention. On the right, there was what is clearly a reception as there were three lines of people waiting for their turn. On the left, there was what looked like a bar or maybe a cafeteria, it was hard to tell due to the amount of alcohol that could be seen lying around. In the middle, there were multiple tables, most of them with people drinking or looking through papers. And finally, on the wall at the back multiple boards with papers attached to them were displayed with people examining them. It was a rather charming place filled with laughter and some shouting from the drunken people. I finally snapped out of my dazed state as Lizz shook her hand in from of my face, I quickly apologized and followed them to one of the waiting lines.
It didn't take too long before it was our turn, Dan handed the lady in front of him a bag filled with something and received what I can only guess was his payment. Next, it was my turn, Dan and Lizz explained my circumstances, of course, making a fake backstory on the spot, and helped me with the registering process. It was fairly simple, I had to fill in some information like my age and quote on quote class, which I did not possess. Thankfully it wasn't strictly needed but the receptionist did tell me that as soon as I get one I should come back to update the information, next I had to prick myself with a needle since a drop of blood was needed. Perhaps because she saw my uneasiness, she explained that the needle was never used more than once and after its use, it gets disposed of to prevent diseases spreading. I wonder if that was a normal occurrence because that was exactly what I was worried about, either way, after resolving myself to do it and a few deep breaths, I did. Have I told you before how much I hate to feel pain? it wasn't that painful but that didn't make it any better.
Finally, after everything was done I received my guild card, in it, there was some information displayed, most of which was the one I wrote in the paper just a while back. It also had a picture of myself and what I can only guess was my rank. I wasn't disappointed, I swear I was not, but I couldn't stop myself from sighing after looking at my rank, which was, you guessed it F. The receptionist explained that all adventurers start at F rank with very few exceptions, that didn't make me feel any better either way. Dan was a C ranked adventurer as for Lizz she was a D+ rank, and as I heard that a question came to mind, was I in a D to C ranked area? the answer was simple, of course not. They were actually taking small quests to relax after having taken a hard one. To tell the truth, I didn't know how I should feel about that, for one I am kinda sad to think that the monsters that were avoiding me were stupidly weak, on the other hand, I am glad that was the case or my life could have been at risk. All in all, I can't complain.
After I had finished my registration Dan and Lizz left saying their goodbyes, I had hoped for them to keep me company for a little longer but it can't be helped I guess. So I decided to take a simple quest to check how poorly I would perform. I am not being a pessimist it's just reality, you can't expect me to simply become some kind of hero after less than a day of coming here, can you? I sighed and looked at the quests ranked F, most of them were to gather herbs and a few were to kill does weird rabbits, they are called horned rabbits now that I read it, go figures, Either way, I decided to pick one of those. After checking in the counter they gave me the rest of the details, I have to bring back the horns nothing else that's the request, ten of them and I would be done, it can't be that hard, can it?
A case of content theft: this narrative is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.
I promised myself a long time ago I would not regret any of my decisions and I still don't but for sure I have screwed up a few times in my life, for example getting ran over but I have done it once more. I ran with all the strength of my legs from those damned rabbits after I attacked the first one it emitted a horrible screeching sound and before I knew it this f*ckers were chasing while trying to impale me. I hate exercising and now I am having to go at a full sprint for my life, it angers me to no end that these little sh*ts are doing this to me. I kept running for a little longer before a completely lost it, I was hoping they would stop their chase after a while but it was no use and now I am completely pissed. I turned around stopping on my tracks, unsheathing my short sword, swinging it with all my might at the nearest rabbit causing it to be cut in half but that did not matter to me, as of now I am bloodthirsty. I kept swinging and killing while doing my best to dodge, it goes without saying that I got hit a few times, thankfully the cuts were shallow but that did not make it any less painful. At this point, I only wanted to make minced meat of this a*sholes, and that's exactly what I did, hell I even managed to grab one by the horn and slam it against one of its comrades. I could feel a grin creeping up my lips, this was fun.
After a while, I calmed down, while looking around I came to the realization I might have gone a little too far. There were more than ten no, maybe twenty rabbit corpses on the ground, add or subtract a few since their guts and flesh were all around the place making it difficult to count. I felt nauseous by the picture I had just painted, and after puking a little I steeled my resolve and started picking up the horns. It was kinda hard to believe I had done something like this, but the memory was all too fresh in my head for me to even try and deny it. Only God knows what came over me. Either way, as I was picking up the horns one caught my attention, it was very different from the others now that I properly look at it, unlike the others that look as if they are made of bone this one looked like a jewel. I facepalmed so hard I think I shook my brain a little, the reason was that for sure this one was special moreover this one was the first one I attacked and I am more than certain it was some kind of leader. I groaned at my stupidity or bad luck, after letting a large sigh escape me I simply stood up, there was no use in crying over spilt milk either way.
As I walked to the guild people kept on looking at me with wary eyes, even the guards at the entrance pointed their weapons at me before I showed them my guild card. I guess it can't be helped, I was covered head to toe with blood, most of it had already dried since it belonged to those pests the rest was mine, just thinking about it makes me angry. I calmed myself down before entering the guild were even more wary-looks were directed at me, I sighed and went in line to wait. After a minute or two, it was my turn, and the receptionist from before looked at me with a worried look,
"are you alright?"
Those were her words as I tried my best to hide how stupidly tired I was. I simply said not to worry and handed her the bag and the request paper, she checked the contents and suddenly her eyes went wide. She looked at me and back at the bag in rapid succession before pulling out the horn that looked like a jewel while asking me if I knew what it was to which I nonchalantly said no. To tell the truth, I was too tired to care at this point, I simply wanted to get paid rent a room and take a bath, that was all that filled my mind at the moment. But things wouldn't go my way as she handed the horn to what I can only assume was her co-worker while telling her to hand it to the guild master, and at that point, I knew I f*cked up.
A moment after the co-worker left the receptionist asked me to wait and less than a minute later I was asked to follow the guild master's assistant, which I did, it's not like I had any other option, how troublesome. As I walked behind the assistant I could feel my nerves going wild, but I simply calmed myself down, there was no need to worry because when you worry you lose, that is my catchphrase. As we finally reached the end of the hallway we stood up in front of a large mahogany door, I am lying, it's just a nicely carved wooden door but it is indeed large nonetheless. The assistant knocked on the door a few times before a voice from inside urged us to go in. As the door opened my heart skipped a beat as I saw a large gorilla sitting behind a desk, wait, my bad it's not a gorilla but a large scary woman.
