“Yes, yes!” Nate shot his hand up in excitement, his face bearing with enthusen,
“Can he run?” Natalie asked Brian in a low voice, a frown creasing her forehead with concern,
“He’ll have us by his side,” Brian replied, glancing at Nate reassuringly, Exclusive content © by Nô(v)el/Dr/ama.Org.
His son was his secret weapon.
“Isn’t it harder with three people?” Natalie’s gaze shifted to the track, where every other per comprised
a single parent and child, and no trios were in sight.
Brian didn’t reply. Instead, he lifted Nate and headed toward the spot designated by the teacher,
Confused but curious, Natalie followed.
Upon reaching the teacher, Brian asked lightly, “Could we get an extra elastic band, please?”
Nate handed one to Natalie, and as she watched Brian kneel to tie the bands, the penny dropped. The
plan was for Nate to stand on the backs of their feet so he wouldn’t have to run, and they would ensure
his moves were in sync to avoid straining any injuries.
Understanding the strategy, Natalie knelt to untie her and Nate’s shoelaces but struggled with the
unfamiliar task. Just as she was about to ask for the teacher’s assistance, Brian had already finished
one side and reached out to take over from her fumbling fingers.
As their hands touched, the warmth of his palm met her hand back, sending a jolt through her as if
she’d touched a live wire. She instinctively tried to pull away, but Brian’s hand firmly held hers in place.
“Watch,” he said after a pause, looking up at her. His voice was soft, almost intimate.
Then, enveloping her hand in his, he guided her fingers as they continued to tie the shoelaces together.
Natalie watched their intertwined hands, feeling lost as he moved her fingers seamlessly. His palm felt
hotter by the second, the heat unsettling her in a way she couldn’t explain.
Meanwhile, Nate squished between them and had no choice but to sit on the track, watching the two
adults so focused on each other’s movements.
“Mommy is so pretty,” Nate thought. Even with her hair randomly tied back in a ponytail, she
outshone the other women. He noticed the way Daddy looked at her the eyes staring

After the field day events ended, Brian and Natalie joined Nate for a meal in the school cafetería. By
then, it was already afternoon.
As the flurry of parents and their children began to thin out. Natale’s gaze landed onto Brian standing in
the hallway. He was engrossed in a phone call outside, talking to someone beyond her recognition.
That morning, Madelyn had mentioned going abroad with Brian, and Natalie guessed the might be
apologizing to Madelyn over the phone.
“I’ve finished,” Nate murmured against Natalie, his mouth full with the last bite of his meall giving her a
charming, muffled smile.
