Chapter 38 - Immortality

Kelsey stared at Thadius. "What do you mean you're going to need the boss core?"

Thadius leveled a serious stare at Kelsey. "There is a way to revert class advancements."

"Wait, what? As in resetting yourself to level 1?" Kelsey asked in shock.

Thadius shook his head. "No, that's not what I mean. Technically, that's possible too, but not what I'm talking about. I only know of this because of Claire, but there is an alchemical concoction that can force someone to revert back to their most recent advancement, allowing them to choose their classes again."

He paused and took in a deep breath. "There is one major downside, however."

Kelsey waited for him to continue, but he looked nervous about even bringing it up. "Spit it out Thad."

"Because you are abandoning your path, the classes you get to choose from will be... worse... A lot worse... Each of them will have 'Must have abandoned your path.' In their requirements, and the classes themselves will be substantially weaker."

Kelsey nodded her head as she considered his words. "Which is why you need the core. The core should theoretically bypass that requirement and give you a full class instead..."

Thadius smiled. "Exactly. At least, I hope so."

"So, why now? What made you decide to do this?" Kelsey asked seriously.

"The world needs another fighter, not an architect Kel. Claire is going to be an Immortal soon, and I know that I won't be able to stop her from joining up with you and putting herself in danger. It would be better if I were right there by her side, able to help out in whatever way I can. Plus, I'm not as scared as I once was. When I first arrived, I was terrified of getting hurt again; of losing my legs. I don't want to live in fear anymore..." Thadius paused and eyed Kelsey with a small grin.

"What did you say to me the day you saved those prisoners? 'What's the point of having power if you aren't going to use it to help people?'" Thadius asked. "I'm starting to understand what you mean by that."

"I've been living with my head in the sand for forty years. Simply wasting days, waiting for you to arrive, waiting for you to fix everything. I'm done. Time to take care of myself and really pay attention to what's happening in this world. I've been here for forty years, Kel, and it took you less than one to figure out that us being here was not an accident. I could have figured that out. I could have thought about it. But I didn't. Maybe because I was afraid of the answer." Thadius said dejectedly.

He shook his head in frustration. "Because you're right. It's the responsibility of those with power to help those without. I have power, I need to start using it."

Thadius straightened his back. "Ice boss, right?"

Kelsey was a little stunned by Thadius' revelation, but she nodded. "Yeah. Ice boss."

"Well, I've got some work to do then." He said turning around and walking towards the door.

Kelsey watched him leave; determination written plainly on his face.

He is going to freak out when he learns that I may have rediscovered the Mageblood ritual...

Hopping from one foot to the other, getting her blood flowing, Kelsey refocused on her objective. He has his job, I have mine.

The next ten days of Kelsey’s life were a constant test of patience. She continued fighting the drakes all day, every day, for the entire time. The only breaks she took were to sleep inside of one of the additional tents she brought with her.

She had gotten into a rhythm fighting against the drakes. She would start each fight with a dozen steel lances to pin the drakes to the ground. With them damaged, she would be able to fight them on somewhat equal terms with her melee weapons, ensuring that she raised the level of her vault, armory, and enhancement skills at the correct pace. At first, she struggled while fighting them. But with time, practice, and more than a few serious injuries, she slowly learned their patterns and began to fight them on equal footing with nothing but melee weapons and her teleportation.

Her skills all slowly leveled up to their max levels by the time she had reached level 241. That meant that for the last nine levels, she didn’t hold back anything. She dumped tens of thousands of mana into giant cones of blue flames that melted the drakes in seconds. The only negative to this tactic was that the cores were destroyed in the process. But she didn’t care as long as it helped her level more quickly.

On the 10th day, she killed her final drake and was greeted with the notification she had been waiting for since learning about immortality. In total it had taken 1247 Crystal Drakes for her to level from 214 all the way to 250.

She opened her vault, walked inside, then checked her notifications. She could stay in her vault for at least an hour or two, so she figured she may as well advance in private.

*ding*Magus has reached level 250 - 20 free stat points have been awarded!

She quickly distributed her new skill points and checked her next notification.

Kelsey was feeling very excited. She hadn’t had a new class or advancement in about a year. She had perfected her classes skills and become an expert on mana. Ahh which one shall I choose? The choices are endless. She thought sarcastically to herself, knowing instantly that she was going to be choosing the Magus class again.

Another instance of ‘You shall walk alone’, It's beginning to be a theme.

She looked over the other four options briefly. I guess these are alternate paths I could take based on how I used my Magus skills in the past 150 levels. It makes sense I suppose. The Immortal Scholar class is certainly interesting, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that I qualify for a path change, Thadius was able to change his path after all.

Also, which jackass considers me a minor deity? I bet it's Gregory, that guy adores me.

She was feeling ecstatic. She had made it to level 250 in a little over a year after arriving in Anoura. The eleven months she spent training in solitude were absolutely worth it, she realized. It would have been so much slower had I immediately come back here after selecting the class. The Magus class was so hard to learn, there’s no way I could have done it while also trying to stay alive in the middle of a fight.

After finishing her musings, she couldn’t help but smile as she mentally chose her only real option, the Immortal Magus class.

Thankfully, everything looked exactly as she expected it too. One interesting thing she noticed is that she officially regenerated her entire health pool every second now. She could go from death’s door to perfectly healthy in the time it would take for a normal person to say the word ‘banana’.

