Clara, the vampire, stood at the edge of the graveyard, her phone buzzing non-stop in her pocket. She pulled it out and groaned at the screen. The texts from her latest date's family were coming in fast.

“Why won’t you answer us?!” “Where is he?!” “He never came home from work!”

With a roll of her eyes, Clara typed a quick response: "Chill! You'll see him again soon. We just need to have his funeral first." She added a winky face emoji for good measure and hit send. Then she let out a sigh and checked the time. Not long now.

The sun had just set when the small funeral began, the paid mourners gathered in black, their sobs echoing off the headstones. Clara watched from the shadows, counting down the seconds.

As the last words of the eulogy were spoken and the actors threw dirt on the closed casket, a loud thump came from the grave. The crowd gasped, and the thumping grew more insistent. The ground trembled slightly, and suddenly, the coffin lid burst open. Clara’s date—now freshly undead—clawed his way out, looking dazed and very much alive… in a vampiric sort of way.

Clara smirked, sauntering up to him with her phone ready, hitting FaceTime to his family.

"See? I told you you’d see him again," she called out to the horrified family. "Though I’m not sure he’s the same guy you remember." She winked at her new protégé, tilting the camera towards his direction.

The young vampire blinked at Clara, then at his stunned family, and back at Clara. "Am I... dead?" he asked, fangs poking out as he tried to speak.

"Technically, yes," Clara said, throwing an arm around his shoulders. "But think of it as an upgrade. Immortal, undead, the whole package. Now, smile for the camera!"

She held her phone up and snapped a selfie of them together, his pale, shocked face framed by her delighted grin. The caption read: "Welcome to the family!" with a vampire emoji and a heart.

Clara sent the photo to the still-screaming family. Then she patted her new vampire on the back. "Come on, rookie. We’ve got a lot to cover—like how to use fangs without biting your own tongue. And how to ghost people properly. Literally."

As the two vampires walked off into the night. Clara’s phone buzzed again, and she smirked at the message.

“WHAT DID YOU DO TO HIM?!”

She tapped out a quick reply: "I fixed him. You're welcome!"
