Rin nearly got us kicked out maybe I should do the talking from now on. I looked at the man, maybe he’s the commander.
“Excuse me, but do you know us.” Rin said groggily.
“Trying to play dumb huh, you did this to me.” he growled pointing to his left eye. Rin looked confused.
“Sorry, *yawn*, I never met you before.” He mumbled as he got out of his seat. He then walked closer to the man trying to examine him.
“I waited so long to settle the fight and you’re telling me you don’t remember.” Before the man got to complain some more, I got out of the cart and walked next to the two. Rin looked at me and told me to drive the cart. He then entered the back of the cart and fell asleep. The man looked dumb founded. “Can you believe this Keith, Rin’s pretending he doesn’t remember me.” The man grunted annoyed, I looked at him and gave a meek smile.
“Um I can’t remember you either.” I said scratching the back of my head.
“Whattttt, am I that forgettable that you two don’t remember the person Rin embarrassed eleven years ago.” I nodded. He went Tsk and motioned for us to follow him. I went on the cart and drove the cart inside the city. The inside of the city was huge. Water seemed to be the main source of energy. The city can only be described as a something that resembles the late 1800s the only difference is that everyone was wearing medieval clothes and Water was present everywhere you go. Maybe it was the fact that the Trees covered most of the sky, but the whole place was dark, the only source of light being the streetlights and the lights of stores. The man guided us through a street that was filled with blacksmiths and people striking metal by a furnace outside. This side of the city seems the most like a medieval setting compared to everything else.
Reaching a certain house that was bigger and grander than every other house I parked the car, I mean cart and helped Rin out. We than followed the man.
“You two were always traveling together, made people jealous. No other brothers had a bond as strong as you two.” he said as he was unlocking the door. He opened it to let us in and led us to a living room where I helped Rin sit on the couch. Then the old gears in my head that I barely used started to turn. I was processing what he just said. Then it clicked.
“Brothers?!?!!” I said disgusted that I might be related to this bastard in my past life. The man tilts his head to the side.
“Oh my, you two really forget. Your brothers, during the war of Lucymae you two never left each other sides.” he stroked his beard and gave a hearty chuckle.
“People in the knights brigade joked about you two being conjoined twins.” I looked at Rin then backed at him.
“We don’t even look alike.” He just shrugged and got up and went to the kitchen. He brought back what looks like a cup of alcohol.
“Truthfully, I thought you two were dead. After the temple of Lucy formed over princess Lucy’s resting place we couldn’t find you, what happened.”
“I honestly don’t know. I don’t remember anything about this wor- er place. And you guys keep telling me about a life I lived.” I scratched my head.
“Who even are you.” The man looked at me shocked and then looked like he remembered something.
“Oh yeah, you lost your memory, I’m Maxwell. I used to work with you when you were a mercenary, I supplied you with weapons.” He began to say as he handed me a cup of alcohol. He then took a glug of his own.
“When nothing beats Algalla’s beer.” he whipped his face and placed the cup on the table.
“When your brother wakes up, tell him prepare for his fight. With or without memories we shall duel. I’m sure his muscle memory would kick in and he would fight like he used to.”
I nodded, not really agreeing with the whole brother thing, but I would love to see Rin get beat up. I than remembered something.
“Simon told me to ask you anything. What is this orb.” I asked taking out the orb of Mae.
“T-the orb of Mae, I haven’t seen that in years. It disappeared the same time you two vanished. That orb was the cause of war, you can learn more about it if you go to the library or something.” I than put it away.
“Don’t ever show it to anyone, promise me that.” I nodded in agreement. I than pulled out the violet orb.
If you come across this story on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it.
“And this.”
“Nothing special, we found this at the sight where you two ‘died’, we gave it to Simon to keep as a momento, he is your father after all.” So that’s what he is to us. All this doesn’t feel real, and I don’t want to believe it is.
“Our father huh, it explains the sad feeling I felt.” Rin murmured.
“You’re awake.”
“Yes, I heard the whole conversation, my eyes are just closed. And I’ll fight you, maybe muscle memory will return some of my actual memory.” he explained. Maxwell grinned a big toothy grin at this, he than glanced at the clock.
