Chapter 11: Looks Like You Have A Job After All

Chapter 11: Looks Like You Have A Job After All

May was practically stunned into silence by Mr. Millions. Her face turned pale as she staggered backwards, nearly choking from her bonnet.

"Why?" Ruby asked, answering for her. "Don't you love her?"

Millions placed his hand over his supposed heart. "I do. With all the love that beats in my fabulous chest. But…I can't."

"Guh-guh…" May babbled. "W-w-why sweetlove?"

Mr. Millions frowned. "Because, my fabulous darling, I believe in due process. Something that is greatly undervalued in this town."

Ruby shook her head in disbelief. A millionaire believing in due process…in a corrupt western town? Now she had seen everything.

Maxie threw his opposite hand up in the air, and passionately exclaimed with a theatrical flair. "And…Juan was so important to me. He was like a son. A handsome, beautiful, fabulous son who cleaned my mansion!"

The foppish millionaire pointed a gloved finger at May. "And I'm sorry, darling. You may be my everything. But I cannot support the simply UN-fabulous thing you did to my servant."

May choked like she was swallowing a small rock. She dropped to her knees and cried, "But…but…I didn't do it!!!!"

Maxie Millions turned away from his love. He closed his eyes and clenched his fists. "Tell that to lady justice. Not me. Murder is the least fabulous thing in the history of fabulosity. Goodbye my darling."

Millions sashayed out of the prison, leaving May sobbing and crying at his feet.

Nate and Ruby looked at each other. Nate shrugged his shoulders and said, "I'm not gonna say anything snarky, other than, Hawkeye, my dear, you might have a job after all."

Ruby didn't celebrate this. There was someone crying in the depths of her misery behind bars. Instead, she moved slowly to the cell, crouched on her knees and reached a hand out to May Gossamer. "So uh…May uh…"

May sobbed loudly. "I'm much too ugly for prison! Nobody's gonna love me in there."

Ruby wrinkled her nose. That wasn't the kind of image she wanted in her head. "Umm…" she said at last. "You're much too ugly for prison. But not outside!"

"Whuh…" May blubbered, her eyes teary behind her circular glasses. "What's that mean…?"

Ruby gave her a sheepish grin. "I'm gonna take your case, Miss Gossamer, so you'll be free to read all the romance books and be Holy Toledo's most eligible bachelorette!"

May blew her nose into her pigtails like a hanky. She dabbed at her eyes. They were red and teary but there was a round smile on the gentle girl's face. "But what about Maxie…"

"Umm…" Ruby said looking at Nate. "We'll prove it to him too. Even if he seems a little adamant about putting you away."

May balled up her doughy fists and shook them. "Promise me you'll prove to my Maxie I am innocent. I only have eyes for him!"

Ruby managed a weak grin and a nod. This girl was very hoe-down bad for Max Millions.

But May was a fellow romanticist and Ruby believed if there was a chance for her, there would be for May too.

She placed a consoling hand through the bars. "I'll try my best!"

Ruby stood up and approached Star. "Sheriff, which hotel was Juan Doe staying at?"

Sheriff Star chuckled. "The only one in town, cutie. The Olde Towne Hotel."

Ruby spun on her heels to Nate. "That's where we're going next. I feel that the only way we're gonna find out anything about the murder victim is by seeing where he lived."

***

The Olde Towne Hotel stood at the far south end of town. And contrary to its name, it was brand new and painted a fresh white with red verandas giving a beautiful view of the town. Even the sign looked like it had been painted a week ago rather than truly in the 'olde tymes.'

They passed through a golden door into a fancy two story lobby where the hotel rooms overlooked the front desk.

The concierge at the desk was an old man with a white twirly mustache and squinty eyes. "Welcome to the Olde Towne Hotel!" he exclaimed with a bow.

Ruby raised an eyebrow skeptically. "Olde Towne? This place looks brand spanking new!"

"Of course," the man answered. "Much like the so-called Old West, we hope in 200 years we'll live up to our name."

Ruby wrinkled her button nose. "And we'll die up to our name."

Suddenly, her eyes sparkled and she rested her blushing face in her hands. "But ah well…I hope that that beautiful ranger and I will have great great grandkids and they'll be able to visit!"

Nate snapped his fingers in the desperate girl's face. "Earth to Ruby! We're here for a murder case!"

"The Juan Doe murder case?!" the old man said, nearly clutching at his chest like he was having an episode. "You're not the only one who's here for that!"

"My lanta!" Ruby said with her hands to her cheeks. "Who else is here?"

The old man chuckled. "The new prosecutor. She's more prickly than a prickly pear!"

Nate and Ruby exchanged looks. Ruby turned to face the man. "Who is this woman?"

The concierge thought for a second. "I didn't get her name, but she had these really twirly curly pigtails!"

Ruby's jaw nearly dropped. "Priscilla!!!"
