Chapter 12: One Final Journal Entry

Ruby could barely contain herself as she hustled up the stairs to Juan Doe's room. Was it really true? Had her good friend actually become…a prosecutor?

Sure enough, inside a hotel room with a single bed, was her dearest friend in her fancy pink petticoat.

Juan Doe's had supposedly swept his room clean as he prepared to depart Holy Toledo for good. All that remained was just a bed, and a desk for writing…and a little black book that Priscilla was clutching.

"Fancy meeting you here, Rubes," Priscilla said, in her haughty voice. "Not that this inn is very fancy."

Ruby barely moved her mouth to form words. She knew Priscilla's father was a prosecutor, but little did she know Priscilla aspired to be one too. She barely managed to choke out the question she hoped Priscilla would pop.

"Prissy, yuh-yuh-you…are a…p…?"

Priscilla put her hands on her hips. "A prosecutor? Bloody well right I am! Trained by the finest."

"That's great!" Ruby said, finally able to annunciate. "Who?"

Her snooty smile changed to a regretful frown as she looked away. "My daddy…"

"Oh my…" Ruby said softly, releasing the wound she had opened.

Prisclla's gloved hand balled in a fist as a tear flowed from her eye.

"I swear on my life…" Priscilla said, turning away. "That whoever hired that witch to kill my daddy…will be prosecuted in the full name of the law!"

Ruby immediately put her hand on Priscilla's shoulder, knowing the pain and loss she had just endured. Priscilla reached up and touched her lady friend's hand. There was a kind, not-so-haughty smile on her face between two tear stained eyes. "Thank you, Ruby."

"Not a problem," Ruby said, a sheepish grin on her face. "I fully support you being a prosecutor. I'm just surprised that the judge and especially that weirdo prosecutor do too."

Prissy merely chortled. "Money talks and imbeciles answer. That's what I learned long ago. Booty of the flesh variety too, but I am much too posh for that!"

The two of them shared a round of giggles (or 'oh ho ho's in Priscilla's case) until Ruby's eyes fixed on the book she was holding.

"Ooh! What is that, by the way? A potential clue mayhaps?"

Prissy cleverly held the small black book between her fingers. "By the time I got here, Mr. Doe had already packed his bags and left. But he had forgotten his diary in the drawer."

Ruby suddenly stifled a grab for the book. "Oh my lanta! Could I see?! I really hope there is some lead why he was leaving town all of a sudden!"

Suddenly, Priscilla's demeanor changed. She twirled her nose in the air and frowned. "Like I'd give my rival attorney a lead in a case I'm overseeing. Why I'd sooner see pigs fly?"

Ruby's shoulder's sank. Some friend Prissy was being until in another strange turn, Prissy gave her a goofy smile and a wink. "Get ready for levitating pork! I'm just kidding. You're not just the defense attorney, you're my best mate. Of course I'd let you see it!"

Priscilla presented Ruby the prize.

She thanked Prissy. She even called her friend the greatest to which the prosecutor responded with a scoff. "That goes without saying."

Ruby paged quickly through the diary, hoping Priscilla wouldn't suddenly change her mind. All the entries seemed routine. They were about the sheer drudgery of working for a millionaire. There was much empathy to be had for his working man plight until she came to one on the penultimate page.

Her eyes widened as she read it aloud.

"June 19 1857. Today, I discovered the most shocking thing about my employer, Mr. Millions. Something that if it was known to the civilized world, he wouldn't be welcome in it…"

Ruby's voice trailed off. The following page was torn straight out of the book, leaving her and Priscilla to ponder what it was. But whatever it was, this revelation may have cost him his life.
