Chapter 42: Jenny and Robert pt2

Waking up in just his clothes in the dark with his hands tied behind his back, Robert was happy to feel his emergency toe ring wasn't discovered. Mellie had suggested it then laughed when he said he'd make a storage toe ring. Apparently this was a womans fad where she came from but he made one nonetheless. He could regrow toes with enough money, but hiding a decent storage item was clutch. Shuffling his foot out of his boot, he touched it with his finger and pulled out the knife with the heat rune. Gripping it by the hilt he turned the blade around facing his ropes burning and slicing through them, while burning his hands slightly. While breaking through his bonds he looked around at the stone walls surrounding him, and up at the looming hole above him. Judging from the soreness of his legs, he had pushed into the hole, and had just enough time to heal before he woke up. On that he was fortunate. "Jenny" he stage whispered as it echoed "Jenny jennyjennyjenny" around the stone hole. This was bad.

Grabbing his boot, he slipped his toe ring onto his pinkie and began his ascent. Casting Summon String, he attached it to the platform above the hole and holding on tightly he decreased the length of string needed until his hands slapped onto the ledge, pulling himself up. Huffing and puffing, he rolled himself of the cliff ledge and got up onto his knees looking around. Two doors were in the room. Seeing by the light of his knife two doors were in the room above the pit. One was black and one was red. Cracking the black door he peered through, the light blinding him briefly. On the other side of the door was a tunnel leading to a set of stairs leading up. He slipped into the hallway and began climbing the stairs carefully. Noticing that the stairs climbed up for a long ways, Robert summoned some emergency water and rations for the climb. According to his status he had been unconscious for almost a week. The pretty little foxgirl he left his master to save was missing. He heard something about a tower when he was passing out and this building only had one spire, and it was probably at the top of this neverending set of stairs. He could only hope. If not, this whole venture was just him throwing his life away for a pretty face. Just to play hero. He already had the runesmith class. He didn't need the silly title.

+1 Endurance!

As he climbed the 10th flight of stairs he could finally see the sky again. Approaching the 13th floor he could hear voices and he had to come to a full stop, listening.

"I can't believe they did it! We are gonna be so rich when we sell this information!" said the spy.

"Yes, the bidding wars will be quite special this evening. Who wouldn't toss a few hundred manastones at the chance of having real working wings. Yes. Each house will pay quite the price for this information. I'll cover the East district and you cover the West. Don't forget to mention the foxears. The mana they'll supply might be enough to grant a spell!" said the boss. Roberts ears perked up at the mention of foxears, but he had to quickly retreat back down the stairs and through 12th floor door to hide in the dark hallway as the voiced descended toward the 10th floor exit. Proceeding back up the stairs, he cracked the 13th floor door and began his journey down the empty hallway. He heard voices coming out of one of the doors, so he quickly ducked into a door on his right, and hid behind a barrel of rusty torture devices as they passed, and entered the room next door.

"- and the wings will be easily regrafted onto their back once we sever the..."

"beautiful maybe a fine lord will make her his mistress.."

"mumblemumblemumble"

And then they all laughed. Roberts face darkened. Rounding the corner, peering into the room he saw Jenny laying on a table, face down with large wyvern wings spread out on her back. He approached the three men, smiling over their project with his knife in his hand. Eyes widening one of the men poked at the other two gesturing to their new company. The magical surgeons that had caught him went through so many bodies, that they had become complacent and often completely forgot about thier merchandise, leaving them rotting in their cells. Having one escape their notice was like having a crab escape the pot. They were stupified yet still arrogant.

"Hello, it seems you are lost. I shall find you an escort." said the man with a wicked grin on his face.

Robert sneered at the fancy idiots and summoned string, wrapping the three men up like a spiders cocoon. Walking over to the table he took in what had happened to Jenny. Her earlobes had been cropped off, and a wyverns wings had been surgically melded onto her back. They seemed to be functional because they twitched and moved like arms as Robert tried to wake the sleeping beauty. Removing her from the IV drip, he summoned string to tailor her an outfit better than the rags they had on her and slung her over his back in a fireman carry. As he began descending to the 10th floor to find an exit, he weaved her a cloak for her to cover her severed ears and her wings. Feeling her breath on his neck, he felt alive again and with renewed vigor, he slipped them into a library. Approaching a window, he opened it and lowered a still knocked out Jenny onto a bush on the other side. Hearing yelling from the halls around him, he jumped from the window, landing on Jenny, finally waking her up with a scream. Slapping his hands on her mouth, she widened her eyes and began to cry as her wings flexed under her cape.

He grabbed her hand and they sprinted back into the forest, as he cast some string across the trees behind him. On foot and on horseback the castle erupted with people in search of the lost augment. Some of the house leaders had already paid for the information on the augment and knew how one of a kind it was. Crashing into the woods without a care, strings began decapitating the excited murderous persuers, thier heads dropping with a thwop, and thier bodies following with a thunk as their horses, now not being hassled, trotted off to graze. Robert and Jenny ran until they found a ledge they could hide under, and covered themselves with leaves, trying to stay awake and warm in eachothers trembling arms.