“It’s getting late, there are guest bedrooms upstairs.” he said while yawning. He got up and lead us to the bedroom. He showed Rin his bedroom, and me mine. Mine wasn’t that big, but it surely was bigger than normal bedrooms. The king-size bed was in the middle of the room while a wardrobe can be seen on the left-hand side of the room. In the right there was a couch and a bookshelf, most of the books seem to be about blacksmithing. Maxwell said goodnight before leaving. I took off my shoes, afraid I would dirty the white fur carpet that laid under the couch and bookshelf. I then went to choose some books.
Knock, Knock.
“Come in.”
Rin entered my room and sat on my bed.
“Brothers huh, I doubt it’s true. I need more proof before I believe that.” Rin said as he laid flat in my bed.
“This might be one of the few times I agree with you. Wish we could of speak with Simon more, I actually trust him.” Rin nodded in agreement. The room was silent for a few moments. Now that the situation is calm the awkwardness of our situation is finally settling in. I’m having a conversation with my archnemeses, who spent his whole life trying to lock me up.
“Go steal something. I don’t know what to do with this free time.” Rin complained in a rather bored voice.
“Nothing caught my eyes. Why don’t you train or something for that fight coming up.”
“Nah, I had a dream about the event leading up to us coming here. We both shot each other. Guess I really was the first person to take down Keith Cunningham, the world’s most famous thief.” Rin huffed in exhaustion as he stretched out his arm life a presenter saying the name of a famous actor. I rolled my eyes at him.
“I don’t know what to do now. I’m in another world. I worked so hard to get the position that I had.”
“Why are you venting to me, I’m your enemy.”
“I don’t know.” Rin got up and left. I was now alone again in this big empty room. Me and Rin talked a few times when he was trying to arrest me, so I know a bit about him. But this time was different, there was no fighting. No trying to one up each other with witty dialogue as we fence on the Eifel tower. It was like a conversation any normal person would have. And honestly that was uncomfortable. I opened the window and leapt out; I landed on a roof nearby. Whenever I feel uncomfortable, I do one thing.
Steal.
To be honest I know I shouldn’t steal anything when I’m in a foreign world, but that’s what’s making me more excited to steal. All the treasure here must be beyond cool. Maybe there’s dragon scales, or maybe a position of flight whatever treasure I find I’m sure it would be amazing. I than ran on the rooftop jumping from rooftop to rooftop. This city was bigger than I imagine. I found a tavern a market outlet that looked like modern shops in a way, I even found a museum and next to the museum was an orphanage. I couldn’t see the word of the orphanage that well but that didn’t matter, the museum is what I’m after. I than jumped down from the rooftop and looked around, acting like a normal tourist. The security here wasn’t tight and there were some items that looked interesting.
“The orb of Mae huh.” I stared at a display case. I walk closer to get a better look.
“The orb of Mae, this is a replica. The orb of Mae was the cause of the war during the year 204. It is said that if blood is spilt on it, it would grant your wish.” A wish huh, if that’s the case what did I wish for that landed me here. Maybe I could try it out later. I then made my way to a grandee door.
“Statues to honor the departed heroes of war” the sign read. I was about to head to it but was stopped.
“Rin? How did you know I was here.”
“I was assigned to arrest you for three years of course I would know where you are. And I went to your room to ask you something. Saw you wasn’t there, then asked Maxwell if there was a museum." he boasted
“Wow creepy.”
“Shut up. Now hand me the money, I know you stole it.”
“It’s our money.”
“Exactly you didn’t need to steal it. Now hand it back it’s for supplies until we make our own money to live without depending on each other. Plus I don’t trust you making financial decisions.”
I reached to my pocket and handed him the money because he is right.
“Let’s go.” I sighed. The grandee door long gone from my mind.
That night I was twisting and turning. I had a dream that seemed important but forgot it the next day.
I walked down stair to Maxwell. Looks like he was taunting Rin who was silently eating cereal by the counter. Maxwell handed me a bowl of cereal. I look around the kitchen. It was huge. The stove was a big fancy gas stove and an island stood in the middle of the room. Everything was like a modern white color which contrasted the medieval look of the rest of the city. Seems like most places on the outside look old but is nicely designed on the inside.
“Hey Max, anyplace where I can go looking for a job.”
“Don’t call me that, and yeah there is. It’s called Quest or not. It’s got a tacky feel to it but they give good jobs, and you kind of get use to the feel.” he then went back to taunting an unbothered Rin.
While Rin was being taunted, he thought about how much this feels like his days at work. He felt relaxed. And happily, ate his cereal.
