Wind of Change

The Misfits Academy. An institution famed for raising Misfits that conquer dungeon outbreaks, maintaining the shadow of the old world.

It has become the ultimate goal for every Misfits in the entire continent. Just entering the academy is enough to be seen as someone so unattainable, fundamentally different from the rest of the humans. That’s how coming to the academy changes someone. They all get arrogant, thinking that everyone else is beneath them.

The students in the past, the early generations prior to the establishment of the academy, are thoroughly disciplined by their households. They know the importance of humility and discipline, and above all else, unity. Those traits are thought to be carried out by the current generation of students, however, it died away.

Nowadays, the students in the academy merely see the institution as a matchmaking event that would change their lives.

Of course, there are some who are more focused on exterminating the monsters that came out of the dungeons. Unfortunately, those kinds of people are only a handful, if not, rare. Except for those who come from the ruined world Agartha.

Majority of the students in the academy are carried by their bloodlines without having gone through intense training and the academy cannot impose such individuals to go through the training as it is not mandatory.

I, Rad Fernek, had seen these people ruin the academy for years ever since I started working as a registrar. I have always raised this concern to my superiors, however, it fell on deaf ears.

With a single glance, me and all the others who believed that the academy has slowly started to deteriorate after the golden age of the academy. Since then, only a handful of graduates have appeared each year. Something that is very hard to swallow considering the fact that this institution is supposed to maintain the peaceful life of the citizens of this kingdom. And yet, only a few of them are fulfilling that duty.

SIGH! I can’t believe I’ll continue dealing with this my whole life. Just looking at their elated faces pisses me off!

“Please don’t show them that kind of face, Rad,” the person beside me said. “You don’t want that person mouthing off again,” she added,

Ah, yes. How could I ever forget about that part?

“Fine…” I replied, fixing the expression on my face to look as welcoming as it should be. “I hope this ends soon,” I muttered to myself.

All we ever do is face the new students and take care of their registrations. Some of them are rude to even demand us to hurry with the paperwork. I’m not a very patient person but thanks to my co-worker, I was able to get through most situations.

The registration lasted until late in the afternoon, and we are wrapping everything up and calling it a day.

“This is too tiresooooomee…” I shrank on my chair.

My butt had gone sore after so many hours of sitting there doing paperwork. Honestly, I think our supervisor is working us to the bone too much. We didn’t even get the chance to eat lunch because of the insane number of new students. Just because we're Misfits doesn’t mean we can just skip meals! This is tyranny! tyranny , I say!

“It’s just today. After this, we have a lot of free time,” she said, smilingly.

I couldn’t even bring myself to smile at her words. I can’t believe someone like her is really dedicated to this job. She is too hard on herself. She doesn’t need to push herself like this when in the future, the students she welcomes will look down on her.

Remembering the arrogant look on their faces pisses me off as it has been a norm from the recent years.

“I guess you’re right…” I agreed.

Just as we are about to wrap things up, a person came into view from the corner of my eye.

He’s wearing rather simple clothing for a noble. Compared to the ones who came here to register earlier, he looks like a peasant that just lost his way. However, the aura he gives off is more noble in contrast to those who came before him.

Miss Magenta and I just stared at him, blankly.

“Hello… I was told to head here to register..” he spoke softly,

“Yes, you came to the right place.” I replied.

If you stumble upon this narrative on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

“Thank goodness, I thought I wasn’t going to make it considering how late in the afternoon it already is.”

“Hmmm, we are just about to wrap things up here but what is another registration? Please give me your papers and I’ll process it right away.”

“I’m sorry for the inconvenience I caused… thank you very much..”

He did so and gave me the papers needed for registration when all of a sudden, I heard Miss Magenta gasping as if she had seen something horrifying.

“What’s the matter?” I asked her.

Rather than answering me, she asked the newcomer instead.

“Why do you wear a blindfold?”

