The cold-cadaver-hard facts were presented by Sheriff Star.
The murdered man's name was Juan Doe. He had worked for Max Millions, a famed tycoon who resided in a mansion just west of Holy Toledo. Ruby was familiar with Mr. Millions, but she knew virtually nothing of his practices. Prior to his demise, Mr. Doe had just left his employer and resided at the Olde Tyme Hotel.
His supposed murderer?
Ruby was just about to meet her, and when she did, she was greatly surprised.
The jail cells held a few ruffians. One of the many town drunks, and a couple of small-time bandits, all filthy and smelling of cheap whiskey.
But in the center was a clean young woman with round spectacles, a purple gown and a soft, doughy face. She looked more likely to oversee overdue library books than to shoot someone through the head.
She sat cross legged on the floor, but Sheriff Star's snappy voice jolted her from her meditation. "Hey, May Gossamer. I have two attorneys here ready to take this case off my hands. They'd like to speak to you."
May Gossamer, as the young lady was called, looked up.
She threw her pudgy hand forward and spoke in an unusually deep voice. "Tell them, they're not needed. My Maxie will bail me out!"
Star shrugged her shoulders and looked at Ruby and Nate. "You heard the lady! I guess your service is not needed."
But Ruby, never the one to ignore the call to justice, rushed to May. "Your Maxie? Do you mean Mr. Millions!"
"Guh huh!" May said, nodding with half lidded eyes. "I've always had a thing for older men and rich men, and he's both of my turn-ons rolled into one delectable manwich!"
Ruby's eyes widened. "My lanta. You actually know this manwich?"
"Do I?" May Gossamer boomed with glee. "He offered for us to run away together. Into the night and away from this dirty old town! And of course, I said, yes. It's just like in my favorite romance series, Romeo of the Rodeo!"

Suddenly, Ruby's cheeks turned bright red and she squealed with joy. "Wowie zowie! That's my favorite romance too!"
Ruby started to drool with a lovelorn expression on her face. "And a millionaire offering to run away with a general store girl? Eek, that's so impossibly romantic. Big emphasis on impossibly!"
May's eyes went downcast. It seemed impossible when that heinous assassin showed up in his place. Perhaps this Juan Doe guy was jealous of my steamy relationship with his employer."
Ruby snapped out of her romance novel induced fantasizing for a second to look at Nate. "Mr. Doe… was jealous of May? Do you really think…?"
Nate chuckled. "Methinks the young girl is a little bit deluded in some area. But that's just my own take."
May immediately stood up and grasped the bars. She shook them angrily and spat at Nate. "Deluded?! I'm Maxie's future wife and future mommy of his five children!"
Nate screwed up his eyes and twirled a finger around his ear while looking at Ruby. "Say protege, you don't happen to know when the crazy train is pulling into town? It might just depart with one more passenger…"
Ruby put her hands on her hips and glared at him.
To her, there was nothing wrong with dreaming big…especially when it came to a passionate, sensuous romantic connection with a debonair western man.
It was something she had yearned for since her days in New York and especially when she caught wind of that handsome Ranger Mask.
But her sighs and fantasies were interrupted by a foppish voice from behind them. It was somehow deeper, but even campier than Nate's voice.
"Darling…" the voice said. "Is my darling here?"
Ruby, her teacher and the sheriff turned around. A tall man leaned on a jeweled scepter cane with several diamond rings fixed on his fingers.
He was middle aged, but he had a full head of luxurious flowing hair with a pinstripe of greys and blacks running through it. His long face was smooth except for a long curling black goatee.
It was clear this was none other than the illustrious Max Millions.
As soon as May saw her, she screamed like a tortoise in heat. The other prisoners started angrily at her, but she merely chuckled.
"Sorry boys," she said, reclaiming her wits. "But I'm already taken."
A smirk spread on Millions' face and he strolled with his cane over to meet his woman. "Maylene. I came as soon as I heard the news from a second hand source. It is absolutely UN-fabulous that they did this to you!"
Ruby was a bit taken aback by the flamboyance of this southern gentleman. He was posh and pristine like Ranger Mask, but there was something a little…odd about him. And untrustworthy.
"Luckily…" May said, clasping her hands together. "The nightmare is over because my dreamboat has arrived! Please, Maxie. Get me out of here and into your arms!"
A look of momentary thought formed on Millions' brow, and he answered with a frown. "About that, darling…It's not very fabulous of me, but no can do…"