She looked down at her body, and investigated herself via her domain, but she didn’t look any different. She simply felt different.

Her mind was clearer, and she was thinking more sharply than ever before.

Is this just what becoming an Immortal feels like, or is this due to the skill Body of the Magus? I’ll need to ask Thadius. Feels damn good, that's for sure.

As she was sitting there contemplating the changes in her body, she saw the world around her begin to shift and change. That's when she remembered that she was sitting in her vault, which had just been upgraded to a full-on new dimension. She didn’t know what would happen if she stayed inside as the change occurred, but she was absolutely unwilling to find out.

She stepped outside of her vault and took a look around. Her domain now stretched for ten kilometers in every direction around her. She could see that there was no one nearby on the floor, but she also had some sort of intuition in the back of her mind that testing her new skills here would be okay.

Is that the Senses of the Magus skill?

As she thought of her domain, she went back and re-read the skills description. It had lost the line about being able to manipulate from anywhere within her domain. Her heart leapt into her throat and began beating quickly.

Why the hell did I lose that ability?

Before freaking out, she decided to test it by creating a lance around fifty meters away. It worked normally. Huh? She then tried to create a lance at the edge of her domain. That, sadly, did not work.

What is going on?

Kelsey spent the next 10 minutes or so testing her new domain. She quickly realized that the cutoff for creation was about 100 meters away, much smaller than her previous domain’s size. The more she tested the more frustrated she got. It didn’t really matter, as she basically never created further than a few dozen meters away from herself, but it was annoying that she lost the ability to do so.

Not that I would be able to…

That’s it... Control... Thadius said that as mana, and mana regeneration got higher that it became much harder to control. It's even more difficult to control at longer distances... All I need to do is practice, and I should regain the ability. Okay... I can live with that.

Kelsey wasn’t thrilled about this development, but she was still extremely excited to try the rest of her skills.

She prepared to begin testing. She tried to activate her armor, and realized that it was already active, and deactivating it did nothing. She also couldn’t even see that it was active. Even with her Magesight it didn't appear that she had any protection active.

Well, that’s interesting, I’ll need to test that out soon.

She then tried to activate Meditation, something that she had become very comfortable doing, but nothing happened. Damn, that is going to be one hard habit to break.

She then extended her hand, and without bothering to wait for it to charge, she released a cone of fire consuming the entirety of her mana regeneration. Even with no build up, it was slightly more powerful than the 3 - 4 seconds of charging flames she had been using on the drakes. The wind pressure caused by the intense flames began shattering the crystal formations that she was standing on. So, I could output a flame at this power, forever? She thought as she watched the cone of blue flames travel for over 200 meters before finally losing their energy and dying out.

She then created a few more objects that she was used to creating, like steel lances, elemental sabers, and a variety of other weapons. She found that not only were her creations now stronger, but she could also create them even faster.

Deciding to try one of her old classics, she began creating and launching telekinetic spears from her open palm. The difference was staggering. She was able to pour 55,000 mana per second into her creations, so creating them as fast as she possibly could, meant that she could create roughly 400 spears per second, each being charged with over 130 mana. These spears were so solid and strong that the moment they began moving, they instantly broke the sound barrier and traveled completely out of her domain before coming to rest somewhere far in the distance over ten kilometers away.

She did a few more minutes of testing and found that her skills were improved in every conceivable way. She was now able to output so much mana every second, that she was getting close to the maximum mana that she had the personal ability to control, which just reinforced her conclusion about her domain. The days of charging an attack for multiple seconds were likely over for the foreseeable future.

When someone advanced, it wasn't only that they got new skills, or new abilities. The quality of the Mage's mana improved too. What used to take 200,000 mana, would now only take her 50,000. It was something that was only obvious when comparing an advancement directly with a class before.

When she had become a Magus, she had no direct comparison to her class before since it was a completely different skillset. Now that her skills had simply upgraded, it was obvious.

Kelsey was of course curious about her skills and wanted to do a deep dive into how they had changed, but she was exhausted. She had spent the last ten days doing nothing but fighting. She wanted to go up to camp and sleep in a bed rather than a bed roll for a change. Although, as she examined her mental state, she realized she wasn’t tired. At least not physically. She had been quite tired before the advancement as she had been awake for over 30 hours, pushing for her advancement, but she realized that the feeling of tiredness was completely gone. She was now more mentally exhausted rather than physically.

She quickly read through her skill changes until she found the culprit. ‘The body of the Immortal Magus is infused with magic. It automatically sustains itself and improves the Immortal Magus’ body.’

So, sustains means I don’t need to sleep? Wait, am I even hungry or thirsty now? She thought as she explored her body's feelings. It turned out that no, she wasn’t hungry or thirsty.

That’s nice I guess, I certainly hope I can still eat, sleep, and drink even if I don’t need to. Is life even worth living if you can’t have a good meal after a long day?

Deciding to put off those questions for another time, she started making her way towards the door and then up to the camp. Time to go see Thadius and the others. I’m sure they’ll want to know all about the new changes.

The moment she opened the door leading to the staircase, her domain expanded and became large enough to cover the entirety of the base camp. She instantly realized that it was nighttime and everyone in camp was sleeping.

I guess my internal clock got pretty messed up while I was down there.

Kelsey was feeling pretty mentally tired, if not physically tired, after pushing herself for so long, so she decided to head to bed immediately. She entered her tent and fell face first down onto the soft mattress. She was asleep seconds after head hit the pillow.
