Chapter 03a-Education is good for you.. even if it hurts

It has been 5 years since I came to be here in this world, thankfully I managed to learn the language and finally know my own name “Marcus”. Things have been running smoothly so far even if I don’t know what will happen in the future, my education has been very important to the family so far. Alongside teaching me my basic three R’s ’spifff like that naming make sense’ the head maid teaches basic ‘self defense’, I say ‘self defense’ if she did not include some rather nasty moves. Yo I should not be old enough to know that hitting there hurts, if I ever see her use those moves seriously then I can only send off whoever is the victim since they won’t be having their proof of manhood around in proper shape afterwards...... Well that repressed memory later she also taught some sweeps, kicks, punches, and elbow blows to the rest of the household both family and servant. I don’t think this is the usual thing but then again what is the point of my hash mash of knowledge from back before. I am only glad I am not old enough yet to seriously learn this though I think she is really trying to make this ingrained in me beforehand, right back on point now. Besides this I am having to get a lot of exercise and basic forest craft survival. Besides these lessons I am given a small pony to take care of, properly feeding her and brushing her down along with some medical care. Besides taking care of her I also am learning the basics of how to ride it. How to place on and use tackles, bridles, saddles, bits, and stirrups. Beside their use I have to learn how to maintain them, keeping them properly cleaned and stored. Perhaps I will name the pony Eurus, once she grows older I can learn how to fight on her back.

Any time spent not training is in study though at least I get a bit of free choice now that. I have had the time to be able to organize and find the most important information now though even then it is a bit of a long list and not much history. History is something I avoid ever since I saw a crazy lizard preaching to the guards of the manor, I think I learned enough that I won’t fail miserably in the future.

The tale has been illicitly lifted; should you spot it on Amazon, report the violation.

The nobility of this world in general is split between upper and lower nobility with most others being stuck as commoners though unless you are a true peasant there are methods of advancement to the bottom half of nobility. Many heads of merchant families can become Patriarchs or even Grand Patriarch and many are gentleman at least. Experienced elite soldiers can become knights and rare cases if they have leadership can go up the military ranks and be granted viceroy or even baron nobility. Peasants who perform some valuable act can become gentleman and those that do this multiple times can be granted patrician status, quite nice for former farmer joe. While this is somewhat of a feudal society with serfdom there is freedom of movement for peasants as long as someone fulfills the need farming quota for the family. Since there is some knowledge of nutrients and rudimentary crop rotation there are enough people to spare.

Anything higher is usually impossible except under special circumstances though my family is now even more absurd it seems. While I don’t want to be a plebeian but I doubt I am going to live a normal life even amongst the high nobility. While most sons or daughters do not inherit the family titles they are usually at least lower nobility, if they ever leave their homes unless they are useful then they tend to get eliminated quickly and their stuff looted so most don’t leave the umbrella. Those who survive separate for enough generations get to call themselves a new family or stay as a branch family depending on circumstances. Our family has historically been rather large comparatively even with the birth rates here and thanks to the history many leave to become adventurers or mercenary soldiers. In addition there are a number of branch families though none too close to the main as if they were close they would not have left. These families usually change a part of the family name and then lengthen it in order to distinguish the new family. Thankfully genealogy is not the most important thing in this family since we keep duplicates of records, one less thing to be forced to study I guess. Well this is only the first part of my required studies so best get to work now. I hope I don’t lose my eyesight like this.
