Spells Stored for Casting: 4(Spb Lvl + IntMod)
Spell Mana Costs
Sera reads her status as she comes to consciousness, and excitement creeps into her mind in equal measure as the light pain of lying on a hard, cold stone floor. She pushes herself up, and feels as rested and ready as she ever has when she does so, the exhaustion and dizziness from the level-up fully gone now. It is replaced by the feeling of abilities she didn’t have before, and didn’t have any metric for understanding before. She can feel her mana now, owing to her status’s ‘18 mp’. Spell Storage also, is a thing she can ‘feel’, in the sense that she can tell she hasn’t stored anything, even without checking. Sera also has a sort of ‘tingly’ feeling in her entire body, not dissimilar to the way she feels when ‘frustrated’, except more distilled and focused in the muscles she uses in a fight.
Perhaps that is why so many powerful combat classes seek out careers like adventuring or mercenary work, to work out that tension. It makes some sense to her, actually, since it’s a simple, relatively harmless way of encouraging leveled individuals to seek out ways to actually use their levels. Regardless of what the case may be, she should definitely read all of the new parts of her status she can’t just feel.
Spellblade-Touch (Active)
You may cast spells with a range of touch through attacks, dealing normal damage and applying the effect of the spell.
This ability is the unique skill of the eponymous Spellblade class, and different ranges and types of spells will be added to it as you gain Spellblade levels.
Flash Cast-Self Target (Active)
You can cast spells that target yourself without interrupting your other actions.
She thinks that Flash Cast in particular provides not nearly enough explanation for what it is intended for, but considers that it’s probably the opposite of Vey’s Layered Augmentation. Instead of letting her apply buffs to herself all at once before a fight, Flash Cast is probably intended to let you apply the buffs as you need them during a fight, which is probably fairly useful. Given that she doesn’t have any stored spells to cast right now, that’s something to be tested later. For now, she dusts off the small amount of dirt from her clothes, and heads out to both find Vey and figure out how long she was unconscious for.
--
Vey looks at Sera as she enters the storeroom. More specifically, her aura. His only assumption is that she’s leveled up, because while the amount of that aura/potential hasn’t changed since the last time he really tried to look, it is most definitely a magical aura now, as opposed to whatever it was before. The amount of mana she has surrounding her may be drastically lower than his, but the fiery mantle of magical aura combined with that subtle non-caster aura underneath makes her aura seem more imposing than his own.
“I take it you-” Vey decides to stop as he sees Sera pick up speed walking towards him, and he decides to drop any attempt at productivity for the moment, and drops to a knee to accept her tackle/hug without falling over. The impact she makes as she wraps herself around his ribs and collar at jogging speed still puts him off-balance, but he manages to catch himself by returning her embrace. “Congratulations, Sera.”
“Mmmhmmmm!” Sera’s lack of a more verbose initial response is actually somewhat encouraging to Vey. He knows how much she’s been overworking herself towards achieving this, and if Vey had to guess, she’s feeling a bit- “I did it… I did… Can I just fall asleep on top of you for a bit? I’m not tired at all, but I just want to be with you right now…”
Vey doesn’t respond, but he does drop from a kneel to a proper sitting position on the floor, caring Sera down with him, until finally they are more or less half-laying half-sitting together on the stone floor. He starts stroking her back with his left arm, and silently commands the skeletons that he was properly equipping with weapons and armor to train by themselves for now. That done, he moves his other hand to the top of her head, and begins the process of running it through her hair, scratching behind her ears, and patting her alternatively, finding a large amount of enjoyment in the way she happily smiles and nuzzles him in return. He wonders for a moment when this became one of his favorite ‘fun’ activities, or when ‘fun’ became the sort of thing he cared about seeking, but the feeling of physical comfort in this arrangement is something Vey wants just as much as Sera does, even if the way they experience it is likely completely different. At some point the two managed to fully lay down, and Vey had begun just observing the way Sera drifts between being half-awake and asleep while still managing to continue their embrace.
“Sera, do you know how your magic works?” Vey finally manages to start asking the important questions after a full ten minutes of doing nothing but laying together on the admittedly rather uncomfortable stone floor. Her eyes open fully for the first time since they started, and he lets her go as she starts to pull away and sit up.