Confused by her inquiry, I turned to the newcomer. By then, I was also caught off guard. I didn’t even realize he was wearing a blindfold the entire time. I might have missed it because of his long black hair but now that I got a closer look, he really is wearing a blindfold, and a black one too!

“That’s because I’m blind. Does that trouble you?”

We dropped our jaws, literally. He was blind and yet he was able to walk properly and find us? This guy must be kidding.

“Not at all… it’s just that…”

As if sensing our disbelief, he took his blindfold off and showed us his pale white pupils, confirming his claim.

“I usually get this kind of reaction a lot, so I guess I just have to prove it like I do all the time.”

People wouldn’t usually like revealing something like that despite being obvious. There isn’t a written rule in life that you should share everything, after all. And for him to be casually sharing this means he doesn’t mind at all.

“Sorry for this..” I muttered,

“Not at all. I’m used to this.”

He put his blindfold back on and I went back to finish the process of his registration. However, Miss Magenta gasped again for the second time.

I get it. It sure is surprisingly confusing how he is able to do things normally despite being blind. I wanted to tell her off since she is also delaying our work. But just as I was about to tell her that, my eyes widened as soon as I turned to her direction.

Her mouth is wide open as if she is about to swallow something big, and I can’t help but react in a similar manner. After all, this is the first time we are seeing something that’s on her hands. She lifted a black card, holding it nervously yet careful not to drop it accidentally.

“What the hell?”

That’s literally the first thing that came out of my mouth. And I’m sure that’s the same thing that’s on MIss Magenta’s mind right now.

“We need to call the supervisor here….” she suggested.

I wasn’t against her idea, so I nodded my head.

With the appearance of a black card, things have turned a bit complicated. To put it simply, it wasn’t within the scope of our field anymore.

What’s more surprising is that, how is this blind person worthy of a black card?

“Is there something wrong?”

Am I staring at an actual legend in the future?

Still shocked from the sudden turn of events, I wasn’t able to respond to him. In the end, I reassured him that there’s nothing wrong and just offered him a seat since it would take a long time before Miss Magenta came back. But in just mere minutes, she came back. Not with our supervisor but the most powerful person in the entire academy itself, the headmaster.

The headmaster came running towards our office and it isn’t an exaggeration to say that he is quite shocked as well.

“Is this him?” the headmaster asked,

“Yes…” I nodded in response and handed over the black card to the headmaster.

The headmaster looked at him briefly.

“Please come with me,” he said.

“What about my papers?”

“My staff will take care of that, don’t worry.” the headmaster, invited, extending his right hand.

Miss Magenta and I were both very surprised, however, we chose to keep our expressions in check in the presence of the esteemed headmaster.

This is the first time we have seen the headmaster invite a student in all the years we’ve worked in this institution. The headmaster who is usually aloof and strict is inviting someone, especially a student, with a welcoming look on his face as if he is seeing an acquaintance after a long time.

The student looked like he realized the identity of the person inviting him, and followed the headmaster.

As they walked away, with the headmaster leading the way, Miss Magenta and I could not help but be taken aback. We couldn’t believe that it actually happened. And just as we are about to talk about what just happened, I heard a voice in my head.

“Not a word about this to anyone.”

I assumed Miss Magenta heard the same thing as she reflexively turned to look at the headmaster just as I did. The headmaster gave us a sharp gaze and considering that it was an order from the very person we work for, we nodded. Swearing not to speak of it to anyone unless he orders us to do so.

“What a day….” I let out a sigh.

“I know, right? I mean, I didn’t expect this day to be very eventful.” Miss Magenta added.

I couldn’t agree more. I thought my day would just end up with me throwing myself in the bath and then getting a relaxing drink. But for it to end up with me getting something to think about, is more like a reward after a tiresome day of work.

Without uttering another word, we went back to work and finished the last registration for the special student in the academy.

“Jakob Reavers…. Huh? I wonder what would happen.” I said to myself, staring at his papers.

I thought this year would be the same as the recent years but it turned out to be different. I just hope that this will start the change for the academy after long years of becoming stagnant.
