The Guest (2)

While still wondering about Jakob’s words that night, I failed to notice that we had already arrived at our destination.

“Master, we have arrived. Master?”

Arnod called out. The worried look on his face is still the same. He would always wear a troubled expression whenever I didn't respond to him. Well, at least I have someone I trust completely like Jakob.

I climbed down the carriage and was immediately greeted by the post’s supervisor upon arrival. Perhaps they were expecting me to come for some reason? His men did assault Jakob but failed miserably. Still, I can’t let things like that slide so easily.

“Good day, Master Valter. What brings you to this filthy place?” He said as he bowed his head lightly.

The supervisor is clearly bothered by my presence. He is aware of his men’s mistake. I really want to punish them immediately, but I have to listen to them first. I don’t want to trail off from my original objective after all.

“Good day to you as well, Supervisor Kolun. I have things to discuss with you. This is not an appropriate place, so why don’t we head inside for now?” I told him and he immediately led the way and even opened the door faster than Arnod.

His swift movements, was it out of fear of me? No matter what it is, it will only get worse from here on. So steel yourself. Trying to harm my junior, though your men utterly failed, can still be seen as a hostile action against me.

Jakob is someone I considered my family, my family created under our master. And to think that they even dared to swing their swords at my family is an unforgivable act.

I clenched my fist and kept myself calm. From the corner of my eyes, I saw a glimpse of Arnod’s fearful expression. Perhaps, I let my murderous intent slip even a little? For Arnod to wear such an expression only means that I was not able to hide my displeasure.

“Please calm yourself, master. Please remember that this post is under the influence of the kingdom. Unless they have done something unforgivable in the eyes of his highness, the king, we cannot act rashly.”

Seeing me in that state is not something that anyone can do. People are aware of how things can get troublesome when I get angry. Though it rarely happens, they are fully aware of my temper.

It’s best to hey Arnod’s advice for now.

“Don’t worry, I am calm.” I told him to give him a sense of ease but it doesn’t look like I convinced him, though?

We arrived inside the supervisor’s office and immediately got seated. While Supervisor Kolun is busy preparing something to offer us, I noticed how little the office has changed since the last time I visited.

"Looks like this place is still the same."

I pointed out. And the moment I did, the supervisor's face somehow looked relieved. He must have thought that I was trying to ease the tension. But that is far from what I intended to do.

“I take that as a compliment. After all, I cannot stay in this position forever. Someday, someone will take this position away as well as this room. If that happens, I want to leave with peace.”

I already expected he’d say that. Well, from first glance, one can say that he is just too lazy to decorate his office. But if you think about how the world is changing, you can immediately tell how he puts no effort in such things when it comes to decorating his office. Well, the man’s got a point.

“I only have Amisian Black Tea, Master Valter. Will you be okay with that or should I get something else?” He asked, worriedly.

“It’s fine for me, Supervisor Kolun. There is no need to trouble yourself more than you have to.” I told him.

He immediately nodded and made tea. Arnod checked it before it was served before me and concluded it’s safe.

Now that we are sitting in front of each other, the uneasiness on Supervisor Kolun’s face is now laid bare. He knows the reason for my sudden appearance. Since he is already aware of my intentions, I no longer need to take my time.

“Supervisor Kolun, I trust that you already have an idea for my sudden visit.” I said coldly, trying to intimidate him with my serious expression.

In response to me, his body shook slightly and he began shivering as if he was standing under the rain for a long time. I waited for his response, but he didn't seem to find the right words to say so I continued.

“Someone holding an insignia that belonged to my family was assaulted. Even if it is an old insignia, it is still an unpardonable act in my eyes. Someone holding an insignia that was discarded and replaced 20 years ago only means that person is someone trusted by my family. Furthermore, I was the one who had given that person the insignia. So it greatly angers me to have learned that someone I greatly value was treated poorly.”

I rested my back on the sofa and waited for his response. And still, nothing came out of his mouth as he continued to lock his gaze on the floor.

“Keeping quiet about it will not solve anything, Supervisor Kolun. You know it fully well. If it was another house, not only your men, you will also most likely get dragged into it. Thankfully enough that person did not raise any complaints or else I would have razed this post to dust myself. So be grateful for my tolerance.”

Supervisor Kolun stood from his seat and immediately fell to his knees.

“Please allow me to apologize in their stead, Master Valter! They have only been here for 4 months, they don’t know any better! I will take care of this and discipline them myself! I will make sure to straighten them up!” He begged on his knees.

I do not enjoy seeing such a sight as I am mostly considerate to all people. Because of the stupid actions of his underlings, he is kneeling in front of me. Such a pitiful sight especially for a person in this position.

“I understand, Supervisor Kolun. You may go back to your seat. I, for one, do not enjoy that gesture. I already told you that I will not escalate this matter any longer. However, for me to completely forget this ever happened. I want you to bring those guards to me.” I told him.

It was an order. Supervisor Kolun looked a bit hesitant but still dragged his feet towards the door and stopped.

“May I take your word that you will not harm any of them, Master Valter?” He asked worriedly.

“That is what I intend to do.”

“Then please excuse me. I will bring them all in an instant. I ask for your patience.”

With that reassurance, Supervisor Kolun bowed slightly before walking out of the room. A few moments later, numerous guards whom I have not seen often walked into the room in one line. Just by looking at their faces, I can immediately tell they are guilty.

“I have brought them as you requested, Master Valter.”