“Kind of… It’s not like your preparation, but I could probably use some of your spells, like [Fists of Stone].” Sera crosses her legs and waits for Vey to do the same before she continues. “I don’t need to have them written down, or anything like that, but I do ‘store’ them, I think. You said for you, it’s like a part of your mind is reserved for just magic, for me I think I store the spell information more literally in my body, and have to construct the spell circle and matrix off of instinct. That’s probably the difference between preparation and spontaneous casting.”
“That’s… I hadn’t even started theorizing on that, how are you so sure after just… a couple hours at most.” Vey does think her explanation would work, the sorcerer girl that he had ‘dissected’ after the fight with the adventurers didn’t have a spellbook, after all, and none of the adventurer’s packs had any sort of magical notes or research. Vey hears Sera say something, but is too lost in thought to register it at the moment. Sorcerers are spontaneous casters, so it would make sense they wouldn’t need a spellcraft skill, but the spellblade description had been implying an intelligence/charisma hybrid, so probably-
“Hey, didn’t you hear what I just said?” Sera taps his skull with her lift fist, reminding him that she is still sitting right in front of him. Vey shakes his head, and starts to pay more attention to his companion again. “I said I’m sure because I can just sort of feel it… Plus, my status says my stored spells are based on my intelligence, but my mp is broken down by charisma.”
“Do you want to try ‘storing’ a spell, then? You had those notes on [Mage Armor], would that work?” Vey asks, to an immediate shake of Sera’s head, answering in the negative.
“The research was definitely a good idea, but I think it works the other way around. I’d need to do the process I wrote down in real time while I cast, but store the spell some other way I haven’t figured out yet.” Sera’s answer makes some sense, in honesty, Vey hadn’t expected preparing a [Mage Armor] spell by the process Sera was making one seemed very difficult, but casting one that way would be easy, so giving her time to work it through on her own is probably the best course of action.
--
Sera sits back down at the table in the lab, with both of the swords she’s used previously before her, as well as two more swords with different designs as well. A [Mage Armor] spell is probably out of her reach before she has a little more experience using her new spellcraft and spellcasting abilities, but practicing her swordplay while she thinks of a simple enough spell for a starting point sounds like a good idea to her.
As she began practicing with the second longsword(it’s primary traits being a longer tang and hilt, thicker blade, and more prominent tapering), an idea for a first spell started to take shape in her mind. Practicing strikes that could best utilize Appendage Crusher and thinking about Vey’s [Fists of Stone] were the inspiration, and she started to work through how to make it actually work in her head. Unfortunately, she finds this longsword very uncomfortable to use with her favored style, so she abandons it and starts practicing with the next sword, a single edged Grosse Messer sword.
This sword too, doesn’t feel quite as ‘right’ as the bastard sword and longsword do, but not in quite the same way as the previous sword. Sera feels like she could get used to this one with enough practice, though she questions the practicality of training with three different swords, and abandons it in favor of the bastard sword and longsword once more. Once again in her proper comfort zone, the spell in her mind begins to take better shape. Using mana as a solid material for something like [Mage Armor] is certainly going to be her next spell, but using magic to increase her strength is more useful. [Fists of Stone] is half useless to her, though, since she fights with her sword, but the sheer bonus to strength it requires would make it worth it regardless, which is why Sera is starting to call her idea for her spell [Stonesword]. The concept is just to increase her strength as much as possible, but instead of granting her a slam attack, perhaps allowing her to deal bonus damage to joints and such instead.
After a good hour of concepting and theorycrafting, not to mention the training, she rests back down in her chair. She grabs a piece of paper from Vey’s stack of it, as well as some of the remaining ink, and a quill, and starts writing down her [Stonesword] spell. It takes her twice as long as she’s seen Vey do this sort of thing, but eventually she’s done it to a level she’s satisfied with. She doesn’t think she actually needs to write it down like this, but having it written down will make her feel better about it if it doesn’t work and she needs to tweak it.
Ok… system help: storing spells.
System Help
Subject; Storing Spells
Paladins, Spellblades, and similar hybrid stat casters store spells as opposed to preparing or knowing them. To store spells, they simply go through the full length process of manually casting a spell, which usually takes one hour per tier of the spell. After this, that spell will remain stored. If one attempts to store a spell while already having the maximum amount of spells stored, the oldest stored spell will be lost.
Sera reads over the message once, then twice, then inhales deeply. Ok… I have to spend a whole hour to store one tier one spell like this one… cool. Awesome. OK. You can do it Sera, just start now, and you’ll have it done by the time Vey gets back.
